Ernst Toch fut l'un des plus importants compositeurs contemporains de la fin de la vingtaine et la trentaine. Il est actif à Berlin et après 1933, à Los Angeles. En plus d'être un compositeur, il était surtout un enseignant. Spiel Opus 39 pour Symphonie ensemble à vent était composée à l'instigation de Paul Hindemith et a reçu sa première représentation en 1926, réalisé par Hermann Scherchen au Festival de musique de chambre de Donaueschingen. Toch lui-même écrivit un autre mécanisme du travail pour la section de vent d'un orchestre symphonique.Cette édition a été adaptée pour les instruments habituellement trouvés dans une bande de vent aujourd'hui, en ce qui concerne de clari-filets et trompettes, sans modifier le fond musical du travail. Il n'y a aucun pari pour Saxophone äs dans l'original. Aujourd'hui Spiel est toujours considéré comme l'une des meilleures compositions de musique de concert. / Ensemble A Vent

Following studies at the University of Cambridge he studied music in Leipzig and Berlin before returning to England where he was one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music in London.
