(+)
In 1929 Paul Wittgenstein, a pianist and war veteran who lost his right arm in the Great War, commissioned Maurice Ravel to write a concerto for him to perform. The result was one of Ravel?s most thrilling compositions and, for Wittgenstein, the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career. The piano reduction in our edition contains both Ravel?s and Wittgenstein?s fingering. Also included is a solo part without fingering, thereby giving pianists the opportunity to enter their own fingering after having studied those of Ravel and Wittgenstein.

This collection of sheet music by the great French composer Maurice Ravel features 19 of his greatest pieces all newly-arranged especially for this volume. The subtle melodies and achingly beautiful harmonies of theselush Impressionist pieces truly do illustrate the sheer Joy Of Ravel. The pieces by Ravel included in this collection rank alongside Debussy as some of the prettiest Piano music evercomposed. Ravel himself categorically refused the term 'Impressionist' believing it to be reserved for paintings only but his?music so closely resembles the colourful flourishing and affective beauty of those worksof art that it is difficult to resist such a description. Featuring works like Boléro Jeux D'Eau Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte as well as excerpts from La Valse The Joy Of Ravel?forsolo Piano sound utterly divine. Pieces like Menuet Antique Prélude and the selections from Le Tombeau De Couperin?perfectly encapsulate what makes Ravel's compositions soincredible. His perfectionist methods resulted in extended harmonies complexly musical modulations and masterful melodies that make these 19 works of art an unabashed joy to play and to hear. One of the great things about thissheet music book is the visual beauty of the music. With lilting notes and extensive ties this is not only a work full of aural pleasure but it's some of the nicest-looking notation out there. Certainly in this case what you seeis what you get simply The Joy Of Ravel. The Joy Of...?series is a constantly growing collection of musical editions that is now recognised and loved throughout theworld. Originally compiled by the editorial hand of renowned teacher arranger and musicologist Denes Agay the series continues to reflect his influence and covers a wide variety of musical genres including the classics folk

(+)
Maurice Ravel's Gaspard De La Nuit is one of the most important Piano works of the 20th century and constitutes the height of the extension of the pianistic playing techniques and tonal possibilites which was already begun by Chopin and Liszt in the 19th century. The three movements Ondine Le Gibet and Scarbo are based on poems by Aloysius Bertrand which Ravel put in front of each of the three pieces. Thus too the work is in a tradition represented by composers such as Schumann and Liszt in the 19th century that combines instrumental music with literary models. For the new edition published by the Wiener Urtext Edition the editorsconsulted not only the first edition used almost exclusively up to now but also Ravel's autograph as well as his personal copy of the first edition on the basis of which numerous passages in the musical text could be corrected and brought closer to Ravel's original intention. In addition the editors included corrections from personal copies of various students of Ravel. Entries of the composer going well beyond mere text corrections and practical performance tips handed down by his students are analysed in the Notes of Interpretation. The reader-friendly large-format Wiener Urtext edition is completed by a trilingual glossary of the French performance instructions used by Ravel as well as English and German translations of Bertrand's three poems.

(+)
Ravel was not only a master craftsman of exquisitely constructed chamber works but he was also a key innovator inspired by the tonal/atonal experiments of Schoenberg Stravinsky and the Second Viennese School. This is most closely reflected in the remarkable Mallarmé Poems Ravel's closest approach to the modernist innovations. Elsewhere his Piano Trio presents a perfect example of the delicacy and intricacy of Ravel's chamber music. Joined by several other full chamber pieces this is music that presents Ravel at his most musically ambitious brought together for the first time in one large-format attractively-priced volume.

(+)
It was unmistakably Liszt?s piano piece ?Les jeux d?eau la Villa d?Este? that inspired Ravel to compose one of his most famous works in 1901: ?Jeux d?eau?. Laid out in sonata form its sound is governed by myriad motions of water and sustained by innovative highly virtuosic piano textures against a freely migrating and richly coloured harmonic backdrop. Nicolas Southon has re-evaluated the work?s many sources including memoirs from musicians close to Ravel such as Vlado Perlemuter Jacques Février and Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. Special attention has been devoted to the original part-writing in Ravel?s notation. Rounding off the new edition are an informative Foreword atrilingual glossary as well as fingering and notes on performance by Ravel specialist Alexandre Tharaud.

(+)

According to Ravel himself the strange title of the little Piano piece composed in 1899 ?Pavane for a dead princess? should not be ascribed too much importance. He chose it mainly because he liked the alliterationit contained. At the same time he did however agree that the music evokes ?a pavane that a little princess once might have danced at the Spanish court?.Following its premiere in 1902 the simple but effective piece gainedunparalleled popularity not least reflected in the numerous arrangements made of it one of which for small orchestra was by Ravel himself. We are publishing the work in its original version as a fitting addition to our worksby Ravel.

One of Ravel?s earliest works Jeux d?Eau was written for solo Piano in 1901. It is dedicated to Gabriel Fauré under whom Ravel was studying at the time. The title can be variously translated asFountains or Water Games. It was inspired by a piece by Lizst of the same name. Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is often considered after the death of Debussy in 1918 to be the leading Frenchcomposer of the 1920s and 30s. Earlier in his career he had caused consternation in the highly conservative pre-war French musical establishment with his unmistakable and highly original style.

(+)
Maurice Ravel wrote his Menuet Sur Le Nom D'Haydn in September 1909 to commemorate the Viennese classicist who died 100 years before on 31 May 1809. The piece was published for the first time in connection with an 'Hommage à Joseph Haydn' in the Revue musicale to which several contemporaries of Ravel contributed as well. The original edition still in use today was published shortly after. A comparison with the composer's autograph currently in France and privately owned clearly shows the errors and shortcomings of the two first editions so that Ravel's musical intentions can now be published in full measure for the first timein the present new critical edition.

Klaviertrio-As with all of his mature chamber music works Ravel also emerges as an innovator of traditional forms and techniques in his piano trio composed in 1914. Thus the ?Passacaglia? movement corresponds to the underlying form of theBaroque Period. The music on the other hand was according to Ravel ?like that of Saint-Saëns? which was surely meant ironically. For the historicizing template only served as a framework for experiments with musical idiom: froma constant oscillation between major and minor to combinations and overlaying of the most diverse metres. The fingering for our edition of this technically extremely demanding work was provided by the renowned French pianistPascal Rogé.

This work was given its world premiere by Ricardo Vines on April 5th 1902 and was the first of Ravel's works to achieve real popularity. It is dedicated to the Princess Edmond de Polignac a painter and wealthy member of the French aristocracy. The Pavane was popular in the 16th Century and during this time it became established as an introductory dance to the Galliard. It was intended to express ceremonial dignity. Ravel's version is a piece of great charm and beautiful in its poignancy.
