Original key for high voice-Rachmaninoff composed his collection of 13 songs Op. 34 in 1912 but it was only three years later that he added a little closing piece without any text: the Vocalise which soonoutshone the other songs in terms of popularity and renown. Since its first performance in 1916 this expressive melancholy piece has circulated in countless arrangements by others.Rachmaninoff himself made anarrangement for Orchestra and Voice as well as one for orchestra alone. Our Urtext edition contains the original version for High Voice and Piano and is based on the autograph sources in the Glinka Museum in Moscow. A particularhighlight is the separate vocal part that not only serves singers well but also all those instrumentalists who wish to play this wonderful piece using the original solo part.

Humphrey Clucas is known for a wide range of choral and vocal music alongside a growing body of instrumental music and this beautiful and evocative song is set to words by A.E. Housman. Originally for voice and lute Evenfall also works well with piano accompaniment and the edition includes versions for high voice (A minor) and low voice (E minor). The accompaniment is simple and supportive allowing the flowing melody to soar above with a tonal and accessible style which should appeal to singers of all ages and abilities.Humphrey Clucas was born in 1941 and read English at King's College Cambridge where he was also a Choral Scholar. Having taught Englishfor twenty-seven years he subsequently became a Lay Vicar at Westminster Abbey but is now retired. As a composer he is self taught and although he is well-known for a set of Anglican Responses written as an undergraduate almost all his serious music has been written over the last twenty-five years. He has a growing reputation as a choral composer and has produced an impressive and steady stream of choral works both sacred and secular alongside much instrumental music. He has written works for Cathedrals in Chichester Guildford Salisbury and Winchester as well as for King's College Cambridge Southwell Minster and Westminster Abbey.

John Tavener's Schuon Lieder is a work of 6 songs arranged for Voice and Piano by the composer with words by Frithjof Schuon. This version was first performed at the Wigmore Hall in London on 28thSeptember 2007. A full performance of this Score lasts around 17 minutes. The original version of this work for Voice Percussion Piano and String Quartet was performed at the Cheltenham Festival on 16th July 2004.The 6 songs in this score are settings of poems by Frithjof Schuon translated by Catherine Schuon. Schuon was a foremost a metaphysician but also a gifted painter and poet. Please note the lyrics are in German.

Gustav Holst has earned a place among the most revered of late 19th and early 20th century composers and is best known for his enduring Orchestral suite The Planets.But before that great work in his use of Englsh folksongs Gnostic texts and these Vedic hymns one can discern Holst’s search for a compositional Voice beyond the constraints of the European canon in the early 1900’s. Some see composition of the Vedic Hymns as a turning point in Holst’scompositional life. The quality is not completely consistent and Holst remained true to his Western musical inheritance for the most part in setting them but as art songs they are deeply felt and moving to hear.The nine songsare scored for mezzo-Soprano or baritone Voice. The texts are taken from the Rigveda one of the four sacred texts of Hinduism and the oldest religious text in the world.The first set of three comprises Ushas Varuna and Maruts or Dawn Sky and Stormclouds respectively. The second includes Indra (God of Storm and Battle) Varuna II (the Waters) and Song of the Frogs. The third group moves into the human sphere with Vac (Speech) Creation and Faith.
