Four poems sharing a common motif of 'Night' provide the texts for my choral cycle Nocturnes the American Choral Directors Association's commissioned work for its 2005 national convention. For Rilke's atmospheric ?Sanuit d'ete ? several melodic themes are supported by dense colorful harmonies in both the choral and piano parts leading to a climactic section where all are combined and stated simultaneously. Neruda's ?Soneto de laNoche ? from his Cien Sonetos de Amor speaks of an eternal love that transcends death while reaffirming life. My a cappella setting of this gorgeous poem is predominantly quiet serene and folk-like utilizing directharmonies accompanying long lyrical vocal lines. Agee's wondrous ?Sure on this Shining Night? is set much like a song from the American musical theater a genre for which I have held a life-long esteem. Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria in D RV589 for SATB and Piano.The Gloria in D Major RV 589 is Vivaldi's most famous sacred work and it is among his most important church music compositions. An independent work in one movement it was probably composed between 1713 and 1717 for the Ospedale della Piet one of the orphanages of Venice in which young girls received a thorough musical training. The musically representative work is divided into 12 sections which differ in scoring movement type key and expressed emotions.

D-Dur-Jan Dismas Zelenka's Magnificat in D (ZWV 108; D-Dur) for SATB.As it does not require a festive choir of trumpets Zelenka's 'Magnificat' was apparently not written for the Vesper service on a high feast day. On comparing the work with Bach's large-scale 'Magnificat' the simpler formal and musical cast of the former becomes immediately apparent.
