Diego Marani #5983205. Published by Diego Marani (A0.528408). Chopin composed his best-known Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9, No. 2 when he was around twenty years old. This well-known nocturne is in rounded binary form (A, A, B, A, B, A) with coda, C. The A and B sections become increasingly ornamented with each recurrence. Nocturne in E-flat major opens with a legato melody, mostly played piano, containing graceful upward leaps which becomes increasingly wide as the line unfolds. This melody is heard again three times during the piece. With each repetition, it is varied by ever more elaborate decorative tones and trills.This arrangement for Bb Clarinet with Piano Accompaniment reflects faithfully the original.

This is the second of three movements (from Night Music: A Suite for Bb Clarinet and Piano), but can be played as a singular piece. This piece uses extended harmonies in the piano to ripple and eddy around the longer notes of the clarinet. A contrasting blues theme is followed by a return of the opening musical ideas. A detour through descending 7th chords meanders back to a quiet final return of the opening.

The American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell (1860–1908) is rather unknown around here, even though he had his artistic roots in here: For he was trained as a pianist in Paris, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, and Frankfurt. After his return to his home country, he worked as a teacher but was also director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for eight years. During that time (1896) he composed 'Woodland Sketches' Op. 51 which is among the best-known of his piano compositions, especially the opening piece of his musical landscape paintings: 'To a wild rose' which is a simple, yet harmonically spiced melody full of peace and ease, without any technical tricks.
