Symphonie no. 1 The Lord of the Rings [Le Seigneur des Anneaux] La première symphonie de Johan de Meij “The Lord of the Rings” [Le Seigneur des Anneaux] est basée sur la trilogie romanesque du même nom de J.R.R. Tolkien. Depuis leur parution en 1955, ces livres ont fasciné des millions de lecteurs dans le monde entier. La symphonie est composée de cinq mouvements séparés illustrant chacun un personnage ou un épisode important de ce grand succès littéraire. L’oeuvre est écrite pour orchestre d’harmonie, avec des parties réservées au saxophone soprano, au bugle et au piano. Les différentes parties sont intitulées : I. GANDALF (The Wizard) [Le Magicien] II. LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood) [La Forêt des Elfes] III. GOLLUM (Sméagol) IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK [Voyage dans les Ténèbres] a. The Mines of Moria [Les Mines de la Moria] b. The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm [Le Pont de Khazad-Dûm] V. HOBBITS La symphonie a été écrite entre mars 1984 et décembre 1987 et a eu sa première à Bruxelles le 15 mars 1988, interprétée par la Musique Royale des Guides Belges sous la direction de Norbert Nozy. En 1989, la Symphonie LE SEIGNEUR DES ANNEAUX remporte le premier prix du Concours International de Composition Sudler à Chicago. Minerva by Jan Van der Roost was composed on the commission of the German ?Musikverein Braunshausen? on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the orchestra. The composition first performed on September 17 1999 is not a street march but a concert march just like Mercury and Arsenal. The use and variation of different rhythmic patterns gives the first part of this march a distinctly dynamic character. Two main themes are presented in several instrumental combinations. The theme from the trio on the other hand is characterized by a broad melodic approach using large intervals. This theme wreathed by high woodwinds is heard one more time after a contrasting newpart but now in a somewhat slower tempo. The counterpoint in this part refers to the first part of the march. The brilliant ending suits a festive anniversary march!

According to his teachers Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years. In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music including his six symphonies solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos) ballets (The Nut Cracker Swan Lake) and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette). In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infectedwater. His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls. David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style. Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: ‘I will be a great composer within 10 years time.’
