Quinze études was adapted by Ulysse Delécluse (1907-1995) from the set of six works Sonatas and Partitas for Violin initially written by J. S. Bach (1685-1750) in 1720. Started in 1703 and only finished in 1720 it alternates between three sonatas in four movements and three partitas. In this baroque composition each sonata has a four-movement structure consisting of a prelude a fugue and a more binary tempo for the third and fourth parts. The partitas with a structure close to the gigue were slightly more varied due to the introduction of different elements. This transcription for the clarinet produced in1953 by Ulysse Delécluse a French clarinettist and professor enables an easier access to this repertoire for clarinettists.

I would have given anything to be able to play them, and this was what inspired me to study the bass clarinet. The series of diverse emotions which I subsequently experienced made me see Music in a completely new way. I began learning them slowly, inevitably adapting the text. As I discovered their educational value, the knowledge of harmonic structures, forms and stylistic features gradually evolved within me. Over 20 years I have studied various editions and listened to the meaning which these suites have had for many famous performers. Ipleasantly discovered the commendable work of other clarinettists who in turn have dedicated themselves to approaching this composer with the bass clarinet. The objective of this version isn't to impose conditions on how to play the suites. We carried out unique research into the coherence of the text, based on the manuscripts of Anna Magdalena Bach and Johann Peter Kellner. The choice to remove any type of articulation and agogic was made in order to encourage the development of personal interpretation, which obviously requires a fundamental investigation of the sources. This edition comes with 4 versions of the suite. The reason behind producing four versions (which are in different keys and tones) is because every musician has their own tastes and tendencies. Personally, I prefer the bass clef transposed to B flat because I find the bass clef to be the most appropriate for the spirit of the low instrument. Cette transcription a été faite d’après le manuscrit original, ma source étant la version copiée par Anna Magdalena Bach. Les nuances et articulations proposées sont fidèles au manuscrit, autant que possible. Je n’en ai ajouté aucune, afin de donner toute la liberté nécessaire à l’interprétation de cette musique si riche. Les articulations du manuscrit guident les violonistes dans le choix des coups d’archet, à vous de vous en inspirer ou de les modifier à votre guise. Les double-cordes, de même que les accords (joués ‘en arpèges’ par les violonistes), sont reproduites avec des notes en appoggiature ou en arpèges. Je suis conscient que, pour la plupart des clarinettistes, le fait de jouer sur une partition exempte d’indication de tempi, nuances, articulations, respirations, est quelque peu déroutant. C’est justement, selon moi, toute la richesse de cette version proche de l’original. Vous pourrez explorer cette œuvre fabuleuse, affiner votre technique de jeu (certains passages sont particulièrement difficiles) et développer votre propre interprétation.
