Both in the French version and MarciMeth’s excellent English translation it provides the material for an enthralling educational adventure in which children between the ages of five and eight are invited into their first experience of opera and choir singing. With her trademark finesse and sensitivity the composer tells the story of a little girl dealing with the death of a person she’d cherished above all: her grandfather. Written for choir in unison this tale wafts shimmering melodies over an instrumental accompaniment suffused in turn with gentle melancholy and light humour. An art that speaks from an open heart. Best known for his exemplary exuberant orchestral work The Planets Gustav Holst’s diverse gamut also included hymns pastoral songs and folk music. He and the poet Robert Bridges became great friends over time their friendship blossoming after Holst sought copyright of one of Bridges’ works in May 1925. This is a terrific hymn set to a poem of Bridges' typical of the combined workings of these two great English artists and has been edited here for SATB mixed choir and organ pedals by Alan Gibbs.

from La Chanson de la Naissance-This piece by Astor Piazzolla first appeared in a comedy theatre show by Kado Kostzer and Alfredo Arias called Famille d'Artistes. The original piece  La Chanson de la Naissance had a French text. Piazzolla is best known for his development of Tango Nuevo through his many works that cross the boundaries between tango jazz and classical music. This arrangement which is true to his original tune and harmonic scheme shows many of these traits. Here the simple tune and chorus is passed around all sections of the ensemble – including an unaccomapnied section – building to the choral tutti with thewords “joy to the world.”

An arrangement of one of the songs from The Little Prince a fabulous moving and melodic opera by Rachel Portman with luxurious counter melodies and placid harmonies. This opera is based on French philosopher andaviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery's novella Le Petit Prince an international classic penned in 1943. It was composed by Rachel Portman the first woman to win an Oscar for a film score (Emma-1996) with text by NicholasWright. While Saint-Exupery's moving parable of self-discovery is the foundation of the opera's appeal it is Portman's music that gives the work its dramatic impact. No. 2 from The Same Flame-Commissioned by the Somerset England based charity Churchill Music! The Same Flame was inspired by Pierre de Coubertin?s ideals of Olympism which gave rise to the modern Olympic and Paralympic values: Respect Excellence Friendship Courage Equality Determination and Inspiration. These seven values are celebrated in five movements so four of them had to double up ? Friendship with Equality and Courage with Determination. Each movement is scored for slightly different choral forces so the work is varied. Also individual movements may suit different choirs giving the opportunity for individual performance or collaboration between choirs. All fivemovements of The Same Flame are published as individual octavos. A complete vocal score is available on request from the publishers.A slower and more poignant movement Respectfully Yours takes the form of a letter from those who have long been disenfranchised and excluded ? they could be one of a number of groups! ? and who though now welcomed into the fold cannot take acceptance for granted. The memory of rejection is raw and recent. With polite reserve underwritten by passion they respectfully reaffirm their claim to be ?of the same flame?.
