Britten's arrangements of Schubert's The Trout (op 32/D550) for small orchestra, and Schumann's Spring Night (op 39 no 12) for chamber orchestra, dating from 1942, are settings of anonymous English translations. The new edition includes the original German words (Schubart, Eichendorff), as many performers and audiences will prefer the songs in the original language. In his preface, Nicholas Clark, Librarian at the Britten-Pears Foundation, speculates on why the songs were set in English and on the possibility that the translator was Peter Pears, commenting that “the English language settings allowed [Britten] to edge away from existing versions of the songs, to assist him in imprinting his own unique mark on both works.” The Trout is scored for 2 clarinets & strings; Spring Night for flute, oboe, 2 clarinets, bassoon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, trombone, triangle, harp (or piano) and strings.

In the past decade the Budapest Klezmer Band and the Ferenc Liszt Chamber Orchestra have proved in their joint concerts that the melodic world of the instrumental music of the Ashkenazic Jews of Eastern Europe and an ensemble consisting of the clarinet, piano, accordion, trombone, violin, double bass and percussion can be successfully combined with the sound of the classical orchestra. Ferenc Javori's Klezmer Suite has become part of the repertoire of both ensembles, and has scored notable success both in Hungary and abroad. The printed edition made the work accessible for other ensembles as well. The movements can also be performed separately.

Rihards Dubra (born Latvia, 1964) wrote his piano concerto – Liepaja Concerto No. 3 – in 2012. A 33-minute work for solo piano and symphony orchestra comprising triple wind and brass, percussion, harp and strings, the concerto starts with a mournful piano melody. It has an elemental beauty – we hear water in the sonorities of harps and chime-bells, earth in the rhythmic formulae, and fire in his colourful harmonic sequences – ending with a majestic and vibrant conclusion.
