In 1977 The Association of English Singers and Speakers published a four-volume work A Heritage of Twentieth Century British Song which was a collection of songs published by Boosey & Hawkes and which were in the opinion of the editors worthy of the attention that such a publication would bring. Sixteen years later with the benefit of further perspective the Association has published this supplemental volume differing from its distinguished predecessor in that it includes works both unpublished and published by a variety of companies. The composers range from the very most familiar and celebrated Ralph Vaughan Williams Arnold Bax Elizabeth Poston to thelesser-known like Rebecca Clarke and Alastair MacGeorge. The book includes biographical information on the composers and notes about each song for performance purposes. The technical requirements range from quite straightforward to most demanding.

Taken from Rusalka the eighth of Dvorak’s nine operas and the one that has remained his most popular. The story was adapted by Jaroslav Kvapil from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid and relocated to Bohemia with a Czech water-spirit or Rusalka in the principal role. Rusalka loves a mortal prince a witch grants her humanity but the romance doesn’t work out and she returns heartbroken to the water where she joins her beloved in death. The Song to the Moon comes from Act I. From her woodland pool Rusalka sings of her longing in the shimmering moonlight Silver moon upon the deep dark sky…tell me tell me oh where does my lovedone bide?

High Voice-High Voice. Italian composer Franceso Paolo Tosti (1846-1916) wrote more than 350 songs among which were favorites of famous singers from Caruso and Tetrazzini in his day to Pavarotti and Carreras in ours. With a direct andsimple grace and sensual Italianate vocal lines his works were in some ways an art music reply to the Neapolitan folk tradition. Featuring 30 Tosti songs available for the first time in two keys these editions present excellentmaterial for teaching the basics of classical singing as well as for the recital stage. They also include translations for study a biography of the composer and a select discography.
