For the Easy Concert Pieces series, the experienced piano teacher Monika Twelsiek compiled pleasant, easy piano pieces for beginners and published them in two volumes in progressive order. The third volume is in preparation.The two volumes are intended to complement a piano tutorial method and are particularly suitable for performance at auditions at music schools, for examinations and for competitions. They offer varied repertoire in a broad selection of pieces from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern eras.Volume 1 (ED 22547) can already be used by beginners, containing pieces in the five-note range and easy pieces spanning a single octave. Other criteria for selection are simple rhythms and very easy chords. Crossing the thumb underneath, playing several parts together and pedal use are not yet required.Volume 2 (ED 22548) contains pieces with an extended range of two octaves. Crossing the thumb under, pedal use, simple polyphony and three- or four-part chords all feature here, as do simple ornaments, cantabile playing and differentiating between melody and accompaniment. / Piano

Béla Bartók's series of piano pieces For Children, based on folk melodies, was written around the end of the first decade of the 20th century. The pieces were published shortly afterwards by the Hungarian publisher Károly Rozsnyai. That first publication was in four volumes, the first two containing a total of 42 pieces based on Hungarian folk tunes, the third and fourth containing 43 pieces based on Slovakian folk tunes.In 1943, whilst in the United States, Bartók prepared a revised version of the collection for the publishers Boosey and Hawkes. The revisions were minimal: two Hungarian and four Slovakian songs were eliminated, there were a few minor alterations incorporating new ideas, some of the pieces previously written with accidentals had key signatures added, a few pieces were rewritten with changed meters - some fingerings were added or changed.The composer prepared the revised 1943 edition by using copies of the first edition on which he marked minor changes - where the changes were more extensive, fresh manuscript was written and a new version engraved. However, much of the engraving of the first edition was preserved in the 1943 edition. Publication took place in 1946, after the composer's death - it is not known if he saw final proofs prior to printing.The revised edition was published in two volumes, which now have been published together as one volume for the first time. / Piano

When one
practises sight-reading
on one’s own it is
tempting to stop as
onegoes along, because
the desire to
play
the correct
notes is often given
priority at the expense
of the rhythm and
expression.
Music
without an organic pulse
will leave the player
with an unsatisfactory
feeling of stress and
failure, and
the
stream of thought
will not form part of a
natural flow. Good
sight-reading training is
therefore ensemble
playing,
where the
teacher supports the
pulse and rhythm.
In
many other publications
of four-handed duets the
secundo part is written
in two bass clefs, and
the primo part in
two
treble clefs.
Reading this untrained
combination of clefs,
along with the stressful
fact that the music has
never been
seen nor
heard before, can confuse
the pupil.
In volumes
1 and 2 the secundo part,
which is intended for the
pupil, is therefore
notated in a treble clef
and bass
clef, as
piano music for two hands
is usually notated. In
volume 3 the degree of
difficulty is more
varied, but in
most
of the pieces
improvisation is an
interposed element in the
primo part, being
therefore a good
challenge for the
pupil.
In the
improvisatory sections a
chord or a scale is
notated. These can form
the tonal starting point,
but here too
the
pupil is
encouraged to experiment
with, for example, the
shift between major and
minor thirds, and between
the high and
low
