St. Michael-The French composer Louis Bourgeois lived from c.1510 to 1560. Bourgeois was cantor in Geneva and commissioned by John Calvin he composed melodies for metrical (rhyming) versions of the psalms. After completing about a hundred one-part psalms he made some four-part arrangements which were denounced and even resulted in his imprisonment for a day. Later Bourgeois published a number of psalm collections and judging from his book Le droict chemin de musique he was also an excellent educator. The melodies Bourgeois composed are (contrary to Gregorian chants) particularly suitable for community singing. This applies to his hymn tune Saint Michael which is why this melody hasbeen used for various texts written for many occasions. John Blanken made this arrangement for a wedding ceremony: an occasion in which faith and trust play a large - if not the largest - role. Hence the title Hymn of Faith. The arrangement contains four verses of the hymn. After a majestic opening the hymn follows twice the second verse being embellished in the tenor register. After a short interlude verse three follows played by a quartet. The majestic opening is then repeated as a modulation into the fourth verse which concludes the work in a brilliant tutti.

This stirring arrangement of O Come All Ye Faithful was created to accompany Choral performance or congregational singing for Christmas services. Scored for three Trumpets three Trombones Tuba and Timpani the arrangement includes a fanfare first verse and accompaniment for verses two three four and in the David Willcocks setting.David Hill is an Organist arranger and conductor with particular success in his Choral work. He has made numerous recordings with the choir of Westminster Cathedral where he was master of music. He has also been Organist and master of music at Winchester Cathedral and music director at St John’s College Cambridge.

Equally the attacks in Paris and Nice led to great public indignation fear and disbelief.What has happened to the western world? Have our cultures grown apart to such an extent that we do not understand each other anymore? Bert Appermont’s intention was to voice certain emotions that these acts of terror have caused: particularly fear grief anger and helplessness. He uses the French children’s song Au Claire de la Lune as a connecting thread throughout the work.This piece is also about hope and faith in another world andis meant to pay homage to all victims resulting in a dignified remembrance. The musical development is presented in four through-composed parts titled Innocence  In Cold Blood  In Memoriam – We Shall Rise Again and A New Day.This work was commissioned by the Brassband Oberösterreich (Brass Band Upper Austria) to be played at the European Brass Band Championships 2017.

Elegy for Band-The initial idea was for a millennium piece which it is but rather than add to the many celebratory pieces that have understandably been written to salute the 3rd millennium Philip Sparke thought it would perhaps be appropriate to think about the aspects of life that are constantly with us (such as faith and philosophy) rather than the exciting changes that the year 2000 has undeniably wrought. This calm meditative work will bring a moment of serenity and reflection to any concert.

Merrily on high; Angels from the realms of glory; O come all ye faithful; Silent Night; I saw three ships; Here we come a-wassailing; The Sussex Carol; God rest you merry gentlemen; Quelle est cette odeur agréable?; Jingle Bells; Away in a manger and We wish you a merry Christmas.The piece is scored for a standard brass quintet. It lasts 7' 30' but an optional cut can be made if performed as an encore reducing the length to 4' 35'.

In 2006 a long-time dream of Philip Sparke finally became reality: to compose a set of variations on the famous chorale from Saint-Saëns’ renowned Organ Symphony. In 2009 the composer reworked the piece for brass band. The resulting Saint-Saëns Variations has been simplified shortened and in many places completely recomposed to distill the essence of the symphony even further and allow younger bands to enjoy the power of Saint-Saëns’ masterpiece in an approachable yet completely faithful work.

Sleigh Ride-Troika is a Russian word that means a group of three but it also means a light Russian sleigh pulled by three horses. Christmas Troika portrays the joy of Christmas via a musical sleigh-ride. Listen as the glistening snow crinkles beneath the weight of the sleigh and the hooves of the prancing horses as it travels through the countryside. One can almost see the frost on the trees and hear the wind blow and the sleigh-bells ring as the tune O Come All Ye Faithful winds its way through the music.
