Bethlehem from Boublil and Schönberg’s 1996 musical Martin Guerre is a great addition to any Holiday repertoire this season. The lesser known historical musical from the same creative team that produced Les Miserables and Miss Saigon features similar vocal monumentality as its predecessors. This piece is the best of both worlds combining the grand sound of musical theatre with the festive atmosphere of carolling and will be a welcome change to often overplayed and dusty Christmas programmes. In this edition Bethlehem is arranged for SATB (Soprano Alto Tenor and Bass) Voices with Pianoaccompaniment.

Cette chanson datant du XIX e siècle a été recueillie par Léon Simon à Biron (Ciney) en 1890. Le château en question est sans doute le château moyenâgeux de Beaufort situé près de Huy en Belgique. J'ai harmonisé cette très belle mélodie entre modalité et tonalité, de manière simple et consonante, pour un niveau de Choeur amateur. Deux ou trois voix solistes interviennent au début et à la fin dans un court passage. L'' habillage ' harmonique suit le texte, avec quelques libertés. Je pense que l'idéal est une interprétation très sobre, le moins lyrique possible, un tempo assez lent (mais souple), un beau dessin mélodique, des nuances subtiles et contrastées. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) A Cappella

The grand motets of Michael-Richard de Lalande (1657-1726) principal Chapel Music Director for Louis XIV and Louis XV marked the high point of sacred music under the ancien régime.
