Published by Brian Hardy (A0.793570). This arrangement was created for the Lincolnshire Music Service 'Massed Strings Project' which brought together 300 young string players of varying abilities. There are three violin parts, three viola, three cello and two bass together with timps, a bass drum and cymbals. There is also a piano part for rehearsal purposes but which may also be used in performance. The string parts range from elementary to advanced to give the very young players experience in an orchestral environment. Hall of the Mountain King starts very softly with the lower string pizzicato and ends with a crashing climax. Written as an encore for the Ohio Northern University West African Drumming and Dancing Ensemble for their final performance with the Ghana Dance Ensemble's Ben Ayettey. Written and performed in 2016 for marimba, lead (tenor) pan, cello pans, electric guitar (finger picking style), bass guitar (tab included), and drum set. Quite a fun piece to play, and it will definitely get your audience on their feet!

Asian Symmetries by Dan Heslink Asian Symmetries is a fanciful work which draws loosely from the musical procedures and sonic preferences of Indonesian and other Asian musical styles. It is scored for three percussionists, each with their own battery of instruments. Gamelan-like impressions might be inferred from the cyclical nature of its rhythm, using metal plates like cymbals and gongs to mark large units of rhythmic time. Also evocative are the faster moving elaborations and a preponderance of metallophones in the instrumentation. The work is medium to difficult in its demands. There are quick changes of instrument, planned to be manageable but requiring some attention to logistics Each player’s performance station must remain stationary, with all instruments in reach without moving the performer’s position. Percussion I and Percussion III players must set up next to each other so that they may share the tenor drum. A selection of mallets that allows different striking surfaces to sound good without undue picking up and setting down of mallets is suggested. Changes of meter and tempo occur, and an odd meter section sporting measures in 12/8, 6/8, 11/8 may require some additional attention. Winter Bells composed by Dan Heslink Imagine a cold winter evening in which church bells, sleigh bells, and other bell sounds are mixed into a tantalizing soundscape. Winter Bells explores the interaction of these sounds through chimes, sleigh bells, orchestra bells, marimba, vibraphone, two triangles, large suspended cymbal, large tam-tam, and two timpani. Winter Bells requires seven performers; the two chime players share one rack of chimes and one part. It presents mostly modest demands, both in performing technique in the number and type of percussion instruments. Challenges include rapid passage work in the part for orchestra bells, requiring smooth and even negotiation of the instrument, and a tour de force of polyrhythms at the end, where all bell timbres of the soundscape are juxtaposed. Some parts present more challenge than others, making it an ideal selection for ensembles populated by players of uneven levels of experience. To some listeners Winter Bells is possibly reminiscent of a sleigh ride without the horse’s hooves. It is sure to be an audience pleaser during a winter concert, especially close to Christmas and Hanukkah.

The arrangement allows flexibility, so this piece can be performed using tuned bottles (25cl, 33cl and 75cl), lip whistle, finger snaps, complemented with xylophones and optionally with voices to sing the lyrics too. This arrangement was made during the 2020 quarantine, when the world was shutdown due to a world virus pandemic. Some of the music students didn’t have their music instruments at home, so this arrangement came up to fill that gap and it is perfect to keep doing music with the available option of instruments.On each rehearsal letter, you can play optional improvisations, while keeping the voices 5-8. These improvisations can be easily done using the C major pentatonic scale or the note ranges presented on the right, that even include Eâ™ and Bâ™. If played using lip whistle, bendings will be possible too. This arrangement presents 8 voices and an alternative solution for voice 8, that makes it easier to be performed as it is the place where bottles are divided between the players. There is also an optional bass line to complement voice eight one octave bellow. In order to keep it simple, neither dynamics or articulations were included and the notes were represented always in the middle octave in G clef. The correct pitch ranges are presented in the performance notes.The amount of water will change the pitch differently depending if you are blowing or doing percussion on a bottle. When blowing, the more water you use, the higher the pitch will be, but while doing percussions more water means lower pitch. A good option, in order to save time during rehearsals, is to fill the bottles with water, marking the level with a pen, and then filling the bottle with the desired amount of hot wax instead of water. This way, when the wax cools down you can have a tuned bottle without requiring to tune it again every single rehearsal. Please note that the bottles should be made of glass and that different aspects change the performance. For percussion, straight bottles are better to tune as the curves in the bottles tend to produce unstable pitches. The extreme notes of the range might not be available in every single bottle, so you might need to try some alternatives. For example the high A is available in some beer bottles, while the low G is available in larger 75cl bottles of champaign. This composition begins with a 12/8 rock tempo. Although it is written in C, the composition is begins in D Minor. The Marimba keeps the 12/8 going while the other three become punctuations. The punctuation continues while the Glockenspiel plays the melody. At measure 15 the song moves into a 6/8 feel. At measure 34 the song returns to the original 12/8 feel. The composition then splits to where the Vibraphone takes on harmony in the 12/8 feel while the Glockenspiel and Xylophone take on a 6/8 countermelody. A short bridge is created by stacking the other 2 on top of the Vibraphone and Marimba 12/8 feel. Then it splits again to where the Xylophone stays with the Vibraphone and Marimba pattern and the Glockenspiel goes off on it's own. During this time the Glockenspiel folds in the 6/8 melody, creating a pleasant conflict. The song D.C.'s to the original 12/8 content. The Devil's Rag is a fun little xylophone rag based on some of the famous Green brothers' rags that really made xylophone literature catch on. This is more advanced and requires some quick hands, but is really entertaining to play and listen to. It is mostly in C minor, but plays in C major as well to depict the xylophone player trying to entertain the devil while keeping their own sanity. The player is the jester of the underground, making some interesting music and harmony while keeping rhythmic ideas quick and steady. Truly a joy to play.
