These works impressively document the last phase of the Baroque era. This edition is based on an early copy which belonged to Johann Philipp Kirnberger. It bears the title 'Sechs Sonaten für 2 fleutten von Friedemann Bach'. The Duets Nos. 5 and 6 were added by another copyist.

La présente transcription a été réalisée dans un but essentiellement pédagogique à partir de l'excellente édition Urtext publiée aux Editions Lemoine, sous la direction de D. Geoffroy. Elle en reproduit intégralement le texte, l'ornementation, ainsi que les quelques mentions de liaisons qui pouvaient figurer sur les manuscrits consultés, sans aucune adjonction. Mais il va de soi que les problèmes de technique et de phrasé spécifiques à la flûte amèneront les utilisateurs à compléter ces textes en conséquence: adjonction d'articulations, de modes d'attaque, de respirations: suppression ou modification, le cas échéant, de certains ornements (particulièrement dans les passages les plus aigus de la première flûte, ou en fonction de doigtés délicats). De telles modifications ne pouvaient figurer dans cette transcription dans la mesure où les solutions, multiples, dépendent avant tout du - niveau technique des élèves concernés. Est-il superflu, cependant, de préciser qu'elles devront avant tout s'insérer dans un total respect des intentions mélodiques et contrapuntiques de J.S. Bach. Nous tenons à remercier M. Louis Drouet (1792-1873) much admired virtuoso Flautist composer musical director and opera director was 'a Flautist of truly European standing and sphere of influence'. His method still forms part of today's standard teaching repertoire. The 'Little Sonatas' published here for the first time as a separate new edition constitute the final part of Part 3 of his method. In accordance with the remarks of Drouet who had two different performance versions in mind the sonatas are available in two instrumentations: for two Flutes and for Flute and Piano. The Piano accompaniment with its figured bass realized by GottfriedBach has been turned into a harmonic accompaniment.
