In the last years of his life Brahms seems to have become weary of composing but fortunately for posterity in 1891 hemet the solo clarinettist of the Meiningen court orchestra Richard Mühlfeld whose mellifluous art of performance captivated him and inspired him to new works. The Trio op. 114 is melancholy and autumnal in character and isloved by all clarinettists. It is now available from Henle in a revised edition. Brahms?s manuscript of his op. 114 lies in Munich the home city of G. Henle Publishers. The musical text follows that of the New Brahms CompleteEdition and thus guarantees the highest degree of precision and reflects the current state of research. The pianist Klaus Schilde has added valuable fingerings to this Urtext edition.

The title of Paul Mealor's Spectred Light refers to the ghostly lights sometimes seen at night or twilight over rivers or lakes.Tales of the ‘Spectred Lights’ can be found in numerous folk tales around the world and it is often depicted as a malicious character in these stories. In Welsh folklore it is said that the light is 'fairy fire' held in the hand of a ‘pwca’ - a small goblin-like fairy that leads lone travelers off the beaten path at night. As the traveller follows the pwca through the marsh the fire is extinguished leaving the man lost.This short work for Flute Clarinet and Piano is an attempt to depict through sound thisstrange phenomenon. The piece flickers into life and though a series of asymmetric variations leads the listener into a maze of aural colours. As the music reaches breaking point it disappears upwards and dissolves into metal wind-chimes. Out of this a short respite is heard before the music finally hurtles into its finale a blaze of virtuosity.Spectred Light was commissioned by and dedicated to virtuoso clarinetist Esther Lamneck.

Scored for clarinet, cello and piano Clarinet Trio (BH 12624) is in three movements, with a total duration of 20 minutes. The first movement, 'Ljud stort, ljud' (Sound big, sound), was commissioned in 2008 to celebrate the centenary of Svenska kulturfonden. 'Som det stilla vi söker' (Like the tranquillity we seek) and 'Slå våg, slå' (Crash wave, crash) were commissioned in the same year by the Bergen International Festival. Trio in d minor op. 3-Alexander Zemlinsky is mainly known for his operas and orchestral songs with their opulent late Romantic orchestration. His earlier inspired hit the Trio For Clarinet Op. 3 written in 1896 owes agreat deal to Zemlinsky’s first important role model Johannes Brahms as far as inflection and instrumentation are concerned. It was also Brahms who following its first performance in Vienna enthusiastically recommendedthe trio to his publisher Simrock.As the autograph has disappeared Henle’s edition follows the musical text in the first edition. It underwent careful examination and was cleared of numerous partly blatant engraver’serrors. Alongside the Piano score Henle’s edition comprises a part for Clarinet in Bb/A and an authentic alternative part for Violin as well as a Cello part.

The poem forms part of Whitman’s magnum opus LEAVES OF GRASS which he revised extended and worked on practically all his writing life.I had previously drawn some lines from the poem SEADRIFT for another work of mine a work likewise entitled SEADRIFT (1978) for soprano and ensemble.In this present new piece I did not set out to depict in music ‘the soul of the sea’ or anything like that. I did however have an intention of making the piece a sort of outstretched hand from one small country with a multitude of islands and – necessarily – a lot of water around it (I am referring of course to my native Denmark) to another country with many islands: Hawaii with its far-away exotic appeal (at least for a Scandinavian) and its remoteness thousands and thousands of nautical miles away. Folkloristic Hawaiian chant (alluring samples of which were kindly forwarded to me from the commissioner of the work) fascinated and impressed me so much that my melodic repertoire in the new piece sometimes echo a Hawaiian Melodybrother.A latent wave-character is characteristic of the piece. You will hear a simultaneity of different ‘wavelengths’ and often a dense and complex melodic and rhythmic
