The expression King Cotton in general refers to the historically high importance of cotton as a cash crop in the southern United States. This fun arrangement and challenging arrangement for alto saxophone and euphonium is sure to be a crowd favorite and includes altissimo passages in the saxophone part.The Composer:John Philip Sousa (November 6, 1854 – March 6, 1932) was an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era, known primarily for American military and patriotic marches. Because of his mastery of march composition, he is known as The March King, or the American March King due to his British counterpart, Kenneth J. Alford also being known by the former nickname. Among his best-known marches are The Stars and Stripes Forever (National March of the United States of America), Semper Fidelis (Official March of the United States Marine Corps), The Liberty Bell (used as the theme for Monty Python's Flying Circus), The Thunderer and The Washington Post.The Arranger:Email: alburden9012@eagle.fgcu.eduAlexander Burden is a Florida born, professional musician and music educator residing in Southwest Florida. Burden holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree with an instrumental concentration from the Bower School of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida. There he studied under world renowned saxophonist Mario Bernardo. He also holds an Associate of Arts degree with a Music Education and Saxophone Performance concentration from Eastern Florida State College where he was a student of James Bishop. During his time at the Bower School of music, he served as principle saxophonist in the FGCU Wind Orchestra, lead alto in the Jazz Band Flight: Jazz at FGCU, and played soprano saxophone in the Bower Saxophone Quartet. Alexander was selected to play tenor saxophone in the 2017 National Intercollegiate Band as well as principle alto saxophone in the 2017 Florida All-State Intercollegiate Band and tenor saxophone in the 2016 Florida All-State Intercollegiate Band. In November of 2015, Alexander participated in a critically acclaimed performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City with the FGCU Wind Orchestra.

The music is in A-B-A form beginning with a fanfare containing a combination of open and complex chords, giving it an ancient sound. The middle section is a relaxed intermezzo called Lear Asleep which is followed by a return to the fanfare. The music has been beautifully scored by Ralph Sauer for a 16-part large brass ensemble with timpani and percussion and is appropriate for advanced performers. Mr. Sauer has dedicated this work to the memory of Adolf Bud Herseth.

Sweetwater Brass Press #4111581. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808688). Henry Clay Work, Civil War era song writer and abolitionist, composed Kingdom Coming in 1862. Chicago’s Root & Cady published it in April of that year, Christy’s Minstrels premiered it and it became enormously popular. The lyrics to Kingdom Coming, also known as The Year of Jubilo, were written as though slaves in the Confederacy were celebrating their upcoming freedom. However, the song was actually released eight months before President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Interestingly, Kingdom Coming also gained popularity in the South. A Southern edition was published in August in 1864, and the song remained a favorite in the former Confederacy for some years. Kingdom Coming has been used as theme or background music in a number of film, television and radio settings. Almost certainly its most popular iteration in modern times was the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra’s 1952 recording under the title Doodletown Fifers. This arrangement is a show-off piece for each member of the quintet. It moves along at a brisk pace of about 108, begins in the key of C and changes to A-flat, then B-flat. The first time through the melody, all instruments perform ensemble. Each succeeding repetition features an instrumentalist, starting with tuba and working up to Trumpet 1. The piece ends with another ensemble version. There are no exceptionally out-of-normal-playing-range notes: Trumpets 1 and 2 both play their B-flat below the scale several times, and Trumpet 2 plays G below the scale; Horn in F also plays its G below the scale; Trombone’s range is G at the bottom of the scale to D above the scale; Tuba’s lowest note is A-flat below the scale. Trumpet 1 will probably triple tongue its repetition of the melody, and some triple tonguing may be called for near the end of the piece for Trumpets 1 and 2 and Trombone. Julius Katterfeldt was born in Wandsbek in 1813. Wandsbek was not yet part of Hamburg at that time. His father Johann Hinrich Katterfeldt was the organist at the famous Schnitger organ of Hamburg's main church St. Jakobi. He also gave his son first music lessons. Later he was a pupil of the famous Christian Heinrich Rinck in Darmstadt. Julius Katterfeldt was first organist at the church of St. Johannes in Eppendorf. In 1840, Katterfeldt was appointed by the Danish king to the post of cathedral organist in Schleswig. After the Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1848 to 1851) he had to give up his organist post at the cathedral. Friedrich von Reventlou (1797-1874) brought Katterfeldt to the monastery church in Preetz, where Renventlou was provost, because of the political quarrels over the county of Holstein. In Preetz he even had to take on sexton duties in addition to organ duties. After the war (Battle of Dybbøl/DK), Schleswig once again belonged to the Republic of Prussia. For this reason, the German Emperor had a new tower built for Schleswig Cathedral in 1864. It can be assumed that the church symphony by Julius Katterfeldt was composed for this purpose beforehand and was therefore later published by the renowned Berlin music publisher BOTE & BOCK. His Church Symphony Opus 18, for brassband and organ, is dedicated to the Prussian Emperor Wilhelm I. Katterfeldt’s Church Symphony is the first original symphonic work for the instrumentation organ and brass band. His son-in-law was the Schwerin cathedral organist George Hepworth (1825-1918). Through his contacts in England, some of J. The publication consists of full scores for each hymn plus separate instrumental parts and an optional simplified keyboard part. All the arrangements are in four parts, reflecting the traditional SATB voicing. The parts include 1st trumpet in B flat; 2nd trumpet in B flat; horn in F; horn in E flat; trombone and optional tuba; optional bass in B flat and bass in E flat. There are also two optional baritone parts in B flat (TC) and C (BC) in case you need them. They are the same as the tenor part. In some carols, you might prefer to assign any baritones to doubling the bass or doubling the melody an octave lower. The baritone part in C is also playable by trombone. The trombone and tuba parts appear on a single staff. Of course, you can use any number of instruments to a particular part. The optional keyboard part has been simplified and whenever possible limited to single notes in the left hand part and no more than two-note chords in the right. Using the keyboard part, you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. Bella Ciao (Goodbye Beautiful) is an Italian protest folk song from the late 19th century, originally sung by the seasonal female rice paddy workers in Northern Italy in protest to the harsh working conditions. The song was modified and adopted as an anthem of the Italian resistance movement by the partisans who opposed the Nazi occupiers between 1943 and 1945. Versions of Bella Ciao continue to be sung worldwide as hymns of freedom and resistance. Written during the Covid -19 Pandemic, Variations on “Bella Ciao’ was inspired by the scenes of music- making by Italian musicians during the darkest days of the pandemic. From rooftops, balconies and deserted piazzas, people continued to express themselves in testaments to the human spirit. This arrangement follows the standard British Brass Band format and includes full set of parts.

Hello to all who happen to stumble onto this piece! My name is Anthony Prudent, and I am a student at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in New York City. This piece is an original composition that was written for the Brass Ensemble in the school. The world premiere of the song occurred on Tuesday, January the 7th. As such, I am distributing this work so that any ensemble, for school or otherwise, can perform it! The piece is roughly three and a half minutes long. However, it can be found challenging at times. Nevertheless, it is a fun piece to perform anywhere and is an excellent form of repertoire for brass players looking for something to engage with their performing groups.

I wrote the Fanfare and Scherzo for this quintet in 1979 using an ink pen and manuscript paper the old-fashioned way. These two movements were premiered by The Palos Verdes Brass Quintet that year and then were largely forgotten as I started working in non-musical areas the next year.After I retired, I ran across them while cleaning out my desk and offered them to the current PVSB Brass Quintet (none of whom were in the original group) and they graciously played them again. I always intended to write two more movements and finally did it 40 years later.The Lullaby calls for flügelhorns and has a vocal part. It is not intended to be sung necessarily but for the lyrics to provide a mood for this dark piece, which is probably best suited for Eddie Munster or Lio. I have sort of a warped sense of humor. The Finale is more serious, but not that much. Aside from the Scherzo the piece is not too difficult. The duration is about 12 minutes.
