Fanfare for Piano was written to commemorate the acquisition of a new grand piano for the Music Department of San Diego Mesa College. Meditation is dedicated to Professor Emeritus Will Ogdon from the University of California, San Diego, on the occasion of his 82nd birthday. Happy Dance, the earliest piece in this set and most rambunctious, was written for the composer's dear friend, fellow-student-in-the-trenches-of-UCSD and college roommate Victor P. Zupanc. The set contains three pieces: Fanfare for Piano - Meditation - Happy Dance.

Duration: 24 minutes, 32 pp. Description: Triptych for Piano, “Phoenix†invokes the fabulous Arabian bird and emblem of immortality, who—after centuries of life—is consigned to the fire only to be reborn from the ashes in all the vigor of youth and beauty. The piece captures the life cycle of this celebrated rara avis in a triptych arrangement of three “panels.†Entitled “Embersâ€, the first panel depicts the transformative energy of a lively hearth fire throwing off sparks, erupting with sudden pops of pine pitch, crumbling into hot dusty heaps. The central “Elegy†reaches back to the comforts of traditional piano sound, arriving like the work of memory. The final panel of the triptych is punningly entitled “Meter-morphosisâ€, linking Ovidian myths of transformation with the musical measure of the bar line. The piece is in three movements: Embers (still glowing) - Elegy - Meter-morphosis.

Published by Pitch Perfect Music Services (A0.1512874). Phil Dickson is a Scot, living in Yorkshire, who has been composing light classical style piano pieces for many years. His musical idols include John Field, Chopin, Mozart, Gershwin, The Beatles and Hoagy Carmichael.This is Phil’s first album, called ‘Archipelago’. It was recorded, produced and mixed at John Parr’s (famed for ‘St Elmo’s Fire’ and numerous pop songs and movie soundtracks in the ‘80s and ‘90s) intimate studio ‘Somewhere in Yorkshire’. Each of the 9 tracks has its own distinctive character but there is a clear, unique signature across all of the compositions. In CD form, the album is ideal to have playing in the room, or the car, but equally merits being listened to with intent as each piece has it’s own narrative. The title track ‘Archipelago’ was inspired by the glorious islands off the coast of Argyle – which is definitely one of the most beautiful areas in the world. Each track has its own backstory, and Phil would be very happy to relate them to any musician or listener who would like to find out more. It overlooks our big backyard, some trees and brush, a couple of fields, and some small mountains in the distance. My studio is set up so that as I play I can look outside.This year in Tennessee we’ve had more snow than normal. There have been many school closings. Even Tennessee Tech shut down at times, which hardly ever happens.So I’ve had some opportunities to sit in my studio in the middle of the day, look out my window at the beautiful falling snow, and write music.I began today’s piece a few weeks ago, during one of the largest snowfalls I’ve seen since I moved here from Wisconsin. I composed a few measures that I liked, couldn’t think of where to go next, and put it aside for a time. For the next few days I kept coming back to it, always liking what I had already written, but not able to add anything new.Then we had another snowfall. This time I was able to finish the basic structure of the piece, but I got stuck when I started to polish it up.A couple of days ago it snowed yet again, and I completed the work and recorded it.Today is Saturday, and it’s not snowing as I write this. However, they’re predicting more snow on Monday, which is usually the day I edit my blog posts. [Last minute update: No snow on Monday, although we did get 2 inches of rain.]Apparently, this piece owes its existence to frozen precipitation. I considered naming it Paean to the Snow Muses, but I think I’ll stick with my original title, February.

Every year, I post arrangements and videos of songs that I consider to be important either in the way they touch listeners, in how they are used, or iif they have stood the test of time. This arrangement is my first one for the 2020-2021 school year.And what a year it has been! With the global pandemic, many are struggling with physical illness or health challenges, personal trial, loss, or life's difficulties. Like many others, in these challenging times, I turn to music. ...like a small boat...sending big waves into motion Fight Song, written by Rachel Platten and Davve Bassett, has become an anthem of faith and belief for any person that is going through a challenge and brings comfort to many. The song was recorded in 2014 and won iHeartRadio's Music Award for Best Lyrics. When I pick songs to arrange, they are often ones that play over and over in my brain. I've been working on this one for several weeks. My arrangement is for the early advanced player. The arrangement starts quite simply but builds and builds into powerful repetitions of the chorus with arpeggios in the left hand and in the right hand and lots of fun crashing chords. These four atonal works were composed spontaneously at the Music Studio of Fred Scorza in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1989. Though the language is typical of the so-called post-Webern avant-garde led by Boulez and Stockhausen, these four pieces are in a lighter vein full of surprises throughout. The title, a pun on the telephone dialing system known as touch-tones, refers to the spontaneous improvisatory character of the music.

It was also the B-side of his single Struttin'. Later that same year, English singer Joe Cocker released a slower version of the song on his album I Can Stand a Little Rain.
