The three pieces in Idaho Gems capture the spirit of this northwestern state. 'White Pine Waltz' begins with a delicate melody in 3/4 meter inspired by the majestic western white pine, Idaho's state tree. The piece builds to a climactic middle section featuring flowing arpeggios in both hands before subsiding into a restatement of the theme. The second piece, 'Craters of the Moon,' paints a picture of the volcanic landscapes found in the national preserve of the same name. A repetitive chromatic figure in the lower register is combined with dissonant intervals in the upper register to capture the eerie otherworldliness of the park's lava fields. In 'Snake River Rag,' chromatic passages wind their way across the keyboard, inspired by the Snake River's twisted path through the Idaho countryside. 'Western Gem' provides a dynamic conclusion to the suite. The piece makes full use of the keyboard with block chords and scalar passages in both hands, while a modulation in the middle section provides an additional musical challenge. / Piano

Once again, the text is written phonetically with the words viewed as instrumental sound. In Cantata mundi, the sound is more symphonic, with woodwind and brass added to the strings, percussion and recorder. The seven main Cantus movements incorporate ethnic percussion, and are interspersed with shorter chorales. Colorful Colorado provides a musical tour of this western state. The suite opens with 'Aspen Leaf Rag,' a buoyant ragtime number inspired by the colorful tree that covers many of Colorado's mountainsides. Technical challenges in this piece include a stride bass pattern in the left hand and heavy syncopation. 'Moonlight on the Slopes' is a lyrical piece that oscillates between 3/4 and 6/8 meter. Flowing arpeggios and a delicate melody evoke the serenity of a moonlit, snow-covered landscape. The suite concludes with 'Pike's Peak Boogie,' a loping boogie-woogie number that calls to mind the cowboys and pioneers who founded the city of Colorado Springs. This piece features an engaging combination of classic blues inflections and unexpected harmonies. / Piano

The titles can be presented on the programme as separate works but the Universal Band Collection can also be performed as a complete suite. From a didactic point of view it is a suitable work to teach musicians something about the structure in music. For this purpose not only the big structure but also the small structure was kept very clear. Western Girl : A girl from the west of the USA rides her horse across the prairie, dreaming of her future. The rough structure: introduction - theme in a blues scale - the same thing in a different instrumentation - finale. Just a ballad : A balladin pop style with a rough A-B-A form. First there is the introduction of the main theme (A), then follows a tenor melody in minor with a rhythmical reference to the main theme (B). Finally there is the main melody, performed tutti with a different rhythm in the drums (A'). Play the Game : An English saying meaning: play fairly. Playful music in up-tempo with a wink to China, where almost all games are manufactured nowadays. Once again an A-B-A structure here. San Diego : A Mexican fugitive enjoys his freedom in America but also remembers his place of birth with melancholy. A sad minor melody with a straight trendy beat appears twice. The second time it has a slightly different instrumentation, in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling. Final Dance : Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style, followed by a fast dance in rock style. Gustav Holst has earned a place among the most revered of late 19th and early 20th century composers and is best known for his enduring Orchestral suite The Planets.But before that great work, in his use of Englsh folksongs, Gnostic texts and these Vedic hymns, one can discern Holst's search for a compositional Voice beyond the constraints of the European canon in the early 1900's.Some see composition of the Vedic Hymns as a turning point in Holst's compositional life.The quality is not completely consistent, and Holst remained true to his Western musical inheritance for the most part in setting them, but as art songs they are deeply felt and moving to hear.The nine songs are scored for mezzo-Soprano or baritone Voice.The texts are taken from the Rigveda, one of the four sacred texts of Hinduism and the oldest religious text in the world.The first set of three comprises Ushas, Varuna and Maruts, or Dawn, Sky and Stormclouds respectively.The second includes Indra (God of Storm and Battle), Varuna II (the Waters) and Song of the Frogs.The third group moves into the human sphere with Vac (Speech), Creation and Faith. / Piano Et Voix

Winterberg's
extraordinary life was
written in two chapters,
one Czech and one German,
split right down the
middle by the experience
of the Shoah, which
Winterberg, unlike his
colleagues Ullmann,
Krása, Haas and Klein,
miraculously survived. In
1947, the Prague-born
composer moved to Munich,
where he worked for the
Bavarian Broadcasting
Corporation. As a student
of Alexander Zemlinsky
and Alois Hába, he
belongs both to the Czech
tradition following
Janácek and to the
circle of the Second
Viennese School. He saw
himself as a bridge
builder between Western
and Eastern culture. The
circumstances under which
Winterberg was able to
compose during the war
years are still unclear.
Although his “mixed
marriage” initially
saved him from
deportation, he had to
perform forced labour and
was eventually sent to
the Terezin ghetto in
January 1945. The Suite
for Violin and Piano was
composed in 1942, the
year in which both
Winterberg's mother and
his piano professor
Thérèse Wallerstein
were murdered by the
Nazis. Compared to the
violin sonata from 1936,
the Suite is much more
condensed, lasting less
than seven minutes. A
melody dominated by
chromatic turns and
expressionist harmony
lend the work its
melancholy character,
which gives way, however,
to an almost
irrepressible defiance in
the rhythmically
percussive last

The atmosphere
of the Wild West is
caught in a striking and
most imaginative way by
young composer Andreas
Schulte in this work.
A caravan of gold- and
fortuneseekers launch
themselves into a big
adventure and begin their
rush westward.
The first
movement desciribes these
first days of buoyancy
and optimism in a crisp
march.
Near the
campfire the pioneers
rest themselves, and the
music expresses feelings
of romance, nostalgia for
the past and hopes for
the future.
A wistful
melody very
characteristically
communicates these
feelings.
Relaxation
takes place in the third
movement which is a
musical characterization
of a rodeo and its
attendant
festivities.
It is
obvious that sometimes
something goes wrong and
this aspect can also be
heard.
Nevertheless,
the valiant rider wins in
the end.
With a
flashback to the
beginning, the journey is
completed musically, thus
giving the composition a
dignified finale.

of the Wild West is
caught in a striking and
most imaginative way by
young composer Andreas
Schulte in this work.
A caravan of gold- and
fortuneseekers launch
themselves into a big
adventure and begin their
rush westward.
The first
movement desciribes these
first days of buoyancy
and optimism in a crisp
march.
Near the
campfire the pioneers
rest themselves, and the
music expresses feelings
of romance, nostalgia for
the past and hopes for
the future.
A wistful
melody very
characteristically
communicates these
feelings.
Relaxation
takes place in the third
movement which is a
musical characterization
of a rodeo and its
attendant
festivities.
It is
obvious that sometimes
something goes wrong and
this aspect can also be
heard.
Nevertheless,
the valiant rider wins in
the end.
With a
flashback to the
beginning, the journey is
completed musically, thus
giving the composition a
dignified finale.
