Published by David Rain, Choral Composer (A0.1101494). “Let’s sing, it’s Spring!†is dedicated to my dear uncle and aunt, James and Daphne Shaw, and their amazing clan, the “Bowen Island Shaws.†I have given this song the sub-title: “A Crazy Choral Etude for Rolled Rs and Perfect 5ths.†It is meant, no pun intended, to be a musical lark, great fun for a choir to sing, rolling Rs like crazy, with no holding back. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a choral suite that I have called The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite. “Let’s sing, it’s Spring!â€, with its rousing coda, works perfectly as the closing number of this suite.

Hear My Cry is a very personal prayer from the 61st Psalm written by David. It seems that words were not enough to express his inner turmoil so he needed to cry out to his Creator. While writing this piece I envisioned David falling at the feet of God, then compassionately being picked up and embraced. God, seeing David’s humility and faith, hears and answers his prayer. This contemporary choral setting uses cluster voicings and influences from jazz harmony to exploit the emotional intensity of the text.

Published by David Rain, Choral Composer (A0.1091873). Erik Satie's Sarabande No. 1 is one of my favourite piano pieces. For a long time, I felt there was an a cappella choral piece hiding within it, in plain sight. One day I got inspired and gave it a try. Creating a choral adaptation of a piano piece has its challenges. I tried to keep faithful to Satie's original musical inspiration and created lyrics to go with my arrangement that evoke an early summer morning, one of my favourite times of the year. Several months later, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I was accepted. As dawn breaks was one of the pieces that this amazing choir sight read for me on the spot. VCC director Jon Washburn and choir members then provided me with valuable feedback, for which I am very grateful. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a choral suite that I have called The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite. As dawn breaks works perfectly as the opening number of this suite. Finally, my instruction to choirs is to sing as if in a painting, and indeed I invite any artists who might draw inspiration from this piece to consider creating a companion work of art to accompany it.

Written as he lay dying of tuberculosis, Henry Francis Lyte's poem of courage and hope in times of great suffering and sorrow remain timely and appropriate for many occasions. This arrangement selects four of the verses of Lyte's poem, and offers a fresh harmonization of William Monk's Eventide for each verse, drawing attention through harmonic and melodic elements to key words in the text. The harmonic texture thickens significantly in the final verse, splitting the choir into 5 parts, before resolving with the text I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

A lively setting for choir and piano of three of the most popular tales from the first volume of poems written and published by Hilaire Belloc in 1907: 1. Rebecca (who slammed doors for fun and perished miserably); 2. Henry King (who chewed bits of string and was early cut off in dreadful agonies); 3. Jim (who ran away from Nurse and was eaten by a lion); The text is rich with humorous twists and turns, moments of melodrama, pathos and comic asides. With the help of a colourful piano accompaniment, these musical settings breathe new life into the classic poems with a direct storytelling style and plenty of humour. Three Cautionary Tales for Choirs can be performed as a whole or as separate songs, with a total running time of about 8:30.

A vivid and at times raucous celebration of Saturnalia, in Latin, for an ensemble of voices and instruments (including various percussion, woodwind and brass instruments). The sound sample is a sung performance by the composer with an electronic preview of the instruments. Further explanations: Song for Saturnalia - a raucous and fun romp - in whole tones (since there is scant evidence of the types of scales used in those days - whole tones just seem to work in this context). The Latin words make references to relatively modern times but the spirit of Saturnalia is timeless, after all. The pileum (also written pilleum) is the little cap that slave wore during Saturnalia to show they were free men and women on that day - they would point to their cap and say libertus sum (I am a free person) and omnes aequales sumus (we are all equal). The words (and translation - both by me) are as follows: Saturnalia Song Io Saturnalia! Hodie igitur dominus noster non es. [Hooray, it’s Saturnalia, so today you’re not our boss] Hodie omnes aequales sumus. Io! [Hooray, it’s Saturnalia, hooray!] [Note on the invented names (used in the vocative in the song of course): Fruticius is based on the word frutex a bush - it’s also used to mean blockhead in Roman comedies, but I can’t help that!. Campestrius is based on campester - a plain or place of clear ground (Blair is the Celtic equivalent word - a forest clearing!) Candelarius is based on candela - a taper or candle - ie something burning hence Brandt (yes, I know he’s earlier than the other two politicians, but, hey, it’s all a bit of anachronistic fun!)].

I composed this at the Sarteano Choral Workshop in Italy, where it was such a hit that participants were greeting each other with it on the streets of Rome after the workshop. It is 2 1/2 minutes long, a capella, SATB (little divisi), and has a 6-measure melismatic soprano solo with range treble A to high B. It is light and fun, written in Italian, and follows a white cat (Bianchino) with different-colored eyes and an ENORMOUS yawn. It would be a great choice for an encore, or in a set of short, light pieces.
