Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. Les douze «Symphonies londoniennes» forment le sublime accord final de l’œuvre symphonique de Haydn. Elles ont été conçues pour l’imprésario londonien Johann Peter Salomon, et Haydn lui-même en dirigea les créations, lorsqu’il se rendit, en 1791/1792 et 1794/1795, pour quelque temps dans la métropole anglaise. La Symphonie en Sol majeur exécutée pour la première fois en mars 1792 fait aujourd’hui toujours partie des œuvres les plus populaires de Haydn. Son surnom anglais de «Surprise» lui vient de l’étonnant accord de tutti de l’Andante, auquel le public ne s’attendait certes pas. Haydn avait introduit cet effet consciemment après coup - et se tenait d’ailleurs volontiers prêt à autoriser le surnom donné, après l’effet de surprise, par un musicien londonien. Cette œuvre populaire se répandit rapidement également dans les pays germanophones, où elle occupe une place solide dans le répertoire - sous le nom de «Symphonie au coup de timbale» (Paukenschlag). Ravel’s brilliant compositional interpretation of the Pictures at an Exhibition is, to this day, the most famous and independent orchestration of Mussorgsky’s masterpiece. When the French composer turned his attention to his Russian colleague’s piano cycle in 1922, he was at the height of his mastery and Paris was enraptured by Russian music. Notated with remarkable accuracy in an autograph score, Ravel’s orchestration was an audience favorite from the very start. Jean-François Monnard, who previously edited the Breitkopf Urtext editions of Boléro , La Valse and Rapsodie espagnole , presents a text in which even the tiniest detail is authentic. The edition not only eliminates many previously undiscovered errors, but also offers a wealth of practical information on the long and multi-faceted performance history of the work, including the metronome markings of great conductors who were connected to the work in a very special manner.
