Which of us does not have them memories? Everyone sometimes remembers things from the past be they happy memories or not. Sometimes a scent may remind us of a particular place or a tune may bring back memories of a certain situation. John DeBee experienced something similar when he heard a song on the radio: he immediately picked up his pen and composed ‘Flashback’. It has become a piece that appeals to the ear which will provide both the musicians performing it and their audience with pleasant memories.

Commissioned by the Bishop Ireton Wind Ensemble this tone poem by internationally renowned composer Tom Duffy is a masterpiece of instrumental timbres. Arr. Wil Van Der Beek. Par FUCIK JULIUS. Julius Fucik (1872-1916) was born in Prague, Czech Republic. He studied under Antonin Dvorák and at a young age played in military bands and later became bandmaster, a profession he practiced in various cities with many bands. In 1913 he settled in Berlin where he started his own music publishing house. As a composer Fucik is known for his light entertaining music however he also wrote chamber music, songs, choral works, a mass, a requiem and an unfinished opera. Many of his works have fallen into oblivion but many of his marches such as Einzug der Gladiatoren, Regimentskinder and Florentiner Marsch are still often played. With the concert overture Marinarella, Fucik takes us toan imaginary seaside resort on a beautiful spring day. Marinarella, a girl of the sea, accompanies us on our stroll. Leisurely walking couples on the boulevard, the murmur of the sea, fragments of a waltz melody from a café and a concert band performing a promenade concert pass you by. The 'Admiral Spirit' is the pride of the Navy. The ship is at sea there is no wind the sun is shining. The crew are busy piloting the ship into port in prime condition. The admiral himself will inspect the vessel. The first movement (Allegro Con Spirito) gives musical expression to the majestic ship and its toiling crew. In the second movement (Andante) the ship sails into port. It has been polished and technically everything is in order. The admiral will be proud when he inspects the ship. Third movement (Allegro Molto): the captain and his crew are nervous (modulations) while working at the 'finishing touch'. The Navy Band is ready to receive the admiral !. Hemay be proud of his flagship. De bemanning van het marineschip Admiral Spirit is druk bezig om het schip in optimale conditie de haven binnen te loodsen de admiraal gaat namelijk het schip zelf inspecteren. In het eerste deel (Allegro con spirito) horen we een verklanking van het majestueuze schip en de zwoegende bemanning. Hoe beeldend zijn de emmertjes water welke overboord gaan (trombones). In het tweede deel (Andante) vaart het schip de haven binnen. Het schip is gepoetst en technisch is alles in orde. Derde deel (Allegro molto): De kapitein en zijn bemanning zijn nerveus (modulaties) en er wordt aan de finishing touch gewerkt. De Navy Band staat klaar om de admiraal te ontvangen! He was also famous for the ballet Coppelia from which arranger Wil van der Beek has transcribed the czardas for concert band. Characteristic of this work and the music of Delibes' in general are rhythmic alternating melodies. Another trademark of Delibes' work is the skilful choice of instrumentation a facet which this transcription honors thoroughly.The piece is a succession of the various themes the composer uses to work towards a brilliant climax.
