An Orchestral Fanfare, written for the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Perth. 2 Flutes (2nd doubling Piccolo), 2 Oboes, 2 Bb Clarinet, 2 Bassoon, 4 French Horns, 2 Trumpets in Bb, 2 Trombones, 1 Tuba, 4 Percussion (Timpani, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Cymbals), Harp, StringsComposer's notes:2022 was a year that sparked inspiration for me. I am not talking about just one spark either, but a series that beautifully led me to the creation of my piece. After seeing the 2022 MetSO program it was evident that it lightly using the Brass players, and I knew they were feeling a bit underutilised. Which sparked the first idea in my mind to write a piece that would take full advantage of their skills, and heavily use brass instruments. The program coincided with the 45th Anniversay of the Orchestra which started it life as the Karrinyup Symphony Orchestra. Rekindling the orchestra’s relationship with the City of Stirling and returning to the City of Stirling as a rehearsal venue in 2023, was another spark of inspiration which led me towards the piece’s naming… the ‘Karrinyup Fanfare’. The last spark of inspiration was a query inside my mind. The opening of the piece contrasts two somewhat conflicting meanings of the word Karrinyup. During an Aboriginal Studies unit, I discovered that Karrinyup is a Noongar word that translates to “the place where there are spidersâ€. However, this differs from the City of Stirling official meaning of the name Karrinyup on the website. It states the word means “the place where Kangaroos drinkâ€, possibly because it sounds much more pleasant and doesn’t inspire the fear that spiders often do. It was this contrary interpretation of the word ‘Karrinyup’ which provided the final spark of inspiration I needed for this composition. You see, when you listen to the opening, the theme jumps up and down through the horns, and represents the Kangaroo – Yongka. Whilst as the fanfare continues, you will notice the second theme – the crawling strings represent the spider – Kar. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. (felted piano sounds are produced by putting a piece of felt or cloth between the strings and the hammers.) Meraki (Greek) is when you put your soul into something you are doing. Meraki is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe what happens when you leave a piece of yourself (your soul, creativity, or love) in your work. When you love doing something, anything, so much that you put something of yourself into it. Meraki means to do something with passion, with absolute devotion, with undivided attention. Meraki is derived from the Turkish Merak (Labor of love, to do something with pleasure). Usually applied to tasks, usually, creative or artistic tasks, but can be applied to any task at all. Lumokinesis (4:00). Lumokinesis is the ability to manipulate and control the element light at will. Kenopsia (4:00). Kenopsia is the eerie atmosphere of a place usually full of peple, but now abandoned and calm. Ataraxia (4:30). Tranquility, imperturbability, absence of wishes or fears. Petricor (3:30). Petrichor is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. Exulansis (3:45). The tendency to stop talking of one's experiences because people cannot reate to them.

DUO is a conversation between two instruments that share many of the same functions within an ensemble, although they each have their own unique qualities that make them invaluable. As with many well-suited pairings of unique individuals, sometimes each member of the DUO speaks the same language but from a different perspective. This is represented musically in the second movement by an extended palindrome. At other times, each member flies right past the other without much consideration. Conversations often remain left open. Hopefully, for the sake of the DUO, frustrations and arguments (represented musically both with strings of monotonous chromaticism and long sighs through the instrument while the other is talking) resolve harmoniously, like in the three-pitch I Love You motive that closes the second movement.

I sort of did this intentionally to prove that perfectly stacked voicings do not work well on guitar. C E G Bb perfectly in order in harmony, sounds like it would be easy on guitar, but it is not.6. To make this more practical on guitar, I recommend building the chords yourself by simply knowing letter names well on guitar. The next time something asks for G major, don't just play a common voicing, actually find G B D randomly on the guitar neck. 7. Often the fifth of a chord is removed since it is the least important to invoking the flavor of the chord. This is especially true on guitar because we quickly run out of fingers and strings.8. The nature of the piano lends pianists to constantly seeing these distances on a linear plane. Conversely, guitar is a very murky instrument since the real distances of pitches is counterintuitive to arbitrary (usually) fret numbers! That is why many guitarists would benefit from thinking this way, instead of thinking of chords simply as shapes (which is also important for different reasons). In other words, try to build a chord on one string on guitar. It is impractical, but the half step distances required for chords will make much more sense.To Do:1. I improvised this gentle piece first for the Communion of the memorial service of Lithuanian journalist Rokas Zilinskas on June 10, 2017 at Vilnius University St John's church .hen I came back home and started to transcribe it to the Sibelius notation software from this video. Although the tempo is rather slow, the process was painstakingly difficult. So I decided to improvise it fresh, this time straight to the Sibelius.What came out was a shorter version (ca. 5 minutes of duration) gentle piece suitable for Communion or recital. I dedicate it to Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra, organist, improviser, composer, pedagogue, mentor, friend.The soft strings remind me of Angels flapping their wings. The dialogue between two flutes is like two Seraphims talking to each other in thought. The dark 16' and 8' chord combination give a glimpse of mysteries invisible above the clouds in the dusk.7 pages. PDF score. Intermediate level.Let me know if you'll enjoy playing it!
