Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1027894 Composed by William Elsom. Contemporary. Score and parts. 46 pages. Will Elsom #3053855. Published by Will Elsom (A0.1027894). Programme Notes Boudicca became the Queen of the Iceni upon the death of her husband, Prasutagus. The Iceni had lived in relative peace with the Romans, with Prasutagus living as a client king, paying tribute to Rome. The Romans refused to accept a woman as the ruler, and sought to assume total control. To demonstrate its superiority, a Roman Legion attacked the Iceni, captured Boudicca and made her watch as her daughters were raped. She sought revenge, allying the Iceni with the Trinovantes under her command, and wreaked havoc, destroying many Roman settlements. Boudicca was only stopped when Rome sent one of the best generals of the time, Seutonius Paulinus. Seutonius has been depicted offering Boudicca surrender with honour and her life, but when she rejected this, his tactical acumen proved superior, and all the Iceni and Trinovantes were wiped out. 1 – Boudicca Unites the Tribes The piece opens with the initial statement of Boudicca’s theme. Figure 3 depicts Boudicca’s reign as the leader of the Iceni, interspersed with a sadder theme depicting her lonely widowhood. Figure 4 sees the tribes called together with a drinking song and Figure 5 is the war cry, as Boudicca gives a rousing speech, first to her own warriors then to the Trinovantes. The second time bar before Figure 7 sees the tribes fall into a restless sleep. Amid early morning mists, Figure 7 sees restless horses, with distant fanfares heard, signalling the coming of the Romans. The Romans main theme is at Figure 8, with a constant fanfare over the top, signalling the confidence of the leaders. Figure 10 sees the Iceni and Trinovantes coming slowly out of hiding, and Boudicca’s theme growing in volume until the death chords signify the tribes have prevailed. 2. The Bards Sing The tribes sing a hymn to an unnamed Pagan God. At Figure 13, the Euphonium develops Boudicca’s theme depicting Taranis, the Bard of the Iceni, singing wistfully of happier times. He then makes an impassioned speech for peace, before cutting off in mid sentence. He then sits quietly (Figure 16) fearing the future. Figure 17 gives a euphoric and hopeful rendition of the hymn, as if Taranis has not been heard. 3 – Epping NB: It is my piece, and I say Epping is as credible as anywhere as the site of the final battle, and will not enter into any correspondence on the matter! A fanfare awakens the two tribes. Figure 18 sees the tribes prepare for a final battle, and the repeated section depicts two victories at Verulanium (St Albans) and Londinium (London – then a small barracks). At Figure 20 Taranis has a vision, and tries to change Boudicca’s mind about another attack. Boudicca listens to him, but tells him the die is cast, and there is no going back. Death or Glory… The war cry ensues at Figure 21, but at Figure 22 it is the Romans’ theme heard, and the death chords (Figure 24) signify that it is the two tribes that are being slaughtered this time. Brave souls (Repiano and Flugel at 24) fight on in vain to allow Boudicca to escape. At Figure 25 Boudicca prays, but realising all is lost, at Figure 26 drinks poison. As she dies, the last thing this brave British heroine hears is the sound of the Roman’s theme, signifying Seutonius’ total victory. William Elsom, December 2004

Instrumental Duet Instrumental Duet,Timpani,Trumpet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.977351 Composed by Friedrich Silcher, Hill/Hill, and Trad. Arranged by Des McNutty. Concert,Folk,Holiday,Latin. Score and parts. 24 pages. Des Press #6437339. Published by Des Press (A0.977351). Happy Birthday EdMuss i DennLa CucarachaAt last: Some new repertoire for the historical natural trumpet! This one-handed instrument was familiar to composers such as JS Bach, Handel, Telemann, Purcell, Vivaldi etc., but was largely neglected after the invention of valves in the early 19th century - and the subsequent invention of the nodal vent-hole systems in the late 20th-century - until recently, when the elusive lost art of clarino playing (in the fourth octave and above) was cracked by dedicated optimists such as Don L Smithers and JF Madeuf. These arrangements are a stylistic departure from the trumpet's golden age of Baroque repertoire, featuring works well known in the 20th century, and provide excellent training for rhythmic precision, style, pitching and team playing. They're also fun, if you like that sort of thing. Advice on tuning up the differently-pitched instruments and a technical tip are included. The current regulations on SMP mean us little guys can only publish in-copyright works one at a time. So, you can collect them all and make yourself a tome! This arrangement of Happy Birthday was written in 2011 for Edward H Tarr's 75th birthday concert in Basel (CH). Ed conducted many pieces from the Charamela Real, mostly for trumpets in two different tonalities. Happy Birthday was slipped in the programme before the second encore without his knowledge. At his downbeat, he got quite a surprise. The rest of these arrangements were originally written for Lunchtime Tower Music (weather permitting), at the Dartington International Summer School between roughly 2000 and 2010, for courses led by Michael Laird and David Staff. Such performances from the mediæval clock tower involved the various brass and other wind classes playing seriously with an informal atmosphere. Logistical issues, a narrow staircase and the ubiquitous Health-and-Safety regulations prevented the use of timpani on the tower but sometimes larger groups, and those involving vertigo sufferers, played in the courtyard instead. These pieces are the opposite of playing Baroque music on modern, or postmodern instruments. Get them all now and enjoy a refreshing change! Enjoy! DM

Instrumental Duet Guitar,Instrumental Duet,Mandolin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1017672 Composed by Turlough Ó Carolan. Arranged by Gordon Jackson. Baroque,Celtic,Classical,Folk,Irish,Multicultural,World. Score and parts. 2 pages. Gordon Jackson #6434379. Published by Gordon Jackson (A0.1017672). 174Turlough Ó Carolan (1670-1738) was an Irish harper and composer. Carolan’s music does not sit comfortably in any one particular musical tradition. He was the product of a long line of Irish harpers dating from medieval times or before. He was also aware of Irish folk music, with many of his tunes having a ‘trad’ quality, particularly in his jig-like compositions. Finally, Carolan was influenced by the music of Italian Baroque composers that he would have heard played at the great houses he visited. Carolan’s Draught is an example of the latter. The rather prosaically titled ‘174’ is simply the result of the air’s original name being lost in the mists of time, and Donal O’Sullivan, in his Carolan: The Life Times and Music of an Irish Harper [sic.] allocated numbers to the tunes that had no titles (171-180). I have arranged this primarily for solo mandolin, although I’m sure it can be adapted for other instruments. The piece is played three times through: first, the basic unadorned melody; second, with just a few simple double stops and open strings; third, a fully-realised romp with many, often quite tricky, double stops (and open strings, of course, but they’re pretty easy!). I’ve added guitar chords above the staff (letter names only), not that it necessarily needs further accompaniment. The melody is so heavily arpeggiated the chords more or less wrote themselves. A word of warning – easily discovered for yourselves, really – beware of attempting to play this too fast lest those runs of quavers (16th notes) catch you unawares!

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1295707 Composed by Donald Ashwander. Ragtime. Score. 6 pages. The Donald Ashwander Estate #886005. Published by The Donald Ashwander Estate (A0.1295707). Forgotten Ballrooms, pays tribute to the burgeoning preservation movement in America that has breathed new life into abandoned and historically significant structures. In the not-so-distant past, only a select few possessed the sophistication to recognize the beauty and historical significance of seemingly ordinary places such as derelict railway depots or 1920s filling stations. Today, however, there are people discovering, restoring, and utilizing these architectural gems. This newfound reverence for the past has given rise to a unique breed of enthusiasts who engage in what can only be described as ballroom archaeology.Forgotten Ballrooms takes inspiration from this rarefied and dedicated movement of ballroom archaeologists. Throughout the country, these individuals venture into the hidden corners of history, opening doors to ghostly rooms that resonate with the echoes of bygone dramas and memories long past. As the pianist embarks on this musical journey, they evoke the palpable atmospheres of these once-vibrant spaces, now shrouded in the mists of time. The composition’s syncopated rhythms, playful melodies, and intricate harmonies pay homage to the era when these ballrooms were the centers of social life and entertainment. Yet, there is an underlying sense of nostalgia and longing, as if the music itself yearns to recapture the forgotten stories and dances of the past.Through Ashwander’s musical tribute, we are reminded of the enduring power of history, culture, and the resolute spirit of those who seek to preserve the memories and grandeur of America's forgotten ballrooms. The final page of the sheet music contains special program notes by Donald Ashwander.

SATB choir and string quartet - Medium - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8559-E Composed by Frank Ferko. Secular, 21st Century, Creation/Nature, Spring. Score & instrument part. 10 pages. Duration 2 minutes, 40 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8559-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8559-E). UPC: 600313485596. English. The Seasons was commissioned by the South Bend Chamber Singers, Nancy Menk, conductor, and first performed on March 3, 2013 by the South Bend Chamber Singers with the Euclid Quartet in a concert devoted to music about the weather. The texts for this work were selected by the composer, and they represent three different time periods, the 17th, 19th and early 20th centuries, to show that writers have long been fascinated by the seasons and by the distinct weather conditions that each season brings. Although certain types of weather, such as wind or rain, may occur in any of the seasons, the descriptions of weather in these four poems present specific weather conditions which commonly occur in each of the four seasons: a still, hot, sultry day interrupted by the movement of a light breeze from the hills (summer); the cooling morning mists and light frost which signal the coming of winter (autumn); the bitter iciness of fierce winds and frozen air-in this poem, further compared with man's ingratitude (winter); the warm rains and southerly winds that melt the ice and bring about new life (spring). Throughout this piece various musical devices are employed to underscore or even interpret the words. These devices include text painting, contrapuntal structures (double canon and fugue), and dramatically shifting harmonic colors as each season unfolds. The contrasting performing forces of mixed choir and string quartet are particularly well-suited for presenting, very colorfully, the various musical depictions of the weather conditions and characteristics of each of the seasons. -Frank FerkoDuration: 2:40.

Alexander Porfiryevich Borodin (Russian: ÐлекÑаÌндр ПорфиÌрьевич БородиÌн, IPA: [Élʲɪkˈsandr pÉrˈfʲi rʲjɪvʲɪtÉ• bÉ™rÉˈdʲin] (12 November 1833 – 27 February 1887) was a Russian chemist and Romantic musical composer ofGeorgian ancestry. He was one of the prominent 19th-century composers known as The Mighty Handful, a group dedicated to producing a uniquely Russian kind of classical music, rather than imitating earlier Western European models.[3][4][5]Borodin is known best for his symphonies, his two string quartets, the symphonic poem In the Steppes of Central Asia and his opera Prince Igor. Music fromPrince Igor and his string quartets was later adapted for the US musical Kismet. A doctor and chemist by profession, Borodin made important early contributions to organic chemistry. Although he is presently known better as a composer, during his lifetime, he regarded medicine and science as his primary occupations, only practising music and composition in his spare time or when he was ill. As a chemist, Borodin is known best for his work concerning organic synthesis, including being among the first chemists to demonstrate nucleophilic substitution, as well as being the co-discoverer of the aldol reaction. Borodin was a promoter of education in Russia and founded the School of Medicine for Women in Saint Petersburg, where he taught until 1885. Taken from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Borodin

Published by Derek Larson (A0.1011390). This is one of my favorite texts and compositions to date. The rich text evokes a man wandering the mists as he yearns for his distant love. At times depicting the night, the shifting fog, or the eventual appearance of the bright stars, the music presses onward and upward to a brilliant climax and peaceful resolution. The parts are very singable but they explore the full range of each voice and there is one chord that contains a 16-part split. Choirs will love to sing this and it is sure to be a choir and audience favorite.

An arrangement of the Faroese National Anthem for Piano.Tú alfagra land mítt (Thou fairest land of mine), officially Mítt alfagra land (My fairest land), is the national anthem of the Faroe Islands. It was written in 1906 by headteacher Símun av Skarði, and the melody was composed in 1907 by violinist Petur Alberg. The song was written in a work dated 1 February 1906 by Símun av Skarði, the headmaster of a high school in Føgrulið, southwest of Klaksvík. It was written during a time of strong division in the Faroe Islands between conservatives who wanted to preserve Danish rule and autonomists who wanted more self-government, of which Símun was the latter.Violinist Petur Alberg wrote the first notes of the music of the anthem on 4 September 1907, after the melody came to him that evening. He later sang the melody down the phone in the Løgting to Símun av Skarði, who liked it. Petur then sent it to a music teacher he knew in Akureyri, Iceland, and to asked him to harmonise it for a male quartet. In October 1907, the male quartet arrangement arrived, and singers began to practice it for a Boxing Day concert in Sloan's Hall in Tórshavn. Petur, not daring to reveal the song's author, told the singers the song was Icelandic, by a certain Jón Sveinsson. However, the singers liked the song. The song was performed at the concert on 26 December 1907, which was the first time any song by Petur had been performed publicly and the first time Tú alfagra land mítt was performed publicly. On 8 January 1908, Tú alfagra land mítt was published in the Faroese newspaper Tingakrossur. It was then published in the Lesibók, a literary history in chronological order, in 1911. It was later published in many editions of the Songbók Føroya fólks (Faroese People's Songbook), generally in the number one position, from 1913 through 1959.In 1925, a Nynorsk translation of the song by Rolf Hjort Schøgen was published in the Tingakrossur. In 1928, a Danish translation by university student Tormod Jørgensen was published in Højskolebladet No. 7928.[1][2] An Icelandic translation by Jochum M. Eggertsson appeared in the magazine Dvöl in 1935. The same year, a German translation by Ernst Krenn was published in the Føroyaheftið (Faroese Instalment), a Faroese booklet at the Nordic Society in Vienna, Austria. In 1943, an English translation by Padre G. C. C. Knowleson was featured in the notes of the magazine The Pioneer by some British soldiers in the Faroe Islands during World War II. As the national anthem Tú alfagra land mítt won out in a rivalry with Eg oyggjar veit (I know some islands), from 1877, on which song should become the national anthem of the Faroe Islands. Tú alfagra land mítt has been sung at all festivals in the Faroe Islands, and it has been in the psalm book of the Faroese Church since 1990. The national radio station Útvarp Føroya, established in 1957, played it every night before ending its broadcast for the evening.
