Piano Quartet No. 1. Par JOST CHRISTIAN. Christian Jost spent the summer of 1987 in an Indian reservation in Arizona. Impressed by the foreign culture and deeply moved by the visit of a Native American burial site, he composed - apart from other works - the piano quartet 'Ritual Returning' in which Indian influences can be heard. Like many of his works, this vibrant work resembles a journey in which he assimilates impressions and thoughts.
'Ritual Returning' is an extraordinary addition to the common repertoire for piano quartet. This piece will also elate listeners who are reticent about contemporary music./ Répertoire / Quatuor avec Piano

Sumer is icumen in. Par ORFF CARL. The first known canon of European art music, now in the British Museum in London, is preserved in a thirteenth-century manusript from the English abbey in Reading: This is the so-called 'summer canon', whose verses greet the advent of summer.
An accompanying note elucidates the artistic layer-like construction of the sound structure: a two-voice foundation of bell-like, swinging pendulum tones supports an upper structure of four voices which enter at equal time intervals.
The note terms the canon 'rota' - round -, which makes reference to the turning, circling movement of the constantly pulsating sound. The circular figure originates in a vital, ages-old moving force in music-making, and it demands a dance-like execution.
But the canon is also, through the interaction of the strictly ordered voice entries, convivially bound musical form. Carl Orff was able to choose no better fitting musical form for the 'Greetings to Youth' at the Olympic Games 1972 in Munich than the medieval rota. In the connexion of the singing voices with the Orff instruments, today in world-wide use, a testimony of European tradition sounds in a living present. / Date parution : 1976-11-20/ Répertoire / Chœur Mixte [Stbar] et Ensemble Instrumental

RCT 59 (RAMEAU
JEAN-PHILIPPE) Choral, Orchestra [Sheet music] Barenreiter
Edition Complète. Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Rameau's only surviving opera based...(+)
Edition Complète. Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Rameau's only surviving opera based on a libretto by Voltaire has survived in two versions (1745 and 1746), whereby the 1745 version was long considered lost. Volume IV.12 of the series ?Opera omnia Rameau? presents a complete edition which enables performances of both versions.
Voltaire refers to Metastasio in his libretto in that he wishes to liberate the opera from the gallant milieu and to make it a moralizing stage work that is equally edifying and political. After a prologue dedicated to envy personified, the tyrants Bélus and Bacchus are chased out of the Hall of Fame and finally Trajan is crowned with laurels for defeating the rebels, forgiving them and ultimately turning the Hall of Fame into a public temple.
The music contains many remarkable passages, such as a richly orchestrated overture, the famous monologue ?Profonds abîmes du Ténare? with obbligato bassoons, and Trajan's artful final scene ?Ramage d'oiseaux?./ Répertoire / Chant et Orchestre

As Recorded By Bob Brookmeyer And The New Art Orchestra. Par MULLIGAN GERRY. Celebration, a 4-movement suite, was written for and premiered by Gerry Mulligan at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in Lübeck, Germany in 1994. Recorded by Bob Brookmeyer and the New Art Orchestra on New Works (Challenge CHR 70066), featuring Scott Robinson, baritone sax. 'The good will and beautiful playing of the musicians can not be described in words... just music. They have my eternal gratitude for making my life and music shine.' Bob Brookmeyer Bob Brookmeyer (b. 1929) began writing music at age 14 and also began playing the valve trombone, arriving in NY in 1952. After joining Stan Getz in 1953, he replaced Chet Baker in the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, remaining with Mulligan for nine years, writing much of the music for the Concert Jazz Band. With Thad Jones-Mel Lewis, he wrote ABC Blues, Willow Weep For Me and St. Louis Blues, all seminal additions to the big band literature. After returning from California in 1978, he became Musical Director of the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and wrote some of the finest music for that band including American Express, Ding Dong Ding, First Love Song, Hello and Goodbye, and Skylark. In the 1980s he wrote for both Jazz and Classical Orchestras and in 1994 formed the New Art Orchestra, an 18-piece ensemble of mainly European musicians. They have recorded two CDs for the Challenge label and commenced touring in 2001. A book on Composition is in the works and a DVD on Band Teaching is also planned. During the past decade, Brookmeyer has composed a diverse collection of jazz material, chamber music, and large orchestral works./ Répertoire / Big Band
