Brahms Opus 40. Par BRAHMS JOHANNES / HOUBEN KEVIN. Johannes Brahms peut être considéré comme l\'un des meilleurs compositeurs de musique de chambre du XIXe siècle. Il était un géant dans ce domaine et un digne successeur de Beethoven et de Haydn. Le Trio en Mib opus 40 pour piano, violon et cor naturel est un chef-d\'?uvre de sa musique de chambre. En 1865, l\'année de ce trio, la mère de Brahms, Christiane, meurt. On sait qu\'il avait des sentiments profonds pour elle. Le mouvement lent porte l?indication de tempo Adagio Mesto (triste) et peut être considéré comme un chant de lamentation pour sa mère. L\'?uvre a été exécutée pour la première fois le 28 novembre 1865 à Zurich et a été publiée un an plus tard, en novembre 1866. Dans cette version pour orchestre d?harmonie, Kevin Houben reste aussi fidèle que possible à l\'original. Le résultat est une orchestration profonde et sombre du merveilleux Adagio Mesto. La première composition publiée de Vaughan Williams en 1902 a été un cadre pour voix et piano d'un poème de William Barnes. Le lyrique qualité de la chanson folklorique de la mélodie en font un choix irrésistible pour cet arrangement pour le début concert idiome de la bande. Situé dans trois, quatre fois, l'arrangement luxuriant renforce la musicalité et le concept triple mètres. Ce paramètre va certainement faire sonner les débutants luxuriante et poli. Superbe! Tchaikovsky\'s colorful harmony speaks here, with passing chromaticism adding color to the music. The fanfare theme is transformed in the quiet central section, still shifting to the minor mode with short solo passages for flute, bassoon, trumpet, xylophone and oboe (cued in flutes). The Syncopated Band Parade was written to introduce beginner players to ensemble playing as early as possible. Thanks to the low grade of difficulty of this piece this it is possible to play in a ‘real band’ after only a few lessons. Because of the four-part instrumentation The Syncopated Band Parade is suitable for smaller strengths taking into account that it is important to divide parts evenly among the players. Also includes an ad-lib keyboard/piano part to support the ensemble.

According to his teachers Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was not particularly gifted. His special talents were acknowledged only in 1865 when he had been working for the Ministry of Finances for some years. In 1866 he was appointed teacher at the Conservatory and applied himself to composing. His oeuvre is fairly extensive and many of his compositions receive a high ranking on the international list of classical music including his six symphonies solo concertos (violin concerto and piano concertos) ballets (The Nut Cracker Swan Lake) and his overtures (1812 and Romeo and Juliette). In 1893 Tchaikovsky died of Cholera after drinking a glass of infectedwater. His Slavonic March is a popular concert piece for symphonic orchestra that is still frequently performed in concert halls. David Well arranged the theme and created a contemporary march in rock style. Tchaikovsky once said to an unsatisfied teacher: ‘I will be a great composer within 10 years time.’

Score and parts.Born in Richmond Hill New York on 10 December 1913 Morton Gould was recognised early on as a child prodigy with theability to improvise and compose. At the age of six he had his first composition published. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School) but his most important teachers were Abby Whiteside (Piano) andVincent Jones (composition).Gould enjoyed an illustrious career. In addition to gaining a Pulitzer Prize for 'Stringmusic' he was Musical America's 1994 Composer-of-the-Year and recieved a Kennedy Center Honor inrecognition of lifetime contributions to American culture.A long-time member of the American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers Gould was elected president of ASCAP in 1986 a post he held until 1994.In 1986 he was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He also served on the board of the American Symphony Orchestra League and on the National Endowment for the Arts music panel.

(based on Silent Night)-Even though the familiar carol ?Silent Night? has been arranged for band many times before this unique setting by Rick Kirby deserves special attention. An oboe solo accompanied by piano sets the stage for animpressive rhapsodic approach that includes lush full ensemble passages with harmonic twists solos for recorder and euphonium and also band vocals at the end. Sure to become a holiday highlight.

Tuba Concerto est une œuvre de commande pour le facteur allemand Miraphone spécialisé dans les cuivres. Philip Sparke a composé et dédié cette pièce à Markus Theinert un ami de longue date qui en a assuré la création le 30 avril 2006 à Sigmaringen en Allemagne accompagné par le Brass Band Oberschwaben-Allgäu.L?idée d?un concerto pour tuba a été longuement discutée entre le soliste et le compositeur dont le souci était de créer un véritable concerto développant un matériau parfaitement adapté au rôle solistique de l?instrument sans tomber dans la caricature. Ainsi la partie soliste couvre trois octaves et demie et exploite pleinement les qualitéstechniques et expressives de l?instrument.Tuba Concerto est une composition en deux mouvements joints qui peuvent également être joués séparément. Le premier mouvement débute lentement puis s?accélère progressivement. La cadence annonce la réexposition du matériel thématique initial. Le second mouvement écrit en forme de scherzo semble plus résolu mais chemine vers plus de légèreté. La reprise du matériel thématique initial offre une conclusion efficace et puissante.Ce concerto est également disponible dans une version pour Tuba solo et Brass Band (AMP 173-030) et Tuba solo et Piano (AMP 187-401).

Despite his having moved to the United States with his family when he was 11 years old Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was born in Canada where glimpses of his talent had already begun to manifest themselves at an early age. Among Dett's earliest titles was his Characteristic March Two-Step After the Cakewalk. Perhaps written when Dett was just a teenager this current edition is wholly based upon its original 1901 band publication that was arranged by Lee Orean Smith. Smith was also responsible for preparing Dett's piano solo version for publication as well as its form for theatre orchestra and mandolin club. Owing to the fact that Smith's highly idiomatic scoring wasprepared for a band of that period this edition adapts edits and extends Smith's instrumentation in order to make it possible for Dett's music to become available to a new generation of musicians and listeners alike. Euphonium Concerto No. 3-Diamond Concerto est une œuvre de commande de la formation allemande Musikverein Mörschied dirigée par le Dr Eric Grandjean pour un concert avec un invité spécial le soliste Steven Mead. Ensemble ils ont créé cette œuvre le 28 avril 2012 au théâtre de la ville d?Idar-Oberstein.Cette commande représente l?un des points culminants d?une amitié de trente années entre le compositeur et le soliste leur relation ayant donné naissance à de nombreux enregistrements et concerts et maintenant à un concerto. Pendant la composition de cette œuvre Sparke avait sans cesse à l?esprit le son bien particulier de l?euphonium de Steven Mead et il a employé librement lavariété de styles que ce virtuose mondialement connu a adoptés au cours de sa brillante carrière de soliste.Le village de Mörschied se trouve à l?ouest de Francfort-sur-le-Main dans la région surnommée Route allemande des pierres précieuses célèbre pour son industrie de la joaillerie. C?est pourquoi le compositeur a décidé de saluer cette province en intitulant son œuvre Diamond Concerto. Les trois mouvements sont chacun nommés d?après un diamant célèbre :1 EARTH STARDe caractère plutôt sérieux ce mouvement débute avec une fantaisie libre pour le soliste sur un accord statique de l?orchestre. Vient ensuite un Allegro Moderato en mode mineur où de courts motifs sont progressivement répétés et développés par l?orchestre et le soliste.2 OCEAN DREAML?on pourra entendre ici une variante d?un extrait de Music for Battle Creek incluant une mélodie lente et émouvante que le compositeur écrivit alors dans l?optique d?une future interprétation réalisée par Steven Mead.3 BLUE HEARTSuivant l?idée de Steven Mead ce mouvement est écrit dans un style de be-bop et prend la forme d?une valse jazzy.
