When in 2008 the composer received the commission for a piece with English Horn from Cecilia Benner patron of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit he immediately thought of the duo between this instrument and the Oboe that Berlioz in the Symphonie fantastique placed at the beginning of the ‘Scène aux champs’ making suddenly appear a nocturnal country landscape where two shepherds carry on a dialogue on their pipes. First performed in March 2009 inits original version for English Horn Violin and Cello the Lyric Interlude for English Horn and Piano (Op.110b) nonetheless proclaims another tradition: that of British pastoralism illustrated by the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) the 50th anniversary of his death having just been celebrated. This score pays him homage of rare sensitivity: set off by refined counterpoint the undulating lament of the beginning rhythmically supple evokes the waving wheat as does Vaughan Williams in the opening undulation of his Symphony No.3. The lyrical effusion briefly interrupted by a scherzo in 6/8 again pours out making the work evolve towards a slow ecstatic atmosphere close to the last of the English composer’s Three Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes. Far from bucolic postcard clichés and servile imitation this Lyric Interlude opens the doors to a realm where pure beauty reigns. Schnee - Ten Canons For Nine Instruments was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2006-08. Commissioned by Westdeutscher Rundfunk for 'Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik 2008' with support from Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung and The Danish Arts Council. Dedicated to Harry Vogt and Ensemble Recherche. Programme Note: In the beginning of the 90s I arranged some of J.S. Bach’s canons for ensemble – in total seven single standing works from his entire life span. I became totally absorbed into this music and arranged them with the intention of the music being repeated many many times as a kind of minimal music. Obviously I didn’t know which durations Bach had in mind but by listening to his canons in this way a profound new moving world of circular time was opened to me.Depending on the perspective on these canons the music and its time can stand still or move either backwards or forwards.In my own work an ongoing idea has persisted of at some point writing a work consisting of a number of canonical movements that would explore this universe of time. And when I was offered the commission for Ensemble Recherche and Wittener Tage it felt as the right time to do this.In Schnee a few simple and fundamental musical questions are explored. What is a Vorsatz? And what is a Nachsatz? Can a phrase be answering? Or questioning?The guideline or rule for the canons is very simple: We start out with an answering Vorsatz followed by a questioning Nachsatz. Throughout the time of the piece these two are intertwined more and more as more and more dicht geführt canons until at the end they are interchanged. Now the question and then the answer. The two canons are identical like a painting in two versions but with different colors. And where the first one does not include the space the second one does as well as containing more

Parts = WH31261A Original version (1992) for Mezzo Soprano Clarinet Violin Cello and Piano: WH31259 Programme note This work was written for the tenth anniversary of the Vækstcenteret (the growth center) with a dedication to its head Jes Bertelsen. This center is a place for consciousness training as well as instruction in meditation practices and various forms of self-development. It is also a community of spiritual fellowship and a place to find peace and inspiration for internal contemplation.  The original version of the piece was scored for mezzo-soprano clarinet and harpsichord. The work is a quodlibet utilizing a Danish song by Oluf Ring – Sig nærmer tiden (The time is near for you to leave) – and two themes by Johan Sebastian Bach from Die Kunst der Fugue: the main theme and the B-A-C-H theme which the Baroque composer introduces in the last fugue the moment before the composition breaks off unfinished.
