Each of these three miniatures for solo piano is approximately 1 minute in duration. They may be played separately or as a group. Chimera was written in 2016 for pianist Stephen Porter in response to his call for scores for a 15-Minutes-of-Fame program on the theme of Re-Imagining Beethoven. The piece is a riff on Beethoven's famous Für Elise. Radiant Jewel was composed in 2015 and is dedicate to the composer’s niece, Loïe Ann Gilbert. Composed in 2014, Seabiscuit’s Run is an homage to the champion racehorse. A small horse, Seabiscuit had an inauspicious start to his racing career, but became an unlikely champion and a symbol of hope to many Americans during the Great Depression. His career culminated in the 1938 Match of the Century against War Admiral at Pimlico Race Course. War Admiral was the favorite but Seabiscuit won by four lengths, and Seabiscuit was named American Horse of the Year for 1938.

Composed in 2014, SEABISCUIT'S RUN is an homage to the champion racehorse. This one-minute piece is dedicated to Mexican pianist Joel Juan Qui, who will give the premiere performance in 2015. A small horse, Seabiscuit had an inauspicious start to his racing career, but became an unlikely champion and a symbol of hope to many Americans during the Great Depression. He didn't run the leave-'em-in-the-dust races of other famous horses, but liked to intimidate and tease his opponents by looking them in the eye and then finally leaving them behind. He never quit, in spite of his small size, odd gait, and serious injury. Seabiscuit's career culminated in the 1938 Match of the Century against War Admiral at Pimlico Race Course. War Admiral was the favorite but Seabiscuit won by four lengths, and Seabiscuit was named American Horse of the Year for 1938. According to some, he got more press in 1938 than Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill combined. A 2015 Piano Contest feature.

THE PARTING BEFORE THE BATTLE was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) an Irish writer, poet and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. He is best remembered for the lyrics of The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer and one of the first recognized champions of freedom in Ireland. As an impressionable young man with a quick Irish temper, the execution of a close college friend during the United Irishmen's Rebellion aroused in Moore a patriotic fervor that provided his greatest literary inspiration. Thomas Moore's best known work included a brilliant biographical masterpiece taken from the confidential memoirs of Lord Byron. His own Memoirs, Journal, and Correspondence are an invaluable social record of life in England and Ireland during the first half of the nineteenth century. James W. Knox, composer, depicts a battle of the brave Irish men and women who have courageously fought against those who seek destruction. The chorus should sing with great boldness and display a sense of honorable pride. To create a dramatic affect, James also used Erse or Gaelic with an ancient proverb, Nà neart go cur le chéile. (There is no strength without unity.) This text is used throughout the piece in addition to the poem. The proverb is set to the melody of Dies irae , which is a famous Gregorian chant dating back to the 13th century and is found as part of the Latin sequence in the Requiem. .
