7 European Salon Pieces. In the 19th Century nationalist themes came into fashion. Composers drew on songs and dances from their native lands, working them into paraphrased adaptations, pot pourri arrangements and sets of variations or incorporating folk elements from various cultures in their compositions. Flautist Wilhelm Popp (1828-1902), who wrote music for his instrument at every level of difficulty, also took up this popular trend. In this collection seven of his ?easily playable? compositions have been chosen with musical links to different European countries. Here again Popp shows his ability to distil the essence from musical styles and fashions of his time, setting lyrical and virtuoso passages so well for the instrument that their effectiveness far outweighs any difficulties. The popularity of his pieces for tuition purposes, school concerts or youth music competitions remains undiminished to this day. This edition is essentially based on the first printed versions of these pieces ? with just a small number of printing errors and inconsistencies corrected without comment.

Written for Flute and Piano by Guy-Claude Luypaerts this volume of De La Flûte is the third of a set of five. Guy-Claude Luypaerts is a French composer and flautist of the 20th century who won numerous composition prizes. His compositions are mainly for woodwind and include concerto works and various pieces for Flute Horn Organ and Trumpet among others.

This Suite was originally written for Flute (or Recorder) and Strings: it is here arranged for Flute and Piano edited by Louis Moyse. It stands out amongst Telemann's work for its cosmopolitan sampling of the various styles of music known to the composer. It contains a pair of French Menuets two Passepieds from Brittany a Polish Polonaise and an Air à l'italienne. For good measure Telemann throws in two quasi-illustrative movements describing Les plaisirs and a Réjouissance respectively. The Overture is perhaps the best-known part of the work and is remarkable for its almost processional feel and itreappears as the Conclusion at the suite's end. This diversity of styles and means fits well the template of a suite but the unifying intelligence behind all of them is definitely that of Telemann.

5 Selected Songs. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The only known chamber music by Gustav Mahler is a movement for piano quartet from his student days at the Conservatorium in Vienna (1875-1878). The present new arrangements by Ronald Kornfeil go some way to addressing this gap while they also enrich the repertoire with pieces that are very interesting and demanding in their own right. The composer's rich song output includes his Wunderhorn songs, the Songs of a Wayfarer, the Rückert songs, the Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) as well as movements from his symphonies and the Song of the Earth. This book includes a selection of pieces that best suit the sound of the flute while providing plenty of variety. The arrangements transform Mahler's songs from their original conception for voice and piano or orchestral accompaniment into a purely instrumental dialogue between two equally important instrumentalists. In most cases the colourful orchestral versions provide the starting point. The omission of the text also demands different compositional techniques to bring out the various effects between indulgent sweetness and grotesque irony.
