He starts depicting the mystery of God in dayaw ken lawag kawesmo (you are clothed in honor and light) juxtaposed with God’s vast greatness in naindaklan ka unay (you are great) and God’s authority in pannakabalin mot’ agturay (you power rules). With strokes of faith he paints toy kararwak agdaydayaw kenka (my soul worships you). Then he begins to unravel God’s majesty in pagluganam dagiti ulep, pagsakayam ti payak ti angin (you ride on clouds and soar through the wings of the air) before portraying God’s influence over creation in langit ken daga napnuan iti gloriam (heaven and earth are full of your glory). He then struggles to create the best sound describing God by blending all these elements. Finally, he comes to the realization that God is INDESCRIBABLE and just exclaims what he has been saying all along, Annian a kinatan-okmo! (How precious You are!).

Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1487909). Composer’s Notes Anim Zemiros was composed in 1985 while I was a doctoral student of Martin Boykan at Brandeis University. The initial fugal theme was inspired by the melody from the third movement of Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, also known as Heiliger Dankgesang. My theme resembles Beethoven's melody in two ways: it aurally approximates the rhythms of his theme and it also takes the contour of Beethoven's melody and inverts it, also in an approximated way. This is where the similarities to Beethoven's theme end, forAnim Zemiros is most certainly not composed in the Lydian mode! Rather, it is composed in a chromatically saturated musical language. Although Anim Zemiros may be used for the Jewish Musaf Sabbath Service, it was conceived as a concert piece. In the synagogue, this hymn is sung responsively by the cantor and congregation. The responsive nature of this hymn is what inspired the use of contrapuntal passages alternating with homophonic ones. Anim Zemiros begins with a statement of the initial fugal theme in the basses followed by a response at the interval of a fifth in the altos during which the basses present the counter theme. After a brief episode, the same thing happens in the tenor and soprano voices while the basses and altos present new contrapuntal melodies. A brief, contrasting, calm homophonic chorale passage ensues (a textural foreshadowing of both the loud climax and the hushed closing of the piece). This is followed by an extended development section (like ones from sonata-allegro movements) in which ideas from both the contrapuntal and homophonic sections are fragmented and stratified. Shifting time signatures provide added momentum to this music that leads to the homophonic climax that follows. Next comes an “anti-fugue” in which the initial fugal theme is presented backwards, as is the fugal form itself, moving from four voices, to three and finally to two. However, rather than moving to one voice as at the opening of the piece (which would have been a very predictable thing to do), the piece ends with a reminiscence of the calm homophonic chorale. Ashkenazic pronunciation was chosen over Sephardic for two reasons. I wished to have the s sound on the Hebrew letter sov rather than the t sound. In addition, Ashkenazic pronunciation is considered to be somewhat archaic since Sephardic is used in modern Hebrew. I felt this gave me artistic license to compose vocal lines containing correct or incorrect syllabic stress for purely musical effect. The InspirationIn 2023 I decided to review a piece I had composed in 1990 to honor a friend I was singing with in a choral group at that time; Charles Munion. He never heard the piece as I felt the classical contemporary style would be a bit much for his ears! Beyond that I don't have allot of recollection as to the inspiration or what my thoughts were at the time of the composition. In regards to the revision, I added additional music to the third movement in order to balance out the movements and reworked some of the choral voicing.The MusicWritten in a contemporary classical style it follows the classic structure of 3 movements: First movement – brisk, loud forceful in nature Second movement – slow and lyrical Third movement – light and quick but with a forceful ending While in a contemporary style, at heart it maintains tonal centers throughout. While there is a few brief moments where I can here a little Bartok, as a whole I would say this piece is unique in regards to its style.

Amen. - St. Francis of Assisi's Prayer before the Crucifix NOTES from the composer: One year ago, I had the privilege of participating in the Leadership Pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome (2011) sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Franciscan Healthcare, and Viterbo University. I carried with me, not only the responsibility of bringing back a hint of Francis’ lived experience to my students, but the desire to compose something wholly Franciscan. The San Damiano Cross is one of the most distinctive Franciscan images we have on campus. The gentle Jesus that hangs on this 12th-century icon will forever be linked to Francis’ dramatic step from citizen to sainthood-welcoming his earnest prayer to enlighten the darkness of his heart. The Basilica of Santa Chiara in Assisi holds both the San Damiano Cross and the remains of his confidante, St. Clare. It seemed a good place to start getting serious. Copying the prayer in at least six different languages, I tucked it away in my travel books, not digging it out again until the following summer (2012). The opening phrases in the piece came easily enough (Altissimo, glorioso Dio), but I stumbled through a handful of ideas before coming up with the mantra (illumine le tenebre…). It made sense that Francis would joyfully address God singing forte (Altissimo and Signore), while quietly chanting his humble prayers for faith, hope, charity, and knowledge. The friendship between Francis and Clare can’t be missed, not only in the intermingling of SATB voices, but in the setting of che faccia lo tuo santo e verace comadamento (that I may carry out your holy and true command). The phrase is sung only once by the women before the final return of the illumine chant (which is repeated throughout by the men). Maybe I chanced on weaving some of Clare’s courage with Francis’ persistence into Illumina le tenebre, all while trying to compose something wholly Franciscan?  ---Mary Ellen Haupert, October 2012. Incorporating thematic snippits from another memorable tune by alice deejay (Better Off Alone), this piece is sure to get any large mixed group dancing and grooving. While vocal percussion adds a lot to this particular arrangementy, it isn't necessary due to the driving patternic nature of the supporting voice parts... This is not an easy piece... But nailing the rhythm changes and emmersing yourself in the vibe of this piece will reward you with a showstopper sure to make a splash at any concert or competition. Challenging to learn, but EPIC once you get it. A great number to throw at any advanced acappella group looking for their next big thing!
