A song of struggle between faith and fear as a storm threatens to engulf all in its path. Verses of storm are interspersed with verses of calm, as the loving heart struggles to ease the desperate mind with the notion of there being no reason to fear, reinforcing the faith that ‘love will hold through blood and tears’. The music and text express this idea with an almost surreal detachment of the peaceful heart from the surrounding storm during each return of the verse of calm, amidst the increasing tension in the verses of storm, as if in temporary respite within the eye of the storm. In such a meditative state, one can even begin to admire the storm in awe of the beauty of the sheer force of nature. It culminates with the eventual defeat of the loving heart and a resignation to the likely fate to be met by the end of the storm. Yet, the end is not met with the fear that had threatened to engulf the desperate minds, but with the final, strongest, statement in faith that ‘love goes on past life on earth’.Duration: Approx. 4:30minLanguage: English2017 Choral Contest Entry

The text of Breathe Low is a meditation for those who are in tough times. The original text speaks peace and restoration. Breathe Low and Speak soft refer to a calming effect that will sooth audiences. There is also what I call the Football Section where a fugue like subject, Let us find peace, tosses itself between all voices starting in the bass section, moving to tenor, alto and soprano. Sometimes this section shares harmony (SA and TB together). It does have multiple meters from 4/4 to 2/4 time and back again. This peace encompasses a wide use of dynamics from piano to double forte. The Apostle John’s visions in Revelation are nothing less than astounding to all readers. However, little is it known that another Hymn to Christ is neatly tucked into the very first seven verses of this last book of the Bible. John begins his Revelation (verses 1-3) with a prelude, introducing Jesus Christ and the apocalypse (revelation) that was made to him via the angel sent to describe all the things about which he was to write. He says, Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and keep what is written in it, for the time is near. After this short prelude, John delivers an epistolary opening (a greeting identifying the author and recipients), then pronounces a blessing upon the recipients-verses 4-6. After both the prelude and the opening, John immediately proceeds to another known Hymn to Christ, in verse 7, which I have called, Behold He Is Coming. When presented with the text in Revelation 1:7, I immediately thought, Where is the Gospel, the good news, in this piece? After several minutes of meditating on the text, I realized the Gospel message was right there in front of me-in the very last line: Yes, so be it [Lord], so be it, [Amen!] There will be peace! All will be known. Every single person will understand, at that point. The end, is the ushering in of a new beginning. The piece is scored in G minor for SATB with flute and Bâ™ clarinet accompaniment. In the opening phrase, we hear the clarinet on a sustained high (concert) G, which crescendos into a quick, descending sixteenth note pattern. There is urgency! The flute joins the clarinet in a duet to complete the introduction to the anthem. Then, the choir begins their haunting chant, Behold, He is coming with the clouds. Every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him. Every eye will see Him and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him . Alas, there is peace! The two instruments dissolve into an a cappella four-part chorale where the choir creates the agreement between the text and the music, modulating to the relative major (Bâ™)-all is reconciled in a final Amen!

The text is from a poem written by our older son, Matthew. He has a gift to express ideas and emotions in words that I do not, and I was very pleased and excited when he gave me permission to set his poem to music. The music is in an overall ternary form, with the fiery outer sections tempered with a more spiritual middle segment. The piano plays an important but supporting accompanying role. The music is somewhat tonally oriented, with an E minor basis for the more passionate outer sections. These sections also require the choir to sing some chromatic melodic and harmonic lines and constructions. The rhythm also varies somewhat, asking the chorus to express these emotional portions of the piece. The flowing middle section has a more consistent tempo and is centered in C major. This key seems to have the qualities of innocence and peace, which offsets the more restless and fiery E minor of the rest of this work. This more meditative center section also has a more triadic basis than the somewhat contrapuntal textures surrounding it. It invites the music performers and listeners to experience the joy of Music and Art, while the closing music and text sing of the passion and energy of the artistic experience.
