Commissioned by Furman University for the inauguration of its 12th president Jay Bocook's Gloriana is based on The Faerie Queene an incomplete English epic poem written by Edmund Spenser and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. In the poem Queen Elizabeth is represented as the faerie queene herself Gloriana. This stately work for winds and percussion has a regal quality enhanced by soaring melodies and punctuated with fanfare-like brass figures. UNDER ONE FLAG - by JAY BOCOOK was commissioned by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games in conjunction with the CULTURAL OLYMPIAD. The work was composed in 1993 for the Atlanta Olympic Band. The title represents the spiritof the games with all nations under a single Olympic Flag.

(A Fantasy on Motifs of G. Verdi). The overture to Giuseppe Verdi's 1862 opera La Forza del Destino (The Power of Fate) has remained standard repertoire for orchestras around the world. In this imaginative work for winds, Jay Bocook pays homage to the mastery of Verdi and begins with the ominous 3-note fate theme from the overture. Throughout the piece melodies are recast and harmonies are embellished, culminating in an exhilarating conclusion where the final seven bars quote Verdi's original almost identically. A brilliant addition to the wind band repertoire.

Paying tribute to the storied F-16 Fighting Falcon jet fighter (known to pilots as the “Viper” and flown by the USAF Thunderbirds) this unique and fresh-sounding overture from Jay Bocook is characterized by boldharmonies and driving rhythmic patterns. The musical My Fair Lady (a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe) is based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. Show Me arranged by Mark Freeh is taken from Act II of My Fair Lady and is when Liza storms out of Higgins’ house to stumble outside into Freddy. Commissioned for the 2012 South Carolina All-State High School Band Jay's impressive three-movement suite based on melodies from the early American ?Sacred Harp? singing tradition is a masterwork of dramaticorchestrational devices. ?Stratfield? opens with a striking statement by the saxes and double reeds then builds intensity using woodwind flourishes and soaring brass lines. ?Idumea? begins in a quiet anddelicate manner then gives way to thundering percussion and striking harmonic effects. The joyous ?Pisgah? has a barn dance quality that provides the perfect conclusion to this powerful work for winds. Dur: c. 8:00
