UPC: 000308037371.The part song, written for mixed choruses or equal-voiced ensembles, was a form actively cultivated by nineteenth-century German composers, Schubert, Schumann, Weber, Brahms -- and in this case, Mendelssohn. In fact, Mendelssohn wrote more than 25 of these very attractive pieces. The songs were intended for amateur or semi-professional groups. Their texture is for the most part homophonic, and they were to be sung without accompaniment. The lyrics of some of the finest German poets were often chosen for the texts and Mendelssohn has used texts by Uhland for both of these settings.

This is a setting of one of the earliest known Christmas Carol texts in the English language - I Syng of a Mayden - believed to be sung to music around the 15th century. It is scored for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass choir with church organ and is written for semi-professional choirs. The opening plainsong and modal harmony set a medieval and reverential tone for the piece. This develops into an outpouring a joy and praise for the Virgin Mary and her child represented by full choral harmony with organ pedals.

The Old Palmer Song is a favourite Australian folk song that is meant to be sung in a rollicking style that reflects the excitement and anticipation of hardy Australian colonials setting out in search of gold. Following hard on the heels of the great California gold rushes (1848 – 1855) came the discovery of payable quantities of gold in Australia. The first gold rush in Australia began in New South Wales in May 1851 after prospector Edward Hargraves discovered gold near Orange, at a site he called Ophir. Other discoveries quickly followed, including those at Ballarat and Bendigo in the colony of Victoria. Then came Rosewood and Gympie (1867) in Queensland; the Gawler region in South Australia in 1868; and Halls Creek (1885), Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie (1893) in Western Australia. One of Australia’s richest alluvial goldfields was that of the Palmer River in far north Queensland. The rush to the Palmer began in 1873 and lasted for about three years. The goldfields were nearly 100 miles inland from the small coastal settlement of Cooktown and the early prospectors had a hard time of it just getting to the field. Leaving Cooktown they crossed the coastal mangroves, then on through dense tropical rainforest, into the more open eucalypt forest beyond and then across the dry, inhospitable and rugged country of the hinterland dissected by wide and deep rivers. And always there was the risk of meeting with fierce resistance from the Aborigines whose tribal land they were travelling through. At the height of the rush there were around 35,000 prospectors on the Palmer (including a great many Chinese). By the time the rush was over, the Palmer had yielded over 100 tons of gold! The Old Palmer Song is set to the tune of Ten Thousand Miles Away, a shore ballad/sea shanty that probably originated in Ireland in the early 19th Century.

I was tasked to think about what songs my grandparents sang to me. Que Sera, Sera, although not a folksong, was the first that came to mind. My maternal grandmother had sung this to me in my younger days. Not long after, my grandmother announced that she intended to sell her house - the very house that I spent most of my growing-up years in. This was followed by many weeks of packing her belongings, uncovering forgotten treasures, and recalling the days of my childhood. Quite aptly, arranging this piece gave me an avenue to express my sentimental thoughts, and say goodbye to an old house filled with so many memories. I hope that both the performer and the listener can be transported back in time, even if just for a few minutes, to reminisce the happier and more carefree days of our lives. Furthermore, let us count our blessings in the present, as the future’s not ours to see. Que Sera, Sera. Songs from the Book Of Revelation is a powerful new cantata (SATB) and piano accompaniment consisting of 14 original songs from the book of Revelation that may be performed on any occasion throughout the year. I wrote this work during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. I was inspired to praise God and compose new music using text from the book of Revelation. Next to each song title, I have provided the bible verses for easy access. I arranged the songs in chronological order, but may be sung in any order. Most of the songs are easy to medium in difficulty level, including the piano accompaniment. One of the songs titled Amen! Amen! (Revelation 7:12) is sung and played in whole tone scale and is challenging to perform. There is a couple of short solos, and acapella sections throughout the cantata. Check out the MIDI sample and video of this entire cantata in my YouTube channel with the link provided. All lyrics are shown on the screen as the music is playing. The men sing the melody in unison on one verse. There is a contrasting minor section sung by the full choir in the middle, then a return to the opening melody sung by the soloist.
