This piece features 4 movements, and tells a story throughout. It starts with a slow moving part with the flute section taking the melody as well as a flute solo. It then moves to a fast and exciting movement, but eventually levels out. In the same movement, there is a low section where the melody layers on top of other lines. The 2nd movement then ends with a percussion break. The 3rd Movement has a Latin feel to it and starts with percussion, where they set up a consistent groove. Then we build to eventually the melody and trade it between altos, and the flutes, and oboe. Then the melody repeats trading between trumpets and clarinets. Throughout this, the low instruments set up a consistent rhythm while moving through the changes. Then the 3rd movement comes to an end. The last and final movement features a clarinet solo to start it off, which gives a nod to Rhapsody in Blue. It closes off with an alto solo to end it. The piece changes keys from Eb-Bb-Db-Eb.

Published by Benjamin Pritchard (A0.986863). This piece was originally written for jazz ensemble and then arranged for concert band. This was done, in part, to make available concert band literature that utilizes jazz/rock instruments (guitar, bass, piano) and improvisation. There are many arrangements of rock and pop tunes available to band directors. While those arrangements sometimes include bass parts they rarely, if ever, have guitar or piano/keyboard parts. Why not? Why not include these parts, even if they are optional? In addition, I’ve noticed that there is very little concert band literature that involves improvisation. Again, why not? I believe that this is the concert band literature of the future – the integrated utilization of electric guitar, keyboards, and improvisation. This piece is my first attempt at such a venture. Having just finished the premier performance of the original jazz ensemble version of 7 to 9 I thought it would be a good platform. Most of 7 to 9 transitions between 7/4 and 9/4. It is a fun, quirky piece with a Latin feel. There is a short 5-bar swing section in the middle for open solos. There is also a one chord solo section later in the piece for less experienced improvisers. The students will really enjoy putting this together, especially with the electric guitar, piano, and bass. It adds a completely new dimension to the concert band as well as an overall excitement. The piece ends with a long building Latin groove with a jam feel to it. The guitarist ends this build with an improvised solo which soars above the rest of the band. It is a fun piece to play but requires a great deal of focus due to the changing meter and odd phrase lengths and entrances. There is only a midi recording available at this time. The drum groove is complex and integral to the arrangement. There are also electric bass, synthesizer, and drum machine parts to make it sound more authentic. The band must have solid lead trumpet and drum set players. There are optional percussion parts, however, that break the full drum set up into separate parts, but will still sound authentic.

Back to School 2015 Its title says it all – Skeet Shooting with Mom’s Fiestaware imagines a dangerous excursion where a child sneaks off for some fun with Mom’s colorful dinnerware, gets caught, and has to glue everything back together. The piece’s use of mixed meter and soli writing will challenge any high school band, but its use of grooves, aleatoric notation, and bizarre techniques (including dropping a cymbal) will make it fun and accessible for everyone. Originally commissioned by the Riverside Brookfield High School concert band for their retiring director Kevin McOlgan, the only stipulation given to the composer was for it to feature McOlgan’s primary obsession: fiestaware.
