This easy-to-rehearse, highly singable anthem is ideal for recognizing the beginning of or transition to a new ministry, or acknowledging God's goodness and providence in times of trial or need.Be Strong and of Good Courage is based on King David's words as he announced to his son, Solomon, that the task of building the house for the ark of the covenant would be his: “Be strong and of good courage, and do it; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God, my God, will be with thee. He will not leave thee nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord. (I Chronicles 28:20). In addition, it includes a complementary passage, paraphrased, from the prophet Isaiah: Fear not, for he is with thee; be not dismayed, for he is thy God. He will strengthen thee, he will help thee; he will uphold thee with his righteous right hand. Sunset: St. Louis for SSA choir and piano was written at the suggestion of a conductor I met at the 2013 American Choral Directors’ Association national conference in Dallas, TX. He lamented the lack of new music for SSA choir that kept the voices within a restricted range yet wasn’t simplistic, and also didn’t use a restricitve number of accompanying instruments; throughout the week his sentiment was echoed by countless other conductors who I had the pleasure of spending time with. At that point, I also had no music for treble/women’s choir in my catalog, so this piece is not only an attempt to fill in this hole in the repertoire, but also an attempt to fill in the hole in my own choral output. The piece opens with a short passage for solo piano evocative of late afternoon light on water which leads into the voices’ hazy entrance of close diatonic harmonies and loose, liquid rhythms. After this soft opening, the piano begins a gently undulating, water-like accompaniment that – like the Mississippi – flows by, bringing harmonic shifts and swells. The words Dream by the river captured my imagination, conjuring images of the city drifting to sleep as the sun sets, so I couldn’t resist making the single word Dream into a refrain, weaving it into the larger structure of the poem, which makes the piece not only a love song to the city, but also a lullaby. The vocal parts have a compressed range: Soprano 1 has a few unsustained Gs, and the Alto line never drops below B-flat. There are some minor challenges with rhythm and pitch (hemiolas, tuplets, and some harmonic cross-relations with the piano), but all are navigable. The piece was written and prepared for publication in a compositional frenzy between 1pm on March 30, 2013 and 7pm on March 31, 2013 in Montauk, NY.Duration: ca. 4 min. Sentimental but not sappy, simple but not simplistic; easily singable in two parts with a few three part notes added in for singers with lower voices where needed. Two lyrical melodic sections (into AABAB coda) are shared between the parts supported by a stunning piano accompaniment featuring bell-like echoes and rich harmonies. The message of Christmas Is... is timeless - hope, joy, love and peace. On a personal note, the images evoked by the text are memories of my own childhood in wintry Canada where Christmas was made magical not by things (because no one had much) but by kind friends, seasonal sights and sounds, and simply being and sharing together.

This trial of experience usually goes against our expectations of what we thought would be our ideal. Even when we achieve our ideal we find that there is trial involved. Nature is used to reflect the purity of reality without blurring the pure intent of the piece with the frailty of humanity. Morning represents the newness of transition. The quill represents the creativity of the transition and exciting new possibilities. Sometimes we see this morning with eyes of too much expectation, without full understanding, there is always a secret that this portrait of creation holds. Our expectations often make the portrait dull because we don’t anticipate or appreciate what makes life beautiful. But we have a choice to see the picture for what it is and it is still beautiful amidst the imperfect brush strokes of a mornings quill.

Terry published in 1833 and the contemporary version for 8-part choir by Stephen Cleobury in the OUP's Carols for Choirs series. (A history of the carol can be found in the New Oxford Book of Carols, edited by H Keyte and A Parrott, p.462f.) The version presented here is kept relatively simple to perform, being scored only for a three-part choir (SABar - soprano, alto, baritone) and piano, but with plenty of interest including changes in voicing, changes of rhythm (especially verse 6) and two key changes. The arranger hopes performers and listeners will find it energetic and fun! It should certainly be sung in that spirit! Although often associated with Christmas, it could in fact be performed in any season, including Easter, referring as it does to the whole life, death and resurrection of Christ.

The film became and over-night sensation and received several awards and nominations, including two Academy Awards for Best Original Song (Fame) and Best Original Score, as well as a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.The song Fame was written as the film's theme piece by Michael Gore (music) and Dean Pitchford (lyrics). It was performed in the film by Irene Cara. Fame reached number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 in August 1980. It spent three weeks at number one in the UK and also reached number one in Ireland, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
