Victor Caussinus wrote two versions of Air varié, a concertante piece for ophicleide and orchestra: one for an instrument in C and symphonic orchestra, the other one for an instrument in B b and concert band. The piece belongs to the theme and variation genre. After an andante Introduction in minor, the theme is stated and followed by three variations and a Polacca. After a brief return of the Andante, the piece ends with a virtuoso Finale.The arrangement for euphonium or saxhorn and piano is adapted from the original manuscript of the concert band version, the instrumentation of which calls for: '1 piccolo in D b, 1 soprano clarinet in E b, 4 clarinets in B b (including one solo), 2 bassoons, 2 cornets in A b, 2 horns in E b, 2 horns in B b, 2 trumpets in E b, 3 trombones, 1 ophicleide in B b?. / Tuba Et Piano

Par LAMBERT RICHARD. 3 movement sonata in a modern style The Sonata for euphonium and piano was written in 2013, an idiomatic transcription of the Sonata for bassoon and piano (Op.36) Lasting about 13 minutes, it has three movements: Allegro Moderato - Larghetto - Allegretto con spirito. The first movement is free-ranging tonally, continually developing the initial thematic material - a neo-Baroque motif with prominent use of a minor seventh interval. The time signature is continually changing, predominantly between 2/4 and 3/8, to give a highly-charged rhythmic, and perhaps unsettled, effect. The central movement is expressive, melancholy and desolate. The rhythm is more regular here - largely a steady 6/8 flow, butharmonically, the highly chromatic style is almost atonal to enhance this forlorn atmosphere. The movement explores the entire range of the euphonium and the piano accompaniment converses contrapuntally, sharing the numerous motifs with the euphonium. It concludes plaintively with reiterations of the euphonium's initial four notes. The finale reverts to a more relaxed, and uplifting, mood. The euphonium's initial scalic motif also has a neo-Baroque flavour. This originates from a solitary piano figure (bar 202) in the first movement. In fact, these outer movements have numerous melodic and harmonic links to consolidate a sense of overall organic shape. Ultimately, the whole movement derives from its first few bars, and constantly develops this material. / Niveau : Avancé / Répertoire / Euphonium et Piano

Le concept original pour ce travail était une suite de mouvements courts, chacun avec son propre caractère, mais au moment où que le premier mouvement était complète, il était clair qu'un format de trois mouvements classique allait travailler hors mieux. Le mouvement d'ouverture contient beaucoup syncope et est presque rag-comme dans le style. Le second mouvement plus lent explore la capacité insurpassable de l'euphonium à jouer Lyriquement, avec un thème qui est repris plus tard par la bande tandis que le soliste tisse un descant de filigrane. Cela nous amène directement dans le troisième mouvement, qui est presque bebop dans le style et montre les fonctionnalités avec de l'euphonium. Le concerto a été composé pour le soliste virtuose, Steven Mead.
