Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. Program this for a recital encore or Christmas pageant.  Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky is probably the most popular of the great composers in America. His music certainly appeals to musicians. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most noteworthy melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most noteworthy melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. The spear is said to have extraordinary powers. He who possesses it will rule the world and he who loses it thereafter will die an untimely death. The last person recorded to have had it was Adolf Hitler. This musical composition journeys through the time of Hitler and his obsession to obtain the spear, his atrocious acts during his tenure of the spear, and the loss of the spear. The spears main thematic motions are the glissandos in the violin that represent the spears anger and tortuous ways. I. Spear Found takes place during his times as an understudy of Dietrich Eckart, a dedicated satanist and figure in the Occult Thule Society and founding member of the Nazi party. Dietrich said: Follow Hitler! He will dance, but it is I who have called the tune! I have initiated him into the Secret Doctrine' opened his centres in vision and given him the means to communicate with the Powers. Do not morn for me; I shall have influenced history more than any other German. Hitler became enamored with the Spear of Destiny, which claimed it called to him. Spear Found, is Hitler's journey to capturing the spear to rule the world. II. Spear Possessed begins with no time meter or key signature. It is ad liberty of the performers and is a musical representation of the spears possessive powers towards evil. This movement takes place during the time of the Holocaust and the actions committed during Hitler's reign of world domination. The movement infers a jewish folk song titled, Dayeinu, a jewish Passover song meaning it would have been enough. This song is set in context of freedom. The movement goes through variations of Dayeinu and the spears version of a possessed Dayeinu. The violin has fast and rapid rhythms with small thematic material of the folk tune. At the end of the movement, the piano strikes the low end of the piano with a soft yarn mallet to symbolize the bombs dropping and the start of World War II. III. Spear Lost takes place during WWII and the Marines efforts to take down Hitler's reign. During the 3rd movement, the Marine Corps music comes to life as they take control of the spear and ultimately end the war. The Spear however, takes its last stand as the spears motif soars over the possessed marine tune. At the end of the movement, the spear is once again screeching as it survives and goes missing once again.

SummaryIt must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. These are eleven of the most well-known dances of the Renaissance set in five movements and selected from the famous collection entitled Terpsichore, published in 1612 by Michael Praetorius. They are sure to be a welcome addition to the elementary violin repertoire and most of them can be played in first position. By the time Michael Praetorius published his dance collection, he was one of the most famous musicians in Germany. The name is pronounced “terp-SI-cory” and rhymes with the word “hickory”. The original publication consisted of 312 dances in four, five and six parts. Although the dances were probably conceived for string ensemble, Praetorius was well aware that in practice they would be played by any instruments that happened to be available.These arrangements for violin and keyboard are based on the original 1612 publication. The music sounds more authentic using a harpsichord rather than a piano, or the harpsichord sound of a digital keyboard. The keyboard part may be interpreted quite freely with ornamentation added as appropriate. During the Renaissance, it was common practice to combine separate dances to create something of more substantial duration. A similar practice is used in these arrangements which are as follows: 1. Three Gavottes; 2. Two Ballets; 3. Two Bourées; 4. Two Courantes and 5. Two Voltas.
