The Cherry Tree is a beautiful and lyrical folk song dating back as early as the 15th century in the English Midlands. Having traveled all around western Europe, this folk tune eventually found its way to America, gaining popularity in the South in early 1900s and again in the 1960s. This setting, by composer Brian Beck, captures the beauty and simplicity of the original ballad while encouraging musical expression and smooth phrasing. A century ago, James Causley Windram, then band director of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers (and later the Coldstream Guards) asked Gustav Holst if he would transcribe some of the composer's Hymns from the Rig Veda for military band. Always a band advocate, Holst readily agreed. In this thoroughly characteristic suite, two of Windram's settings (Hymn of the Travellers and Battle Hymn) have been edited for modern instrumentation, while a third (Hymn to Manas) has been arranged by Jon Ceander Mitchell from Holst's original choral setting.

Although Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) composed in every genre, he gained international fame and recognition principally with his chamber music for brass instruments and his works written for wind ensembles and wind orchestras. In 1995 he was invited to WASBE, the international organization of wind ensembles, and in the final decades of his life, which were rich in commissions, he travelled the world as a competition jury member, guest of honour at festivals and visiting university professor. Full of humour and extremely effective, Merry Music is one of his best-known and most popular works.

The piece traces key events in the life of Haakon the Good, later to become King Haakon I (ca. 921-960), who had been fostered by King Athelstan of England as part of a peace agreement made by his father (The Future King). The English king brought him up in the Christian religion and, on the news of his father's death, provided him with ships and men for an expedition against his half-brother Eirik Bloodaxe, who had been proclaimed king of Norway. On his arrival he travelled north (The Journey to Trondheim), where he began to gain the support of the landowners by promising to give up the rights of taxation his father had previously claimed. Elrik's sons allied themselves with the Danes, but were invariably defeated by Haakon, who was successful in everything he undertook except in his attempt to introduce Christianity to the country (The Missionary King), which aroused an opposition he did not feel strong enough to face. One of his most famous victories was The Battle of Rastarkalv (near Frei) in 955. By placing ten standards far apart along a low ridge (to give the impression his army was bigger than it actually was), he managed to fool Eirik's sons that they were outnumbered (the ten standards are represented by ten loud chords that begin in m. 420). The Danes fled and were slaughtered by Haakon's army.

With Wind and Water is a musical portrayal of an adventure on the high seas during the sailing age. It was during the 16th to the mid-19th century where large sailing vessels dominated global exploration, international trade, and naval warfare. The piece's compound meter provides the pulse of movement as it pitches and rolls with the rhythm of the waves. The driving main melodies convey the determination and courage of the explorers and their crew. Dissonant harmonies suggest rough seas, turbulent weather, and other constant dangers that sailors must endure. Finally, the ending sweeping melody and climax reflects the joy and triumph at arriving on a new land at the apex of a long and intense voyage. With evidence of watercraft dating back to 8000 BC, travel by water has remained an important aspect of life to many civilizations. From paddling down a river or crossing a large lake, to steaming across an entire ocean, generations of humans have traveled on water to explore foreign lands, to seek food and precious materials, to move and trade cargo, and to attack and fend off enemies. With Wind and Water is a musical portrayal of an adventure on the high seas during the age of sail. The inspiration for this piece came from an e-mail received by the composer from a friend who was travelling around Brazil. The music depicts the countries great contrasts, from the extreme poverty of the street children to the lavish lifestyle of the top footballers and the carnival revellers in Rio de Janeiro. Bring an exotic feel to any concert with the lively Latin American rhythms of E-mail from Brazil.

This pioneering spirit is clearly reflected in the rhythmically exciting opening of Gateway West. Shifting meters and interesting percussion fills are combined with bright, lighthearted woodwind melodies. The trip west was not an easy one and these early travelers endured great hardships and many unhappy days. The slow middle section of Gateway West, with its minor tonality and lyrical melodies, reflects that part of the long, perilous journey.

The North Star appears to the naked eye as a single bright star in a circle of apparent darkness. This has made it a beacon and a guide to explorers and travelers. North Star is a dramatic fanfare for band that celebrates the courageous exploration of the unknown in search of personal discovery and freedom. Composer Peter Terry continues to write interesting music for even the youngest of band musicians.

A cantastoria or Bänkelsänger German for busker was a travelling musician who made music in streets and squares, together with his colleagues. Die Bänkelsängerlieder (buskers songs) originally stem from the seventeenth century. Robert van Beringen, who is known for his attractive arrangements of classical melodies, created a colourful transcription for wind band based on this characteristic music.

In Atlas Rising, composer Carl Strommen derives inspiration from the statue of Titan Atlas lifting the universe on his shoulders. Unlike Sisyphus (of perpetual rolling stone fame) the monumental effort of Atlas was successful. This piece takes this idea and models it into an exceptional piece for contest/festival performance.Atlas Rising was commissioned by WorldStrides OnStage and is dedicated to the thousands of directors who have traveled to a WorldStrides event over the past thirty-five years . WorldStrides OnStage offers performance experiences that fuel the passion of performing artists of all ages with breathtaking productions, prestigious events and premier venues . They provide performance opportunities all over the world where debuts are made, mentors are met, co-stars become lifelong friends and inspirations build bright futures .Directly across the street from St . Patricks Cathedral on 5th avenue and in front of Rockefeller Center in NYC, is the Lee Lawrie sculpture of Atlas holding up the heavens . Titles are always a problem - so after listening to a few playbacks, this very imposing statue of the Titan Atlas lifting the Universe on his shoulders came to mind - starting slowly with the low brass, “Rising†moves steadily with determination and intensity to a powerful and “muscular†conclusion . Unlike Sisyphus (of perpetual rolling stone fame) the monumental effort of Atlas was successful . As with all performing pieces, attention to dynamics and articulation are critical - In “Atlas Rising†- the conductor has many opportunities to interpretive discretion, particularly in the opening slower sections and after measure 109 on to the conclusion .
