Published by Benjamin Pritchard (A0.1109715). This arrangement is in memory of Eric Doney (piano) and Rick Chamberlain (trombone) who passed away with months of one another from cancers. The arrangement, therefore, features piano and trombone throughout. It begins with a potion of Eric Doney's songs called “A Winter’s Tale.†It should be played freely. The pianist should feel free to ad lib, add his/her own style, and expand from the basic lead sheet given. This introduction leads into Chopin’s Nocturne Opus 9 No. 2 featuring lead trombone with rhythm section. Rick CHamberlain was a great ballad player and had terrific range. This arrangement pays respect to Rick’s range and goes up to a high D! At measure 49 the band takes over, particularly the lead trumpet. The sax section takes over at measure 65 with an up tempo sax soli, which can be joined by lead trombone. That is followed by a rubato piano in Eric’s style feature, and then up tempo solo sections for both trombone and piano. The ballad feel come back at measure 131 until the end. The ending is an Eric Doney ending. He often used this ending in his version of “Amazing Grace.â€.

Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece. Written by George Gershwin in 1924, right from it’s opening notes it conjures up The Jazz Age, The American Scene, New York City, and as Gershwin himself described, national pep. Return Of The Blues is known as the ritornello (Italian: return) theme as it appears seven times during RIB. It is one of the more famous themes from RIB, being heard right after the clarinet glissando in the beginning of the piece. Here, it is presented as a stand-alone tune. It is written with a trumpet solo, but the solo can be played by any member of the band. Difficulty level is intermediate and certainly playable by most high school jazz ensembles. Lead Tpt Ab5.

FIX IT AGAIN TONY! is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2002 Australian Academy Festival of Music B Grade Jazz Ensemble division. It is a blues in F with a grooving shuffle feel. In the opening choruses, the big band is divided into three smaller combos playing the head, backing riffs and rhythmic stabs. Be sure to have the players listen carefully to each other and to be aware of which combo they belong to. Solo space is provided for the 2nd Trumpet and 1st Trombone players, although this could be opened up to feature other band members. The solo section is followed by a Sax section soli before the head returns to take the chart out. The inspiration for this title came from my first car - a 1970 FIAT 124 - which provided me with many years of enjoyable motoring. Tannenbaum, Replanted is a complete reworking of the very popular Weihnachtslied O Tannenbaum, which will even be familiar to many people from non-German-speaking countries. However, this is not an arrangement for purists, as the well-known melody in 3/4 time is presented here in a reharmonized up-tempo 4/4 time. The piece starts with a gently driving Latin-style groove and transforms to a Swing middle section, returning to the Latin groove at the end. I’ve not used a standard Latin beat here, instead a groove based loosely on the bossa nova. All the accompanying motifs in the saxes, trumpets, and trombones are drawn from the original melody.The Outro requires your lead alto and tenor saxophone players to improvise, alternating every two measures. I’ve left it up to the players to decide who starts first. Likewise, one or both players can improvise over the final chord.The flute part is optional, but does add a very distinctive sound over the top of the band, particularly in the quieter passages.

Written for the T-Town Jazz Band and named for a Tulsa landmark, this is a big band swing tune in F minor blues with solos and exposure aplenty most notably in the third trombone part. The piece follows a chap who is happily walking (or jaunting) down Cherry Street. Three other guys come in and pick up his melody as a unison trio. This moves into a quick verse in the ensemble before the four players each take a solo turn almost like a combo. The party then takes off with the full band before it moves back to the trio wandering off while crowd bids them farewell and the original soloist takes a final turn. The reason there is such a focus on the third trombone is because this piece is dedicated to Dale Turner who was the third trombone player in the T-Town Jazz Band and a founding member of the band. We tried to get him to improv a solo here and there, but he wouldn't do it. We figured if we wrote it into his part, he would play it, and so the next piece I was writing was Cherry Street Jaunt, so the 3rd trombone got a lot of love. Unfortunately, the band had to shut down for a time due to COVID-19, and during that time, Dale passed due to complications from it. As a result, he never saw the part I wrote to trick him into a solo. The MP3 is generated from the composition program, but the video link is a live performance.

(A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). As jazz history books like Gunther Schuller’s tell us, Benny Goodman’s rendition of Jelly Roll Morton’s ‘King Porter Stomp’ in the arrangement of Fletcher Henderson ‘ushered in the Swing Era’. That this tune already had a long and venerable career was obvious to every jazz lover: starting with Morton’s own recording from 1923, it was revived on a regular basis by Fletcher Henderson for his orchestras of the ‘twenties and ‘thirties. He then adapted the tune for the Benny Goodman Orchestra, which made it a hit in 1935. And from that moment on, the tune stayed popular: in 1975 it was recorded by the Gil Evans Orchestra for the album ‘There Comes A Time’. But during the ‘twenties, Henderson picked up more ‘jazz and stomp’-tunes (as opposed to the Tin Pan Alley/Broadway fare) and had them arranged for his orchestra. One such example is a tune credited to pianist/bandleader/businessman Clarence Williams (although other sources state that it was actually written by Joseph Joe Jordan, one of the early ragtime ‘professors’). That is the composition ‘Hop Off’, a very swinging, hard-driving multi-strain tune. Henderson recorded it in 1927. However, unlike ‘King Porter Stomp’, Henderson never chose to ‘adapt’ this tune for his ‘thirties swing-style orchestra, and so it never became a part of the Goodman Orchestra’s band book. What if Henderson had done so, and in 1935 had handed over the tune to Goodman as an addition for his ‘Let’s Dance’-library? ‘Hop Off’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. Based on the 1927 Henderson arrangement, it juxtaposes the two main strains of the original composition for maximum variety. Plenty of breaks, stoptime-sections and other ‘hot’ stuff. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Solo’s for clarinet, tenor sax 1, tpt 2, trb 1 and a brief four-bar spot for the drummer at the end. If your band is able to play ‘King Porter Stomp’, this tune should cause no problems. The only exception is the presence of a solo clt part. The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’: fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. Must be able to be heard over a shouting ensemble chorus. If your band has such a player: have fun!

After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers. Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. The audio sample plays the full score.This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet! With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style. With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement. This hard swinging, up tempo arrangement is written in the style of the Count Basie Orchestra.  It starts out small with a Piano solo and builds throughout with additional solos in the Trumpet, Tenor Sax, and Trombone.
