Tango d?Elinora is an exciting original composition by David McKeown, arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Cello.
This duet is written in the style of early twentieth century Tango music. Tango first appeared as in the late nineteenth century in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but it wasn?t long before the dance craze spread to North America and Europe. Performers like Carlos Gardel were the international superstars of their day. More recently the Nuevo Tango of Astor Piazzolla and others has pushed the boundaries and ensured that Tango is still a vibrant art form today.
If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated with the first beat in the bar always strong; the melody should always flow and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576676). The tune of Aura Lea was originally composed by Englishman George R. Poulton (1828–1867) who migrated to the USA. It has undergone many versions in the past 150 years, including the original Civil War song to words by W. W. Fosdick, subtitled Maid with golden hair, Nora Lee, various glee club arrangements and, eventually, Elvis Presley's Love me Tender. The rhythms here switch from swing-like triplets to plain classical and back and various instruments have a few cheeky side comments from time to time, including chromatics and a development going into more modern-romantic harmonies. The sound sample is an electronic preview. The pdf contains score and parts. A simpler arrangement for choir is also available on this site under the title Nora Lee.
