In these pieces internationally celebrated cellist Julian Lloyd Webber has taken music from Purcell to Rachmaninov-much of it originally written for two voices-and adapted it to the medium of two cellos and accompanying piano. These unique arrangements which he performs with his wife Jiaxin Lloyd Webber on a Naxos CD (see back cover for details) and on tour allows their cello voices to blend together as they exploremusic of lyricism quiet melancholy and tuneful energy.

This arrangement was written in Offenbach's anniversary year 2019 for the highly acclaimed CD (Sony) of the young star soloist Raphaela Gromes with chamber music for cello, the instrument the composer loved and played like none other. In addition to unknown, sometimes virtuoso, sometimes contemplative new discoveries, the album should not be without the master's hit melody: Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann, which begins with the immortal cello solo. And so Gromes' piano partner Julian Riem created this delightful new version for two cellos and piano especially for this CD. What some people do not know is that the melody actually comes from an earlier work by Offenbach, the romantic opera Les Fées du Rhin, where it is the musical hallmark of the eponymous nature spirits./ Répertoire / 2 Violoncelles et Piano

Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. Throughout his life, Antonio Vivaldi wrote almost thirty instrumental works that use the cello as a solo instrument. Vivaldi knew how to tailor his music to the cello and in doing so, helped to establish this still young instrument in the music of that time. The Concerto RV 531 is the only double concerto in Vivaldi?s ?uvre for two solo violoncellos. The two solo parts take centre stage with virtuosic passages but lie on the instrument so well that they can be comfortably mastered by advanced students. The edition is based on the careful evaluation of Vivaldi?s autograph score which is the main source and several inconsistencies found in previous editions have been clarified. At the same time the edition allows for a flexible realisation of this concerto: it can be performed by a full tutti orchestra or by one performer per part.
