Farewell to philosophy. Par BRYARS GAVIN. I have a great fondness for the lower string instruments: I am a bass player, my mother is a cellist, as are both my daughters; my own ensemble includes two violas, a cello and a bass, and for the instrumentation of my opera Medea I omit the entire violin section from the orchestra. As I have written a number of works for solo instrument or voice with orchestra I welcomed the opportunity to write a concerto for cello and orchestra and especially one which focuses particularly on the instrument’s lyrical qualities. Although the piece is in one continuous movement, and the soloist is playing almost without a break, it nevertheless falls into distinct sections which are recognisable by a shift of tempo as well as by a change in the music’s character. One of the early ideas Julian Lloyd Webber and I discussed was that it might form a companion piece to one of the Haydn concertos. Given my friendship with some members of the English Chamber Orchestra and my awareness of their repertoire, this suggested a number of particular musical references. The subtitle to the work, for example, combines the subtitles of two idiosyncratic Haydn symphonies and I allude to them in different ways but chiefly through orchestration: for The Philosopher by including a section in the concerto where the orchestration resembles that of the symphony’s first movement (pairs of English and French horns, muted violins and unmuted lower strings); for The Farewell, by the progressive reduction in the orchestration towards the end. Indeed, apart from the orchestral tutti in the last few bars, the last pages of the score are virtually for string quartet. The subtitle also refers to my own background as a philosophy graduate... The piece was commissioned by Philips Classics for Julian Lloyd Webber and is dedicated to him. The first performance was given by Julian Lloyd Webber and the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by James Judd, 21 November 1995, Barbican Hall, London. Gavin Bryars/ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Orchestre

For Flexible Ensemble. World Music Ireland for ensemble gives young musicians the opportunity to familiarize themselves with music culture from Ireland. Hardly can a country Iook back on such a rich and continuous music tradition as Eire (as Ireland is called in Gaelic, which, aside from English, is still spoken by a large part of the population). Even though a large part of the music, as we know today, dates back to the 17th and 18th century, many melodies can be traced back to a far older origin. At the same time, there are common roots with Scotland, England and Wales which, today, are often grouped into the general category of Celtic and Gaelic music. A selection of pieces of fascinating and, at the same time, important styles of music from Ireland should further intensify the already present interest. Rhythms, styles, and instruments typical of a certain country are explained in short texts in English, French and German. The pieces are intended for modern ensemble instruction, in flexible instrumentation, and, thus, can be employed in a variety of ways. Aside from a play-along version, the CD also contains an ensemble version with instruments typical of the respective style of music. The parts are included on the CD as digital files to enable an easier and more flexible usage. Édition avec CD, 1st part in C (violin, flute, recorder, tin whistle)1st part in Bb (clarinet, trumpet)2nd part in C (violin, flute, recorder, tin whistle)2nd part in Bb (clarinet, trumpet)piano/harpbass-part (cello, bassoon, double bass, e-bass)percussion (drum, Bodhrán).The parts are included on the CD as digital files to enable an easier and more flexible usage./ Recueil / Ensemble Flexible

Wonderful for teaching Baroque style and bowing concepts, this piece features limited third position for the violins, cellos, and basses. Violas share in the thematic materials with string basses, mostly sharing the basso continuo line with cellos. Violino piccolo pitch notation - notated the way it sounds-Violin solo part sounds at pitch (F major).Includes original version of the Sinfonia BWV 1046a.Authoritative Urtext edition of Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.1 in F major BWV 1046.The six Brandenburg Concertos BWV 1046-1051 prized jewels of the world's musical heritage were written in 1721 during Bach’s appointment in Cöthen.Of the six works Bach originally wrote earlier versions of numbers 1 and 5 which differ not only with regard to articulation but also at times different tones different rhythms instrumentation and of course form. These Urtext publications [BA5201-BA 5206] taken from the New Bach Edition now give performers the possibility to play these earlier versions perhaps even along side the version known today. In the earlier version of Concerto No.1 (BWV 1046a) which according to the editor of the edition Heinrich Besseler seems to have been Bach’s favorite among the six there is no violino piccolo part to be found and the violin concerto-like 3rd movement as well as the Polonaise movement are also absent. In nearly every bar the articulation in one instrument or another differs from the later version; for example the 16th-note slurs in bars 1 and 2 of the horns are missing in the later score the oboe slurs and trills in m.12 are also not to be found. The later version has the cello seperated from the continuo which means that the 16ths in m.7 are not to be played by the Violone grosso.

12 Concertos For Violin, Strings And Basso Continuo. Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. Antonio Vivaldi's twelve concertos op. 4 known by the name of 'La Stravaganza” were first mentioned as a collection of 'Concerti a 4” in the 1711 Foreword of 'L'Estro Armonico” op. 3. Their publication had to wait until 1716, when Estienne Roger issued them in two volumes of six concertos each. However, unlike the original announcement, 'La Stravaganza” is more than a collection of concertos for solo violin with string accompaniment: in five of the concertos the soloist is joined by a second solo violin or even by a solo violoncello (Concerto No. 7). The many reprints of 'La Stravaganza” bear witness to its popularity and widespread dissemination well into the 1730s. Besides the surviving prints, there is a significant body of handwritten sources containing alternative versions for seven of the concertos. Some of these manuscripts stem from the music library of Johann Georg Pisendel. This edition of 'La Stravaganza” is not only the first scholarly-critical edition, it is also the only complete edition available. In addition to the twelve concertos handed down in the Roger edition, Bärenreiter offers an additional concerto in full score, piano reduction and parts contained in the 1728 print issued by the English publishers Walsh and Hare, as well as alternative versions (without viola) found in handwritten sources for Concertos No. 6 (Volume 1) and No. 11 (Volume 2)./ Répertoire / Violon, Cordes et Basse Continue

The genre of the violoncello concerto was born in 17th-century Italy. Thanks to the Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) there exists today not only a wealth of magnificent violin concertos but also quite a number of cello concertos to whose development he contributed considerably.More than two dozen of his concertos are dedicated to the violoncello including the probably most famous double concerto: the 'Concerto for Two Violoncellos String Orchestra and Basso continuo in G minor (RV 531)' written after 1770. The sonorous work with its playful outer movements and expressive largo is published in this critical new edition on the basis of thesources.

Violine 1-Concerto for Flute Violin Violoncello Strings and Basso Continuo in A major (TWV 53:A2)Tafelmusik IIf Telemann was regarded by his contemporaries as one of the greatest of all composers his star faced with the overwhelming presence of Bach and Handel paled in the course of the 19th century to the verge of contempt. This assessment changed radically during the course of the last century. Through the systematic exploration of his music Telemann once considered purely an instrumental composer has emerged into a highly cultivated culturally well-connected and enormously versatile artistic personality who left an indelible mark on the musical life of his time.Again and again we discover an individual approach in his works that seems to abandon the musical conventions of his day both large and small. The Tafelmusik (Musique de Table) is a collection of chamber pieces for various ensembles arranged into 3 parts and is perhaps Telemann's most celebrated collection of music. Composed in 1733 the Tafelmusik clearly demonstrates Telemann's skill in handling a diversity of musical genres and a variety of instruments.- Urtext of the Telemann Edition
