Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) began his musical life as a piano prodigy in Barcelona...(+)
Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) began his musical life as a piano prodigy in Barcelona at the age of four and it is as a prolific composer of solo works for the pianoforte that we must celebrate him most. This Dover edition presents two of Albeniz' best known works in authoritative editions: the piano suite Iberia generally considered to be his masterpiece; and the album leaves Espana which contain the 'Tango' his most popular individual work. Iberia is a collection of twelve musical scenes of Spanish life principally Andalusian written between 1906 and 1909. Its brilliant and complex character is suffused with the rhythms and harmonies of Spanish popular music to which Albenizturned for inspiration in the last years of his life. Espana an earlier work first published in 1890 is made up of six piano pieces that subtly reflect the influences of the piano literature of the 19th century-salon and like Iberia the harmony and style of Impressionism which Albeniz undeniably helped to establish.

Publication of the fourth and last book in the ?Iberia? cycle in Henle Urtext coincides perfectly with the 150th anniversary Isaac Albeniz's birth.Albéniz had greatly struggled to complete the workbecause he was very ill. Yet he was able to hand over all of the twelve pieces he had promised to the pianist Joaquin with whom he was friends.Following the sensuous dance rhythms in ?Málaga? and the cheerful and lively?Eritaña? he succeeded in creating a striking musical portrait of the famous Spanish wine-growing region with ?Jerez?. ?Music has never achieved such a diverse and colourful form ? was the judgement passed on Albéniz? lateRomantic masterpiece by none other than Claude Debussy.

The Spanish composer and pianist Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909) was one of the leading members of the Nationalist school that dominated Spanish music at the turn of the last century. He left two pieces unfinished at the time of his death: Azulejos was completed by Enrique Granados while Navarra was finished by Albéniz?s pupil the French composer Déodat de Séverac (1872-1921) and published in 1912. It was originally intended to form part of the Iberia Suite but the composer gave up on it after declaring it to be 'shamelessly cheap'. Nevertheless this work for solo Piano remains a worthwhile addition to therepertoire.

When Isaac Alb?niz???s work Sevilla was performed in Madrid in 1886 it not only brought the composer public recognition but also a commission to compose an eight-movement Suite espagnole for Piano (HN783). Although it took him a further 15 years to complete the latter Sevilla was already published in a single edition in 1886. Most people are probably not familiar with the original version of thisspirited miniature about the Spanish city and its native flamenco. This is because Alb?niz captured the musical character so effectively that Guitar players immediately claimed the piece for themselves. ThisHenle Urtext edition gives pianists the chance to reclaim flamenco for the Piano.

Pavana Capricho is one of the last pieces from Isaac Albeniz’s early period before he turned to Spanish influences a style that would characterise the rest of his compositions. In this earlier period Albeniz who was a child prodigy on the Piano composed ‘salon style’ music and experimented with traditional styles in the manner of Rameau Bach Beethoven Chopin and Liszt. His shift towards Spanish music occurred after meeting the teacher and composer Felipe Pedrell a leading figure in the development of nationalist Spanish music.Pavana-Capricho is graceful and light-hearted at the same time. Theplayfulness that arises from the alternating moods is best achieved when the proper technique and articulation is applied. Arranged for the solo Piano and with a performance time of ca. 3:30 this piece of Romantic solo music is a perfect addition to any concert programme.

The only surviving original recording of Albéniz' Piano playing is from 1903. On a visit to Ruperto Regordosa Planas he had sat down at the former's Piano and improvised three short pieces. Planas recorded the music on aphonograph cylinder. The pieces were however never written down on paper. With the help of modern technical resources Milton Laufer an expert on Albéniz has been able to carefully reconstruct the musical text. This firstprinting of the transcription thus enables us to have a unique 'peep through the keyhole' into the workshop of the gifted pianist and composer. As a little extra we have included this fascinating recording on a CD with the firstissue of this printing.

This suite for Piano solo was written in 1886 and was Albneniz's first attempt at suite composition and arrangement. It consists of eight folk-like melodies and nationalistic dance movements which refer to Spanish towns and landscapes. Suite Espagnole Op.47 reflects the composer's characteristically recognisable preference for large sonorous chords for guitar-like tremolo sounds and for rhythmic and harmonic effects taken from folk-music.
