Nacionaline vargonininku asociacija #845535. Published by Nacionaline vargonininku asociacija (A0.1251258). 14 Preludes, Op. 20. Fourteen pieces for organ, dedicated to a “beloved friend, Fr. Teodoras Brazys,†presents the largest collection of works for this instrument in Naujalis’ oeuvre. Like Naujalis, Brazys was the graduate of the Church Music School in Regensburg. These fourteen preludes for organ appear to be written in expression of deep affinity and gratitude to a like-minded friend who shared similar values. Some of Naujalis’ organ preludes have been included in music collections abroad – by Mieczysław Surzyński in Warsaw and Joseph Joubert in Paris. Juozas Naujalis (1869–1934) – Lithuanian composer and organist. In 1892, he was appointed organist and choir leader at the Kaunas Cathedral, a position he held until his death. Naujalis became actively involved in organizing local musical societies and institutions. As an outcome of his groundbreaking work, a number of important private entities, such as the first boys’ choir in Lithuania based at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas, courses and the school for organists (1911), the first legal Lithuanian bookshop and music publishing house in Kaunas (1905–1912), the first music magazine Vargonininkas (The Organist) and calendars for organists published in Lithuanian (1909–1910), and the music school in Kaunas (1919), have been launched. In 1908, he founded the Children Society and St. Gregory Society for Organists, which was later reorganised into St. Cecilia Society for church musicians (1924). Naujalis was also the first Lithuanian composer to achieve recognition abroad. His church music was published in Regensburg, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Leipzig and Paris. In recognition of his merits in the field of church music he was made Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy in Rome, in 1929.A total of 29 organ pieces by Naujalis were recorded at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas in 2019.

SOULS AT REST for ORGAN Playing time: Appx. 2:40 Services: All Saints, All Souls, Autumn, Memorial, any The pedal plays the somber yet peaceful melody in this rather introspective work, with the swell box opening now and then to allow the keyboard to give little dialogues that echo the melody. A dissonant mood in the middle section is reminiscent of our dismay and confusion over the loss of loved ones, but the return of the melody at the end soothes us once more with eternal hope. All Saints and All Souls are beautiful celebrations that are harbingers of the close of the year. As the beginnings of the pre-winter feasts, they are also the earliest to shine light in the darkness as many cemeteries become illuminated by the warm glow of thousands of candles placed in commemoration of the dearly departed. Although I composed this piece under the spiritual influence of those two holy days, the work may be used at any service where a reflective, meditative piece is needed. The registrations I give here are merely suggestions; adapt at will to your instrument and the ambience you wish to create. God bless!

This work for trombone and organ is part of the 2024 Suite for Trombone and Organ, which is geared toward the younger, less experienced player, with works that can be performed at church services and other occasions. This Festive March on the Old Hundredth is based on the hymn tune, known to most as Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow. It is written in joyful fashion, and could work well as a festive prelude or joyful postlude. The range is one that a typical high school player (or advanced middle schooler) could play, with rhythms well within the reach of players at that level. The solo part is well-supported by the organ part, with hopes that rehearsals can be minimal in putting this together for performance. There are two other movements to this 2024 Suite, both available on this site as well. Please give that young musician the chance to shine! Also included is a treble clef part that could be played by trumpet, treble clef baritone, or tenor sax.

What is known for sure is that Luther sent his Disputation on the Power of Indulgences by post to the Archbishop of Mainz on October 31, 1517. Meant only as a set of assertions for debate in hopes of reforming the church, Luther's act began a revolution in the Christian church that had great consequences. One major change was the use of more simple music that could be sung by the congregation instead of a trained choir. Hence, the Lutheran chorale was born.95 @ 500 was originally written for a trombone quartet. It was the second commission by students of my colleague and friend at Eastern Michigan University, trombone professor, Donald Babcock. They gave me carte blanche, so I took the opportunity to fulfill my wish to write a piece to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation. Later, as I began adapting this work for organ, I soon realized that it would become a unique work in its own right.

Manuscript of Trio No. 5 has been stored in the archives of Lithuanian Theater, Music and Film Museum together with the unfinished Prelude No. 6. It seems, that these were some pages from a larger lost collection of pieces. The manuscript of Trio No. 5 was discovered in 2019 by Lithuanian organist Paulius Grigonis. At present this is its first known publication. The name Trio is slightly inaccurate for this piece, because its right hand has two voices almost throughout (33 bars out of 44 bars), which is led by the left hand and pedals. As given in the original source, the present publication maintains the free migration between the written out two-voice-texture and intervals written as one voice (bars 7, 8, 23).Juozas Naujalis (1869–1934) – Lithuanian composer and organist. In 2006, I was asked to introduce the hymn Blessed Jesus, at Thy Word (Liebster Jesu) at an American Guild of Organists festival of German hymn tunes. I composed this quiet setting of the famous German hymn tune in an homage to Franz Liszt's organ treatment of the Jacob von Arcadelt setting of the Ave Maria (1862, S.659). I hope I have captured the spirit of Liszt's piece and given it new life in this setting. This chorale prelude is appropriate for any worship service and for wedding prelude music as well.

Taking into account the date of publication (1897) these seem to be the first printed organ compositions of Naujalis. They were published in Warsaw, in the collection Preludia na organy, part 2, series III. The publication soon received positive comments in the Polish newspaper of the St. Cecilia Society, Musica sacra (1898 No. 5). There are many signs that Naujalis used this edition as his favourite teaching manual since the fingerings and pedaling given are from the author himself.Juozas Naujalis (1869–1934) – Lithuanian composer and organist. In 1892, he was appointed organist and choir leader at the Kaunas Cathedral, a position he held until his death. Naujalis became actively involved in organizing local musical societies and institutions. As an outcome of his groundbreaking work, a number of important private entities, such as the first boys’ choir in Lithuania based at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas, courses and the school for organists (1911), the first legal Lithuanian bookshop and music publishing house in Kaunas (1905–1912), the first music magazine Vargonininkas (The Organist) and calendars for organists published in Lithuanian (1909–1910), and the music school in Kaunas (1919), have been launched. In 1908, he founded the Children Society and St. Gregory Society for Organists, which was later reorganised into St. Cecilia Society for church musicians (1924). Naujalis was also the first Lithuanian composer to achieve recognition abroad. His church music was published in Regensburg, Warsaw, St. Petersburg, Leipzig and Paris. In recognition of his merits in the field of church music he was made Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy in Rome, in 1929.A total of 29 organ pieces by Naujalis were recorded at the Archcathedral Basilica in Kaunas in 2019.
