The arranger has adapted the music for 20-instruments chamber orchestra. Throughout the suite there are sections that call for improvisation and interpretation from the performers. These moments are designed to allow musicians the freedom to infuse their artistic expression in the arrangement. For those encountering unfamilar notation, detailed explanations and insights are provided below to understanding the score. Published by Stephen J Rumbold (A0.941242). This is an adaptation of The Canadian Brass's famous arrangement for Horn Octet or Horn Choir with parts for optional bass guitar/tuba and drum set. Legend has it that their arranger, Luther Henderson, originally created it for a Royal Command Performance before Queen Elizabeth. In the preparation for the performance, The Canadian Brass was given a list of some of the Queen's favorite musical titles, and both When The Saints Go Marching in and Handel's Hallelujah Chorus were on that list - and the rest is history! The arrangement has parts for optional tuba/bass guitar and drum set, but plays well with just Horn Octet or Horn Choir. And, a tip 'o the hat to Herr Strauss for lending us a lustige streiche at measure 65. Chord symbols are included in some of the parts for those who might want to play some Dixie-style improvisation.

Au Moment… is for improviser(s) and chamber orchestra and was a commissioned from Gérard and Nicole Gouye for the multi-instrumental Resonance Duo. The work is dedicated to the conductor, Paul Méfano. The duration is about 20'. The part of the improviser(s) is entirely improvised while the orchestra plays from a written score which includes an open architecture that can be altered to create a different performing and listening experience each time. Any instrument may be used by the soloist(s). For the premiere of this piece, Resonance Duo played the following instruments: Drake Mabry – oboe with a small miniature saxophone mouthpiece, a wooden soprano saxophone and soprano to contrabass bamboo clarinets. Catherine Schneider played piano both on the keyboard and inside along with percussion instruments from Africa and the Middle East. Any instrument may be used by the soloist(s). For the premiere of this piece, Resonance Duo played the following instruments: Drake Mabry – oboe with a small miniature saxophone mouthpiece, a wooden soprano saxophone and soprano to contrabass bamboo clarinets. Catherine Schneider played piano both on the keyboard and inside along with percussion instruments from Africa and the Middle East. Shaw’s solos as played in both the motion picture and record version are represented in great detail with the film solo shown as ossia so the player can view and choose which they might prefer to play. Techniques are carefully detailed to show ornaments, slurs, accents etc. This edition restores many elements missing in other versions available. The strings here are restored to the original voicings so important to the style of the classic sound of the period.The solos are transcribed note for note as played by greats such as Billy Butterfield on Trumpet, Johnny Guarnieri on Piano, Les Robinson on Alto Sax, Jerry Jerome on Tenor Sax, Vernon “Brownie” Brown on Trombone.There is an entire sax riff that was extemporaneously improvised during the session that is missing entirely in other published versions. The instrumentation is also restored to only the instruments that were used in Shaw’s recordings. There are many details that help the ease of performability of the genre and gesture of jazz idiom.
