Concert Band - SKU: A0.917412 Composed by Gregory Fritze. 20th Century,Contemporary,Folk. Score and parts. 370 pages. Musica Nova USA #6321277. Published by Musica Nova USA (A0.917412). The Four Seasons in the Basque Country is a 4 movement symphony for concert band. It is the Third Prize Winner of the 2020 American Prize in Composition - Concert Band. Grade 5, duration 27 minutes. The piece depicts four different places in the Basque country that the composer feels best show the changes of season. The first movement is Winter in the Costa Norte (Galerna). Galerna is on the northerncoast and is subject to harsh storms in the winter. As the piece starts off with a light-hearted dance in thepiccolo, a storm is approaching from afar. At first the storm seems to be in the distance but as it comes closer it overtakes the festivities in a bluster. For a short time two conductors are needed as the concertband is split into two groups – one showing the light-hearted dance led by the piccolo, the other thecacophony of the storm led by the percussion. The storm overtakes everything as it ends the movement with a flourish. The second movement Spring in Rioja Alavesa is a calming contrast to the first movement like the freshness of a spring day. The sun rises and shines beams of light onto the acres of grape vines. After a timea short rain comes to refresh and clean the plants. The third movement Autumn at the Guggenheim Museum is in a traditional 3rd movement form of a symphony, minuet and trio, but the harmonies sometimes use bitonality, having the melody in one key while the accompaniment is in another to suggest surrealism. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbaois one of the world’s most famous museums, not only for the surreal art inside, but also because of the architecture of the building itself. The fourth movement Summer in Bilbao is based on a dance melody composed in the Ezpata- dantza Basque style. It employs a rhythmic element with alternating 6/8 and 3â„4 meters where the eighth notes are basically equal, but in the dance the 3â„4 meter is actually a little bit longer. This type of subtlemanipulation of rhythm is used similarly in the Viennese Waltz, when the 3rd beat would be stretched outto accommodate the dancers. The Ezpata-dantza dance continues until the Altza Gastiak, the officialsong of the Bilbao Athletic Club, the local soccer team of Bilbao, is heard. After this the Ezpata-dantzamelody is transformed from a happy dance to a triumphant melody and rousing finale. In The Four Seasons in the Basque Country all of the themes are original except for the short excerpt ofAltza Gastiakin the 4th movement. Some themes are composed in the style of Basque folk dances.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over one hundred compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, South America and Europe that have been performed extensively throughout the world. Many of his compositions are available on ITunes, Youtube and Soundcloud. He has been a frequent traveler to Spain since 1993 and has promoted compositions by Spanishcomposers around the world. He is the only composer who has been commissioned six times by Spanishbands for Certamen competitions, with each band winning first prize. His compositions are recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Recordsand others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer at many colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1954 and has Composition degrees from the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University. He now resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida

Concert Band - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1335323 Composed by Kendra Brown. 21st Century. 26 pages. Kendra Brown #921147. Published by Kendra Brown (A0.1335323). The main theme is inspired by the introduction of the piece. Delicate and child-like. The ostinato in the beginning of the piece that double reeds have displays the feeling of a “child-like†waltz. The pattern is in 3 but it should be played as if it is in 6/8, with emphasis on beats 1 and 3. There should be weight to the sound but it should not be heavy. Sometimes in life, (as both teens and adults) we tend to get caught up in stress or worries and we forget to take a break, relax and destress a little. This piece reminds us to go back to our childlike roots. As the theme in Section A expands, it takes a turn in Section B where the tempo picks up. (Players are encouraged to have as much fun as they can with this part.) At and after the exposed bassoon part at m.50, in the words of my old high school band director, “Let it rip potato chip!†(Meaning give it all you’ve got and have fun). Brass are encouraged to play the dynamics as written in this section but listen to each other. Section C is a bridge to the 7/8 in Section D. Section D, reintroduces the theme in the form of a trumpet solo while brass and some of the woodwinds have the ostinato. Be careful euphonium & tuba because you’re missing a beat on purpose! Section E is the “Medley†of all the parts that were previously played with only tuba playing in the relative minor so it sticks out at the bottom of the ensemble. This is symbolic of the piece itself, showing that the pressures of life can be overcome by keeping a good attitude and persevering through those tough times that you encounter. Section F is another “bridge†beginning with the flute solo reiterating the theme one last time before the “descent and climb†(starting at m.137) to the final destination: Section G. Section G should be played like an overture. Full and with joy and a “coming alive-ness†to it therefore bringing life to the once dead emotions that once were. The ending with the oboe/bassoon duet should be played as quietly as possible & as in tune as possible.

Contact Information: Emmett Anglin at 803-775-4400 or rabish@fromtier.com The piece is in the Public Domain and has been out of print for many years. It is typical of the ragtime music written in the early 20th Century and a lot of fun to play. It is about 3 or 4 minutes long depending on which repeats the conductor takes. It has parts not included in the original for bells, 2nd & 3rd Alto Sax and others so that it will fit well with the modern concert band. If you get it and there is any problem (wrongly transposed parts etc.) I will fix it. Just call me or e-mail me and we can talk. Stella Nova - Grade 2 - Duration 4:20 min.... a new star. In the beginning there is darkness, filled with dust in nothingness. It takes some time for massive clouds to form from this deep cold nebula. But gradually they grow and then attract each other. They are therefore getting bigger and unite with huge momentum resulting in a large whole thing. Now the cold diminishes until it even disappears. It's getting warm, then hot and hotter, finally a spark ignites and a new fresh light is kindled. From now on it brightens up the dark and gives the warmth, which is indispensable for new life to arise. With a duration of approx. 4 1/2 minutes and grade 2, the piece is suitable for a relaxing rest point in the concert programme for the audience and the musicians as well. The PDF contains the score and all parts, already multiplied accordingly for a common number of musicians in a concert band. No duplication of parts necessary - so, just print and go. The paper layout is actually designed for European A4 paper, but printing on 8.5 x 11 inches format has no effect on readability.More about the composer: www.helmut-kogler.comMore music by Helmut Kogler: www.pentharmonics.com

Includes: Digital .pdf w/Full Score and PartsClashing Destinies was originally a work for digital media composed in March-April of 2023, later adapted for Full Orchestra/Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Clashing Destinies takes the listener through a spiral into insanity, starting with the constant thudding of the lows. Even as different parts add on, the thudding persists, representing one's inability to think clearly. There is a sharp dissonant line initially played by the glockenspiel that comes up time and time again, representing the internal panic that cuts through one's rational thoughts during their spiral into madness. Finally we hit the breaking point, a moment of silence followed by the screams of pain one experiences after reaching their breaking point. Soon after, a screaming trumpet takes the spotlight, any form of rational thought has now dithered away. Nothing is left but screams. After an intense battle of struggling to find a grasp on reality, there is a moment of calm. Things slow down as it is believed sanity is being regained, but still, there is that persistent thudding and sharp dissonance. Alas, the realization occurs, it is impossible to regain sanity. As the brass section overtakes the calm of the woodwinds, insanity fully takes over. The homestretch of this piece is pure chaos, every motif comes back. It is one huge reprise of all the feelings that have been experienced, except now they are all sounding much more rapidly, all just a small part of the chaos that is ensuing. Now there is nothing left to do except yell for help. There are three final screams, three final pleads for help. After screaming for help, it is realized... No one is there. Now there is nothing, left unresolved, all alone in the silence.

Sometimes we see patterns as events unfold in our lives. Departures was written following and during a time when I witnessed a number of people leaving-moving away, taking a different path in life, or leaving this life altogether. A single, sighing motive unites all three sections of this piece. It is heard right away in the flutes, takes a yearning tone in the middle section, and returns wistfully at the end of the piece. As with every departure in life, one is left wondering what the arrival will be like. The first and last sections of the piece are in a moderate to slow 6/8 while the middle is in 4/4. There are brief solos for horn, alto sax, and oboe (cued in clarinet). The recording available here is a real band with some real mistakes that hopefully don't get in the way too much. The download includes the full score and set of parts. See all works from The Beat Sellery at www.thebeatsellerycom.

'The City of Manaus' incorporates various musical elements such as multimetre time signatures and vast tambral exploration to represent a chase through the Amazon Jungle. The driving pulse, short note lengths and quick tempo reflect an action-packed chase. This climaxes before a reduction in texture - exploring of the tone colours of the woodwinds, and brass, representative of the birds and pristine environment of the natural world. The tension then grows as the texture thickens before the chase resumes, racing once again through the jungle. The 'City of Manaus' is located deep within the Amazon in Northern Brazil. The actual town was founded in 1693 but the history of colonisation of the area begun in 1499 after the Spanish discovered the mouth of the Amazon River. Being the largest city in the Amazon, Manaus is the centre of life in the region, and the namesake of this piece arises from the way this city seems to be the beacon of humanity in a totally natural landscape. Written for Concert Band, this piece is one which takes the listener on a journey to the depths of the Amazon rainforest to find the 'City of Manaus'. It is suitable for Highschool aged students and professional groups alike and can be performed with flexible instrumentation due to doubling in numerous parts. Grade 2.5-3.

Title: Fear and Awe - A Concert Band CompositionComposer: Simon ArrudaDescription:Fear and Awe is a compelling concert band composition composed by Simon Arruda, a piece that evokes a powerful narrative of trepidation and courage in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. This musical journey takes the audience on an emotional rollercoaster as it navigates through the shadowed valleys of uncertainty, ultimately inspiring hope and determination through its rhythmic and evocative composition. The composition is crafted to convey the contrasting emotions of fear and awe. As the performance unfolds, the audience is immersed in a world where darkness looms, yet the spirit of bravery burns brightly. The rhythmic march in the percussion section serves as the backbone of the composition, grounding the piece with an insistent and driving beat. It symbolizes the relentless march of time and the persistence required to face the challenges of life. This rhythmic motif forms a bridge between the different sections of the band, connecting them in a cohesive and harmonious whole. The dark and haunting melodies played by the woodwinds and brass sections create an atmosphere of trepidation, echoing the moments of doubt and uncertainty that all heroes must confront. Yet, interspersed within these haunting passages are bursts of courage and determination. As the composition progresses, the tension between fear and awe gradually gives way to a sense of hope and inspiration. The band's collective efforts reflect the resilience and indomitable spirit of humanity. The music inspires listeners to march onward, to face the darkness with unwavering resolve, and to emerge victorious on the other side.Fear and Awe is a musical journey that draws audiences into a world where heroes rise to overcome adversity. It reminds us all that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit has the power to triumph and inspire. With its powerful percussion-driven rhythm, evocative melodies, and orchestration. This piece is suggested for beginner-level 1 band.

Concert Band - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1023994 Composed by Kyle Wernke. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 425 pages. Kyle Wernke Publishing #2120113. Published by Kyle Wernke Publishing (A0.1023994). Formations, is a celebration of the cosmos; a celebration of the tiniest of particles to the largest galaxies and everything in between. Since I was a child I've looked up at the sky and seen a world full of wonder, beauty, and mystery. The same wonder that filled my heart when I was in elementary school still takes hold when I look up now, decades later. I chose the formation of things for a specific reason. When I was a kid I had a habit of asking my parents where everything came from. It wasn't enough that a star was there, I needed to know how it got there and if possible why it was there. As I grew up I developed an immense appetite for almost all things science and history and with that came some of the answers I needed. The reality of how these things came to be was so much more interesting and astounding than my imagination that all these years later I am still captivated by the idea of an exploding star or the Big Bang. So lets take a journey, you and I. First we'll see the death of an immense star and watch as its own gravity rips it apart and forms a black hole. We'll see it feed on matter and light around it until it too finally dies. Next we'll go back 13.7 billion years and watch as tiny particles dance in and out of existence in the endless nothingness that once was. We'll see one of these tiny bits expand in an instant and give rise to everything that ever has been or will be. Watch hydrogen form and gravity pull it into the first stars. Those stars will form galaxies and we'll see glimpses of the Universe as it exists now. Finally, we will travel to the end of time, a trillion years or more into the future. There we will witness the dissipation of the galaxies, the death of stars, and the final moments as even tiny electrons are pulled apart into the nothing from which we all came. Parts of this piece are violent, but we will see that at the end of time, the formation of nothing is just as beautiful as the formation of a star. Everything has its time and everything ends. Premiered by the Hartt Wind Ensemble - Glen Adsit, Conductor.

Some years ago, I saw a video of an orangutang sort of running about with some latin music and it was labled Salsa Time and I knew that someday I would write a piece with that title. Well, once it was finished, and I listened and meditated over what it said to me, what I heard was the westward migration of the early settlers of America, only in and through Mexico. Journey To The Setting Sun became my title, but to give it a bit more authenticity, the title is in Spanish, and has become Viaje al Atardeser. The piece opens with a train whistle. If you have none, the Flute 1 & 2 parts have it simulated. Rehearsal markers 1A through 1D serve as layers that lead to the main melody starting at A. At letter B, the Solo 1st trumpet takes on the melody with a slight variation of rhythm. There is a trombone trio from C to D. If you have 3 stong trombonists, I recommend the Eupf and Baritone TC opt out of playing through this section, in order to highlight your great trombone section. *Optional* You may, at your discretion put a fermata after the first beat of the bar before D and allow your solo trumpeter to play a free form cadenza. The mp3 has a sample of how this would sound. The cadenza would end with the pick-up to letter D and you may feel free to let that high note of the solo trumpet ring for a second or two before cuing the rest of the band in. Although from D to the a tempo 4 bars before E is a trumpet solo, the most crucial part of that section is the tambourine part going into double time, creating that extra pop and sense of urgency. This piece represents a watershed moment in my life, as it is my first composition for Concert Band.I encourage all feedback at sirlunch@gmail.comI hope you enjoy it!

This lyrical piece is a delightful way to introduce your young band to ballad style. Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes. Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

'Spirited Away' is a multi award-winning 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Studio Ghibli. It tells the story of Chihiro, a ten-year-old girl who, while moving to a new neighbourhood, enters a strange spirit world. After her parents are turned into pigs by a witch, Chihiro takes a job working in her bathhouse to find a way to free herself and her parents and return to the human world. Originally released in Japan in 2001, the film received universal acclaim, becoming the highest-grossing film in Japanese history, a record it held until 2020. 'Spirited Away' is regarded by many as the greatest animated film of all time; it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards, making it the first, and to date only, hand-drawn and non-English-language animated film to win the award. The film score was composed and conducted by Miyazaki's regular collaborator Joe Hisaishi, and performed by the New Japan Philharmonic. Â The 'Sootballs' (Susuwatari) of the title refer to helpful, super strong balls of soot that assist Chihiro whilst working in the bathhouse. Available for concert band (with a featured part for piano) for the first time, bring this characteristic slice of Japanese character music to your next concert of film music for a taste of something different.

Over the past few years I have become obsessed with Norse Mythology, and I mean real Norse Mythology. I say that withquotes because in my research I realized that a lot of people tell different stories. This is mainly because back when Christianity was growing, the Christians saw anything that wasn't Christian as pagan, so they got rid of it all. So that is why Greek, Roman, and Norse religions faded into mythologies, and all that was left was passed around in folk tales. And also because Marvel tells a very different tale of the mythology than the research I have collected and I want people to know these stories. Now moving passed the history lesson and into the music. This is interesting for me because this is the biggest original piece that I've ever made. This is going to be a multimovement piece, and this is the 1st movement, Ginnungagap, the endless void. This movement describes The Void, and the two lands of Fire(Muspelheim) and Ice(Niflhiem).Starting with The Void, it describes the blackness, and I use the absence of instruments to give this feeling, but however to give2 of the other themes to foreshadow it. It moves into this wild cascading theme for the Niflheim theme to describe the cold cascading environment of the world. After that it slows into a dark and ominous theme for Muspelheim(Surtr's Destiny). This was an interesting part to make because in mythology, Surtr, also referred to as Surt, is the fabled fire giant who destroys Asgard. No one knows where hecomes from, but from the moment of his creation, he knew of his destiny to destroy Asgard so he spent all of his time forging his sword to burrow into Asgard. I used a break drum to symbolize a hammer hitting an anvil to forge a sword, a lingering sound of Surtr's destiny. After this, I brought both themes together to resemble The Clash of the two worlds to create the Norse universe. The final theme in this first movement is entitled I am Ymir. In myhtology, Ymir is the father of everything. Created from the clash, he gave creation to all the gods, humans, giants, elves, and dwarves. This final theme takes Surtr's theme and flipsit to be mo.

Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.886128 Composed by Jason McChristian. Contemporary. Score and parts. 61 pages. Jason Gary McChristian #553001. Published by Jason Gary McChristian (A0.886128). This work is comprised of three series, each series contains four issues. It may be performed in a number of different ways; each issue or series may be performed separately or, the entire work, consisting of twelve issues and a Prologue, may be performed as a whole. In its entirety, the running time of Strange Myths and Wondrous Images is approximately forty-five minutes. Each issue represents an element: either an archetype, place, or an emotion, commonly found in comic book stories. As a whole, Strange Myths and Wondrous Images tells a particular story arc, one that is intentionally void of specific details, inviting the listener to imagine the particulars. Each series also contains its own sub-plot and emotional progression, while the formal structure suggests the traditional symphonic form. Each issue has a duration of three to four minutes, limited to a small, but intensely expressive amount of thematic material. The challenge inherent in this limitation was to create enough contrast, yet not so much as to require more time to resolve it, therefore, each issue is self-contained. Duration 3:00. Score 9 pg. Parts 2 pg. ea. Instrumentation: small wind band, no percussion. Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He therefore developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather more than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements which seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in-balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material, but developing it by sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

Giovanni Gabrieli: Jubilate Deo (Ch. 136). Instrumentation: small concert band, no percussion. Here is a stunningly beautiful example of Renaissance polyphony and a mesmerizing fast-paced recital number. Program this initially to set an exciting mood or as an encore to leave the listeners in a jubilant afterglow. The parts are not tricky, but plan to rehearse the many subtleties of dynamic contrast between the various sub-groups and the overall articulations.
