Sie beinhaltet Viola-Bearbeitungen der Werke von Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn, Vally Weigl, Lena Stein-Schneider und Ruth Schonthal (Band 1). Das von Schonthal aufgenommene Allegro moderato ist eine Originalkomposition für Viola und Klavier. Im 2. Band begegnen wir den Komponistinnen Helene Liebmann und Sarah Feigin. Der Titel der Ausgabe bezieht sich auf die Rolle der Prophetin Mirjam, der älteren Schwester von Mose und Aaron. Beim Auszug des israelischen Volkes aus Ägypten führte sie nach der Durchquerung des Schilfmeeres den Freudentanz und Gesang der Frauen an (2. Buch Mose 15,20-21). Bezeichnenderweise hat der Berliner Maler Wilhelm Hensel im 19. Jahrhundert seine Frau, die Komponistin Fanny Hensel geb. Mendelssohn, als Mirjam porträtiert.Das Repertoire romantischer Konzertliteratur für Viola ist recht begrenzt. According to Elgar the concert overture came to him in a single moment of inspiration while visiting Italy with his family in the winter of 1904. It was given its premiere by the Hallé Orchestra in March of that year with the central Viola serenade winning particular acclaim. Elgar then adapted the work as a song then for Viola and Piano and then for other instruments.At the time this piece was written Elgar had achieved universal renown with his Enigma Variations and The Dream of Gerontius and was established not only as a composer at the peak of British music of that time but also as a major Romantic composer. The Italianate rendering of the work is a nod to thepiece?s beginnings on the Adriatic coast. The work is full of the unrequited yearning of Elgar?s lyric work and a very effective sonatina for performance.

The famous opera by George and Ira Gershwin from the novel 'Porgy' by DuBose Heyward. George and Ira Gershwin joined DuBose Heyward in Charleston to write the opera which had been germinating in George's imagination for several years. Porgy and Bess was George Gershwin's longest and most ambitious creation but it was not truly successful during his lifetime. Some of the songs had achieved popularity before Gershwin's death in 1937 but the work earned real approval and favor only after the 1940 Theater Guild presentation of a slightly revised version. For years it was performed more frequently in Europe where it was considered a true American opera. Arranged for viola andpiano by Alan Arnold.
