I originaly wrote this march for Brass Band. It's called 'Setting the Watch' and is inspierd by the Ripon Hornblower with the tradition going back over a thousand years to Saxon times when Viking raids were common occurrences and people lived in fear of their property, livestock and even lives being lost in night-time attacks. In 886, the English King was Alfred the Great and he made it his mission to visit his people bringing a message of safety and stability. In Ripon he granted the people a Royal Charter and gave them a symbolic horn as a gift, advising them that they should be always alert to the dangers of invaders. The people of Ripon decided to employ a night watchman that they called a “wakemen†to patrol from dusk until dawn ready to sound the horn gifted by the King should he spot any trouble approaching. For further reassurance, the wakeman sounded the horn at each of the four corners of the market place at 9pm every night to let the people know that he was on duty and they could sleep easily. This sounding of the horn at 9pm became known as setting the watch.

Text is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I LXXXIII lines 3362-3364:  “Thus I saw and understode that our feith is oure light in our night, which light is God, our endless day.†The soundtrack of night sounds changing to dawn reflects the message of hope in Julian’s text. Beginning with the sounds of dusk, the whispered words blend with insect sounds. The modal aleatoric passages create an atmosphere of echoing bells as voices overlap. As night passes into day, the modality changes and the insect night sounds shift to the dawn chorus of birds. Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. When Julian was near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†Her beautiful Medieval English words reassure us with the hope that our faith in God is our light in times of trouble. This piece won second prize in the 2018 NATS Art Song Composition Competition.This song cycle is, in part, a meditation on what it means to be a mortal being who exists in time. The first and last movements each present a different take on looking back, and the cycle moves backward in time from evening to mid-day to dawn. Images from each poem are woven into the music; the first movement is full of sewing imagery, so in places the pianist imitates the ebb and flow of a sewing machine's ostinato. In essence “Horizons†aims to create that picture in the listener mind through music. Horizons is a tone poem that seeks to encapsulate the breathtaking nature found in Atlantic Canada. Drawing its inspiration from the lush Acadian forest,  majestic Fundy National Park, and the diverse geographical landscapes that define Atlantic Canada, this piece vividly translates the essence of these natural wonders into sound. The composition is divided into two movements, Sunrise and Sunset, each crafted to convey the unique ambiance and colors of the Atlantic horizon at these times of the day.In Horizons, orchestral textures are pivotal in painting the auditory landscape. The intricate layering of instrumental timbres and dynamics is akin to the interplay of light and shadow across the landscape. The delicate whispers of the woodwinds evoke the gentle rustle of leaves in the Acadian forest at dawn, while the bold, resonant brass mirrors the dramatic hues that streak the sky at dusk. Strings weave throughout, like the constant ebb and flow of the tides at Fundy Bay. Through Horizons, listeners are invited to embark on an auditory journey that mirrors the experience of witnessing a sunrise and sunset on the Atlantic horizon. The orchestral textures serve as dynamic and integral components of the narrative, bringing to life the serene beauty and the vibrant tapestry of Atlantic Canada's natural landscapes through music.
