American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists. Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City. Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

Published by Dominic Stichbury (A0.1380273). This beautiful and tender song was written by Kate Bush specifically for the film ‘She’s Having A Baby’. Bush puts herself in the shoes of a man waiting outside the delivery room as his wife gives birth. The song explores his vulnerability at this tense moment. This SSSAA arrangement plays with the form of the original song, whilst incorporating all the themes and hooks that we know from Bush's version. It offers a variety of different textures throughout, handing the melody around and moving between a free chorale-like opening to a steady pulse for the bulk of the arrangement. There is an additional descant soprano part on the top stave, which could be sung by a soloist or a small group. The key bars for this part are 12-15 & 26-28 , where we hear the iconic opening motif. The other passages of this descant can be omitted as necessary depending on the ensemble's skill level. This was arranged especially for Chaps Choir's 10 year celebration concert in 2023. Its lyrics portray a woman fighting to maintain her pride in a neglectful, if not outright abusive, relationship, although it remains, at this stage, still essentially masochistic. She berates, but - in the lyrics at least - does not challenge. The iconic performances from the late 1960s (Erma Franklin, Janis Joplin, Dusty Springfield), though, tell a different story. Anger is erupting into the voices: the personal is poised to become overtly political.The arrangement sets the narrative verses in a melody-and-accompaniment texture, with the harmony parts largely on vocables to let the story through, then builds up to a primarily homophonic texture with everyone participating in the lyrics for the declarative mode of the choruses. The song tells a story of a hard-working blue-collar woman, based on inspiration Summer found after the 25th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony (23 Feb 1983) when she attended an after-party. She encountered a restroom attendant named Onetta Johnson (whose name is mentioned in the song) whom she found sound asleep - despite a blaring TV - exhausted from working long hours. Summer related the story in an interview: I looked at her and my heart just filled up with compassion for this lady, and I thought to myself: God, she works hard for the money, cooped up in this stinky little room all night. Then I thought about it, and I said, She works hard for the money... She works hard for the money...This is it! This is it! I know this is it! The arrangement opens with an a cappella introduction in full harmony. The melody moves between the altos and sopranos, with each part otherwise providing rhythmic support (echoing the instrumental accompaniment). The sopranos divide into 3 parts occasionally, allowing some high voices (A-flat) to shine. There are no solos in this arrangement -- your women all have opportunity to sing this powerful, true story that serves more broadly as an allegory for women's rights and socioeconomic hardship.
