This piece is an exact mirror of Chopin's 'Minute' Waltz. The left hand now plays what the right hand originally had, and vice versa. It's not simply an inversion but the same relationship of black and white keys so that the 'feel' of the left hand duplicates the right hand original. One may inspect Vincent Persichetti's 'Seven Mirror Etudes' to see how this works; in his pieces the LH is a mirror of the RH. But in mine there are two mirrors, so to speak: each hand is a mirror of what the opposite hand has in the Chopin original. The result is somewhat odd, since major triads become minor and tonal relationships are altered.

The combination of a 4th and a wholestep makes a structure known as the tritonic scale. Simply a three-tone scale, nothing more to it than that! highly pianistic, very mirror-able, and able to display sudden and dramatic shifts in harmonic colors while keeping a steady cascade of notes in motion. Octaves in the left hand make both a bassline and a melody underneath these arpeggiated scalar figures. The piece is in 12/8 time, as is often used for these three-notes up-three notes down, and back again kind of elements. The mirroring here is less topographical than the other pieces, but the contrary motion and mirrored fingerings persist, as does the strict use of the intervals at hand. Approx running time is 3 mins 15 secs. A Fun piece for the display of the sound of the piano, and the display of the ability of the player to maintain a flowing 1/8-note triplet motion through many different shades of major and minor, lydian and phrygian . Etude 3.0, the last of the single-interval material. tritones are rather easier to mirror, and otherwise make symmetrical than other intervals. Thus this piece is 100% mirrored, symmetrical, and topographically identical hand-to-hand. There are many structures which are also inversions, played simultaneously. Diminished 7ths, Dom7 b5 chords, even fifths with the tritone sandwiched in between the two halves of the fifths, are in evidence here. There are rhythmic syncopations and shifting accents. All in all a real showpiece of perpetuum mobile dissonance which makes sense even to the listener or player accustomed to Romantic literature. It's a gallop! Approx running time is 4 mins 20 secs. Two-interval pieces are next in line. MBB.

An arrangement of a concert piece by Calixa Lavallee, the French Canadian who also wrote Canada's national anthem, O Canada. You may be familiar with mirror writing for the piano (see Vincent Persichetti's Mirror Etudes). So I took the busy right hand part of Calixa's piece and made a mirror for the left hand; original left hand figures went to the right. However, the accompaniment figures are not mirrored, but newly composed (the exact mirror was too dull). A kind of atonality is the delightful result.

The whole step and the major third are quite euphonious, and even fit into some keys where their usage in a tonal setting facilitates mirror fingerings and symmetry. E major, having four sharps, is just such a key. The scalar passages are strictly mirror-fingered. The octave displacement of the note in between the root and 3rd of the scale is also used throughout, in either hand. Tempo here is only a suggestion, as it may be a bit quick, the 9ths that change direction throughout being the chief technical challenge. The melody is, by default, the top notes of these octave-displaced figures. There are also thirds with broken octaves for accompaniment as well. Running time is approx.3 mins, 30 secs.,longer at a slightly slower pace. Pedaling is not specifically marked, but is given with general instructions rather than with traditional markings. MBB.

(The inspiration for composing Mirrors came when I saw my reflection while parking my car in front of a building’s large window.)

If the performer so wishes, a 12-sided die may be used before performance to determine what the opening pitch class will be, with the rest of the piece offset by the same interval (for example, a roll of 4 would require the performer to transpose the entire piece up 4 semitones).

Here is the first in the sequence of dual-interval selections. The half-step and the whole-step, close cousins, but, Do They Get Along? Sure! The traditional musical element that uses both these intervals is the octotonic or diminished scale. So, this material figures prominently in the first section, accompanied by alternating major and minor sevenths. The piece uses mirrored and symmetrical passages in 7ths next, followed by the opposite smaller intervals. Rolled mirrored clusters, symmetrical open chords, every possibility is explored here, each aspect showing its own identity. The intervallic unity gives the piece, and ALL the pieces in this series, a continuity that binds the disparate pianistic applications together into unified and identifiable musics. The major third and perfect fourth go majorly forth together to create music that is totally symmetrical and mirrored. This piece is a cascading Minimalist waterfall of 4ths and half-steps. The half-step can be either inside or outside the 4th, and both are used, singly and mix-and-match fashion, as single notes and as chords. The fingerings are SUPER-simple. 4 2 1 or 4 3 1, usually together, but mixed as well. There are mirrored chords throughout as well. The composition uses black keys in bunches, or white keys all on their own. Keyboard topography is a large determining factor in ALL these Etudes, as the object was to create both musical moods and technical challenges, using as much hand-to-hand topographical mirroring as could be found, within a given interval or interval set. This piece has a rolling movement throughout, and even the dissonances sparkle! Approx. running time is 3 mins. Pedaling is marked throughout. MBB.

Here is Etude 1.5 using the minor third and its inverse, the Major 6th, as its only materials. A Minimalist flavor characterizes this piece. All manner of topographically identical and mirrored, symmetrical structures are found here, sometimes with multiple layers of intervallic unity. All the gestures are shaped the same, until the penultimate segment, with the ONLY deviation from absolute topographical mirroring, which is then followed by a triplet figure in contrary motion, both within and between each line. Lastly, a Cut, and a serene, white-key-based coda. Look for the rest of the set as both single titles and as a complete volume coming soon. Approx running time is just over 3 mins.

Etude 2.0 uses the major third as its component interval. Major 7th and augmented arpeggios predominate. Some are slow and graceful, others fast and turbulent, changing octaves with each iteration. Still others are pointillistically distributed between the hands. Octaves with major thirds attached to the outer ranges take mirrored, topographically identical structures, and explore the lowest and highest registers at the conclusion. Approx. running time is 3 mins 30 secs. More etudes to follow, til the set of 25 is complete. Once the single interval pieces have been posted, the combination pieces begin. All the possible groups of two have been utilized. Then the groups of three, and finally, the final etude uses all the intervallic elements in turn in one piece. MBB.

When one looks into a mirror, all alone, one sees the shifting colors of the light, of the world outside, and one's own inner light. A psychological kaleidescope... Altered seventh chords are used in the left-hand accompaniment throughout. The melody is less florid than a Chopin or Field piece. The music begins quietly, reaches a peak, and fades to an even softer ending. Approx duration just under 4 mins. Pedal for best clarity or best blend, your choice!

Music and song composed by me♫*´¨`*•.¸¸.♫ Dentro lo specchio (In the mirror) ♫*´¨`*•.¸¸.♫ Di nuovo Natale e di nuovo sto male, mi aggiro smarrita per questa mia vita, le luci, i festoni e tutti più buoni la recita non cambia mai e mentre mi perdo dentro al mio irrisolto modello un sorriso lo stampo sul volto aspetto ogni anno mi venga ridato ciò che mi hanno tolto lo rivoglio indietro e come Dickens ripenso ai natali passati e mi struggo cercando ricordi felici che non ho Mi guardo allo specchio e mi vedo invecchiata che importa se bella non sono mai stata Chi è questa donna non la riconosco non c'è luce negli occhi suoi ma poi prende vita e ad un tratto capisco accetto felice lo scambio di posto io dentro lo specchio lei nella mia vita si muove sicura la guardo impaurita mentre cuoce biscotti e prepara pacchetti ed insieme a mia figlia fa 1000 progetti e mi sento tagliata a metà e batto sul vetro ma lo specchio mi inghiotte non si torna indietro e dentro me.... Completerò frasi a metà espirerò tutto il freddo dall'anima arginerò fragilità dentro lo specchio mio fango ed umiltà pittore io dei giorni miei mi dipingo bella e sono dentro una favola riscriverò nuove realtà in parole e musica la mia bolla magica disegno una lacrima la cancellerai. E dentro lo specchio la vita riflette cammino sul viale delle mie incertezze inciampo in frammenti di sogni proibiti di ali spezzate di voli inibiti Esplode il silenzio nel pianto di un bimbo sta lì imprigionato sospeso in quel limbo mi tende la mano ed è disperato è il bimbo che ho perso quel bimbo mai nato e mi appare suo padre con la sua arroganza mi ripete sei brava, ma non abbastanza ma calpesto e poi butto via la mia inadeguatezza io non sono che questa accettami e forse mi amerai... e comporrò le melodie per annullare le mie attese improbabili solo di me mi ciberò carezze inutili più non cercherò e svuoterò le tasche mie dai sensi di colpa e dai fardelli inutili non placherò conviverò con questa sete implacabile e una mente un po' labile io che vivo ai margini tra sogno e realtà Sono fuori e lo specchio è soltanto un riflesso sono dentro il mio mondo e natale è adesso anche per me.....
